  1. LM, you know I read many times the original and this explanation but to me logically speaking, it makes little sense. I don't know, it makes sense that the Lord will instruct it to be used in times of winter, famine, etc because it keeps you all warm but it makes little sense to me why he will say it is pleased unto him that they should not be used only during these times, I find it completely weird.

  3. I think you will find this little piece of history interesting: LDS Church News - New thresholds of opportunity in 1950s
  4. No honeymoon exception but like Eowyn said, some people make those exceptions for themselves every time they are on vacation or the weather is too hot.
  5. Hey Beefche, happy birthday! Sorry to hear you was sick!
  6. Classylady, I am very sorry to hear you didn't have a good day today. I will PM you. Lots of love.
  7. Since I am not an English professor, I contacted someone who I consider a friend of mine (she also has done extensive research on this topic). She teaches Literature and Creative writing at BYU, and agreed with my interpretation and use of the word "disavow" within the context of the Church statement. I know it's just her opinion, I am merely posting this to state that I sought for the advice of a professional.
  8. What would be the sense of repudiating a teaching that is true? Sorry, but it makes little sense to me. Repudiating means "To reject the validity or authority of". The Church is stating that those theories are not valid. If there was any truth in them, it is clear they wouldn't be repudiating them. I agree with that and it is clear with Plural Marriage yet, the Church never repudiated the doctrine, even in the last Church statement they stated that it was a revelation given to Joseph Smith. Here, we are witnessing a repudiation of theories advanced by early leaders and also a clear absence of a similar phraseology. No mention of a revelation imposing the restriction.
  9. Oh my goodness, I can't be reading this on Christmas Eve while baking a ham.
  10. Vort, I happen to agree with you about Elder Holland's opinion on the topic. The same applies with every LDS leader talking about it non-officially. I was merely trying to help JAG with the quote.
  11. Hi mordorbund. :) It seems to me you are making the word "disavow" a synonym of the word "discontinue" and I personally believe both are different. I think the word "repudiate" is actually a good synonym of "disavow". What definition are you using for the word? I quickly searched online dictionaries and these are the definitions I found:
  12. While baking my ham... I think this is what you referring to from the PBS interview: The Mormons . Interviews . Jeffrey Holland | PBS
  13. JAG, when the Church said: Another very similar statement: Not trying to be technical, but if indeed the ban was instituted by God, why the use of the "why" in the sentence? Okay, we can argue and say it meant that we do not know "why' the Lord instituted the restriction but I find it difficult to understand that if the point is so clear why they did not use something like: "At some point, the Lord commanded his Prophet to stop ordaining male members of African descent" They clearly did it in the latest Polygamy statement when they stated that it was a Revelation given to Joseph Smith. The lack of a similar choice of words in this particular issue and in the latest statements is something to wonder about. On top of it all, "We condemn racism, including any and all past racism by individuals both inside and outside the Church." is also another interesting point of discussion.
  14. This is what the Church stated: Church Statement Regarding 'Washington Post' Article on Race and the Church
  15. I would be the first to use this quote, as a matter of fact I used this quote a lot when writing or debating about Blacks and the Priesthood restriction however, I like to be fair. Kimball was an Apostle at the time of the quotation and it wasn't any sort of official statement, so will it fall also into the category of "It's "a single statement made by a single leader on a single occasion [that] often represents a personal, though well-considered, opinion, but is not meant to be officially binding for the whole Church"? Yes I believe so, ambiguous statement? Absolutely, official? No. I say ambiguous because even though he clearly opens the possibility of an "error" and believes the Lord would "forgive" the possible mistake that caused the deprivation, he also clearly stated "I know the Lord could change his policy and release the ban... clearly indicating he believed the ban was a policy instituted by the Lord.
  16. My cookie dough is always warm, I wonder if is something related to the butter perhaps not being soft enough? Can this affect the cookie and make it too cake-like? Too much flour?
  17. I would love that! Love fruits. :) A lot of people have allergies, they are lactose intolerance, etc.
  18. My cookies always turn out with a cake-like texture. I want a recipe for super flat and crisp sugar cookies!!! Anyone??
  19. JAG, I suppose it has a lot to do with how close the relationship is and if they extended an invitation to me ( I am just giving an example, I personally wouldn't have a problem in wishing them the best and inviting them over to my home, etc). If there is not such a relationship to start with and the person isn't my friend or relative or the person isn't inviting me to the wedding, why should I approach them and tell them what they are doing is wrong? I find it odd.
  20. Is that a crown? They looked like praying sausages to me.
  21. Well, let me die too! Share that recipe please!
  22. I don't know Carlimac, I would hope that if anyone has a problem in congratulating others for choices they don't share, they will just keep quiet.
  23. My goodness, while you prepare the mashed potatoes your wife is alerting the paramedics?
