  1. President McKay sounded like a compassionate man, one who liked to give people the benefit of the doubt. Even though he was very unhappy with McConkie for writing "Mormon Doctrine", he did not want to ruin his reputation. I wonder how I was able to see pages of the book last night that are not available to me at home? Weird. I enjoyed reading what I was able to read last night, maybe I will have to put it on my Christmas list.
  2. I don't know that I would say everything the Prophet says is scripture. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young said some pretty off-the-wall things. I think you have to know when the Prophet is speaking from his own mind and when he's speaking from the Lord.
  3. Thanks for this link. I started reading this book last night at work, but now that I'm home not all of the pages are showing up. It says it's just a preview, is there anywhere to see the whole book on Google?
  4. Thanks for the replies. I downloaded a sample of the book on Kindle. They describe the sources they used to compile the book and the very last sentence says it is not authorized by the Church or Brigham Young University. The authors are Rober Millett, Camille Fronk Olson, Andrew Skinner, and Brent L Top.
  5. Does anyone have this book? Does this book only include official doctrinal beliefs, or is it similar to "Mormon Doctrine"?
  6. Favorite of the LDS doctrine, probably Temple work and our belief that you are not out of luck if didn't accept the Gospel in your life on Earth. Least favorite LDS doctrine, something we no longer practice, but I'd have to say polygamy. I'm not sure if that's doctrine or not. Least favorite of traditional Christianity, the belief that there can be no other witnesses to Christ other than the Bible and that there are no living Prophets on the Earth today. Favorite of traditional Christianity, doing service unto others. Not that the LDS church doesn't do that, but it's something we have in common. To the OP, I think a lot of members ignore the "hot drinks" portion of the WoW or they interpret it to mean alcoholic drinks. I know many members who drink herbal teas and hot chocolate. I haven't heard of anyone not being allowed into the Temple because they admit to drinking hot chocolate or herbal teas. Coffee is off limits.
  7. It's Publix that has the rack of UK specific candies. I was tempted to buy some the other day but I'm supposed to be on a low-fat diet...booo.
  8. Isn't non-alcoholic wine called grape juice? hehe I bought a bottle of Meier's Sparkling Grape Juice and it was really good.
  9. I think everyone in the chain of command should be fired. I don't see how any human being can see something like that and not try to stop it. I don't think I would care if I got fired.
  10. Jesus Christ had a physical body on earth and lived with us, but he was never a sinner. So I would think if God the Father also obtained a physical body at one point then he would not have been a sinner, he would have been perfect like Christ.
  11. My philosophy is, if it doesn't pertain to my salvation I don't pay much attention to it. It's an interesting discussion, but all we are doing is speculating on what might be. While we are still on this earth, I don't think we will ever understand how God the Father came to be.
  12. Your user name suits you. I didn't make the sauce for anyone but myself. I found a recipe that I wanted to try and I tried it without the wine. I don't think the absence of the wine took away from the sauce.
  13. I wouldn't think you could work at an abortion clinic and get a Temple recommend.
  14. I bought some sparkling grape juice, it's in a wine bottle, haha. The mushroom sauce calls for 2 cups of beef broth, so I don't think substituting with broth is going to work. I've had a few sips of wine before and it tastes awful to me, I don't see how people drink the stuff. I have some white cooking wine, but it has a ton of sodium in it. I think it does still have a small amount of alcohol in it.
  15. I think I might try the grape juice and a little vinegar.
  16. It's not that I mind cooking with wine, it's that I have no clue what kind of wine to buy. I also don't want to buy a bottle and then waste most of it, because there aren't a lot of recipes I have that call for wine. I agree with gopecon, I'd rather not be seen buying it.
  17. I'm making a mushroom sauce that calls for a 1/3 cup red wine. What can I use to substitute it? I've heard grape juice can be used?
  18. I just went back and read some previous posts about including women in the pornography discussion. I agree, the church needs to address this issue to both men and women. I was in a book store the other day and there was a whole aisle and a half filled with nothing but "romance" novels. While I've never read a romance novel, it's my understanding that it's basically porn, it's just not in picture or video form. Why else would you have a shirtless guy on the cover? Women like to fantasize, while men are more visual.
  19. I just finished reading a book by Donald L Hilton Jr, "He Restoreth My Soul" that explains the addiction of pornography and the fact that it acts just like a drug addiction. You can't just tell someone to try not to look at pornography, they need professional counseling. This book was very insightful for me and I think every Bishop and church member should read it. I just now found two websites that might be helpful for any one struggling with this, Pornography Addiction | Sexual Addiction | LDS Addiction Recovery Programs and Porn Addiction | Don Hilton He Restoreth My Soul | Pornography Addiction I'm on the road to recovery, I still have a ways since I still haven't got the nerve up to talk to my Bishop about it. It's getting better for me though, and I just take one day at a time and I'm thankful for every day that I don't have those awful thoughts.
  20. I think these protests are silly. Who do they think are responsible for providing jobs for Americans? It's not the Government, the Government can't create jobs, it's private businesses, big or small that create jobs. Ok so there are some companies out there who they think are greedy, do they really think that by protesting the company is going to say, "ok, we won't be greedy anymore, we will cap our profits to make it fair for everyone". No company should have to cap it's profits, a successful business is successful because we made it successful. I don't think half the protestors even know what they are protesting for. I just hope it doesn't turn violent (I've heard some reports it already has) because it will be just like what they had to deal with in Europe.
  21. lol, Flavius. We are advised against reading "Anti" literature, but no one is standing over us while we surf the internet or buy our books to make sure we don't read it. I've seen some of the anti websites and their claims are pretty ridiculous. I choose to read things that uplift me, not stuff that pisses me off.
  22. These are all very good responses. I was just wondering if I needed to start wearing make up or something to get guys to notice me more. I'm not overweight, so that's not a problem for me, yet. I just feel like I'm too plain or something. I really don't style my hair besides washing and brushing it. I've also wondered if I'm not girly enough for guys.
  23. This is true, there are many gruesome ways we die, so I'm sure the ashes could be put back together.
  24. When my brother was killed my parents argued about this. My dad and his parents believed cremation was better somehow, I guess why spend the money on the casket and burial when you have no more use for your body, they are not members. My mother was against cremation. I resolved the issue by telling my dad my brother said he would feel weird having his body burned, which he did say. A couple of years ago my brother's friend killed himself. Since his mother didn't know the condition of his body (he shot himself), she had him cremated. I guess she could have just had a closed casket funeral, but she choose cremation. They also didn't have a lot of money for his burial. I've never really heard one way or another the church's stance on the subject. I personally would feel weird about having my body burned to ashes, but that's just me.
  25. haha. I can understand not liking the weight gain and sloppy clothes. I've never been much of a make-up kind of a girl. Does make-up really make someone more attractive? It's not something you can wear 24/7, so I figure a guy better be attracted to his wife even if she doesn't wear make-up.
