Clearing up misconceptions: Jesus' brother
Blackmarch replied to Byron's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
when a non lds christian hears only a snippet of something unique to the LDS they have tendency to use their own conceptions and understanding to fill in the blanks... things can get conflicting to say the least. -

Clearing up misconceptions: The Leaves of Grass
Blackmarch replied to Byron's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I have yet to hear this one.... however considering ALL the other books that i've seen that were claimed to have been plagiarized by JS have been inaccurate as far as I have been able to see and read, i'll go out on a limb and say that this one is false too. -
Clearing up misconceptions: Immaculate conception

this is false. this is an extreme mis-interpretation of an old quote from some LDS leader. The only thing that LDS have on the subject is that the power of the Holy Ghost was used. -
Clearing up misconceptions: Jesus' brother

the truth is that LDS believe that everyone, including christ and satan were part of a family before the earth was made- and at some point satan rebelled and took all he could with him. pretty much at this point he did everything he could to separate himself from anything remotely related to god and christ. so the quote is somewhat true.... but because it's not given in any context it tends to taken wrong. -
there are some things that are specifically stated and some things are not, coffee and tea have been specifically stated and some think that it is because of the caffeine. caffeine itself has not been explicitly stated and tends to fall inside a grey area for some..... however in general we are told to not use drugs for reasons other than health reasons

Clearing up misconceptions: Undergarments
Blackmarch replied to Byron's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
the garments are no more magical than the bible is. it's not the garments themselves that afford protection but rather it's the intervention of God for those who abide their covenants. The garments are both symbolic of as well as a reminder of the covenants. -
Clearing up misconceptions: Where does God live?
Blackmarch replied to Byron's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
somewhere that isn't earth. the scriptures don't mention a planet. that could be a possible interpretation of world or realm or something like that. the closest in theLDS scriptures is a mention of a planet called Kolob that is said to be near to God..... but it doesn't elucidate whether it is physical proximity or as to righteousness (or both). however there are definitely mormons who think that God lives on his own planet, depending on how you read the scriptures that can be a logical conclusion one draws from them -
The night Elder Dallin H. Oaks was held at gunpoint
Blackmarch replied to pam's topic in General Discussion
I wouldn't know anything about a person not being able to be called to the twelve just for defending themselves... if that in itself is a requirement then I'd find that odd too (and don't know of that requirement). I can see such being a hurdle but not an impossible one. -

I don't- many of these older prophets had training to deal with blood. Blood is not a light burden. However i'd also note that with many of those same prophets they were inspired to withhold executing justice at times and at others taking up the sword. (i'd further note that blood on Moses' hands kept him from entering the promised land, if I recall right) As that was inspiration to him (elder oaks) from the spirit I'm in agreement with vort, it would have been significant in some way that was detrimental to his becoming an apostle. exactly in what way would it have been I don't know. altho if i had to make a guess it would likely stem from some psychological issue... but the public idea isn't a bad guess either; how would people react to an apostle who killed a black kid? (nevermind that he was threatened with a weapon by the guy, the media tends to leave out things like that) - and that sort of thing becomes ammo for people who try to institute laws that can be used against the church. -
Welcome back ... can't say i'm surprised tho. And i fieel similarly that it will only be a matter of time before the church will seperate itself from BSA.

How do I ratify Mormonism with 1corinthians 6-9?
Blackmarch replied to Byron's topic in General Discussion
The question is, whose gospel? -
it used to be that it was a clear cut line between pg 13 and R... now there isn't. pretty much we've been told that we have to be really careful in what we choose to consume in the media. avoid things that display or promote things that are immoral.

also just for kicks sake... "It aint over, till it's over, and as long as someone is trying to change something, it aint over"

or the 1005 slaughtered because they choose the way of Christ. why would these "unreinforce it"? I was not saying that guns are good or bad or should or should not be used. If you so desire, you may want to read the account of first nephi where Nephi is instructed to take up a weapon and take someone else's life. I said they were not important. If it is necesary for them to be used, the right leaders and/or people in the right places will have the revelation for such as well as the vice versa. What is important is 1. being obedient, and 2 being in tune with the spirit. you ask "perhaps they were not faithful enough?" that's always a possibility (most of the people that you stated here don't have the covenants, if you want to explore that route- that may or may not have an influence, but in the end they don't have all the promises from such-if said covenants have any pertinance to any sort of promise of physical protection in mortality); which seem to be the case of the saints referred to in section 98, but on the other hand you have the families (the wives and children) of the converts in who were allowed to be burned (very much allowed -Alma's companion was very strongly asking why they wouldn't stretch out their hands and invoke the priesthood to prevent it with their frickin hands they didn't even worry about having any tools than other than the priesthood... (no mention of using a sword or bows and oarrows or even going and getting an army organized for relief effort )and was told that it was so that God may judge the wicked in full. how often are we faithful enough? How much faith would it take fo you to put down your weapon instead of pulling the trigger when seeing a barrel pointed or being pointed back at you? how much faith would it take to trust god to intervene in some manner or another? They couldn't touch Christ till he let them. But I don't expect people to have that much faith.

This crossed my FB today, and i thought I'd share- it doesn't really underscore any point beyond God protects his servants, but personally i find it reinforcing to my belief that guns don't really matter (or shouldn't to the faithful). anyways here's the link http://www.aggielandmormons.org/2015/10/in-very-moment-harrowing-night-elder.html

well getting there. it's not so bad that cash is more efficiently used as fire starters than actual money....... yet.

I had to tough out hotter and humid climates- ended up showering and doing laundry more. have you tried talking to the relief society president? If she directs you to the bishop, you can ask her to be a go between, and write up a letter stating your problems (try to be more on the specific side rather than vague). I think there are different materials and styles used now, and i'd be surprised if there wasn't some resource available that could provide custom fits. (I would not know off the top of my head where to find it, but that's why i'd start with the relief society pres were I female, or the bishop for the vice versa)

put Christ first, always, and trust him- do your mission, stay worthy of the priesthood, etc... If you are prompted to share the gospel then do so. If your dream is what is ahead of you then it will only come to pass if you are being righteous, once you get back get serious with God about it- prayer, fasting, etc... if not it will pass as a stupor of thought.
