  1. The articles that come up in Google Search for Tea Party nutty ideas are all biased.  I gave you an example above.

If you would rather think that the US is more a threat to peace than ISIS... it's going to be a really difficult thing to take anything you say seriously.

They're bias because they don't paint the tea party in a good light maybe?

Its not me who said it but a poll by gallup.

  2. You're missing the point, LDG. You offer as evidence of the Tea Party's "nuttiness" the results of a biased Google search. I strongly suspect that if you were to outline the general beliefs and raison d'être of the Tea Party, right this very minute, without any further consultation of sources, you would fail miserably to get it right. I bet that, like most of Europe and of the American political Left, you don't understand what you are criticizing, and are instead basing your beliefs off of the slanted reporting in the news media.

So now google is bias?  Really?  And frankly I don't care what their policies are as long as they don't affect me or my loved ones. After two illegal wars, the illegal bombing of sovereign national states, is it any wonder that the USA are quoted as the number one threat to world peace.

  3. Google mormon and nutty ideas, or brits and nutty ideas, or white folks and nutty ideas, or europeans and nutty ideas, and I bet you'll get a lot of weird results, too. When you intentionally bias your search, don't be surprised when you find what you're looking for. But that doesn't make you right in your assessment.

But then those nutty brits, white folk, europeans etc aren't trying to become the government of one of the most powerful nations in the world, so at the end of the day, their nutty ideas don't count for much.

  4.  As a nutjob Tea Partier guy, when we save the country I'll be accepting your apology.  :D

And for the record, my brother is a big Bernie Sanders fan!

The only thing that can save the country is the gospel of Jesus Christ, and as for Bernie Sanders, I've no idea who he is!

  5. Look down the road from where we are.

If a "nutjob" is one who wants constitutionally limited government, then it would stand to reason that you want more centralized power in government without constitutional restraints.  This by definition would by an autocracy.  Nazism is what you eventually get.

If you don't want Nazism, then you would ask for constitutional restraints on government.  But instead you call those who support that idea "nutjobs".

Do you even know what the Tea Party stands for or has done?

Not at all, I think on the whole, the UK is doing quite well the way it is.  No I call people nutjobs because they come out with nutty things, just google tea party and nutty ideas and you will see what I mean!

  6. Thanks...

If wanting lower taxes and Constitutionally limited government are your criteria for labeling someone a "nutjob", I see why you would support socialism.  I wonder why you would be against nazism.

Why would I be against nazism/fascism?  Because they are inherently evil right wing ideologies, that caused the deaths of untold millions of people including many of my family.

  7. Scary ! I find the holiday of Halloween to be intereting, this isn't my culture since I'm not American. But I have always thought that this holiday was against christian beliefs. I don't know the stand of the church of LDS on Halloween, but it seems like it doesn't bother.

Scary crazy halloween to you all !

This gives a good representation of a traditional Christian responce to Halloween.  It seems to have caught on in a big way in the UK I personally don't allow my kids to participate because of the occult links.

  8. That is an unkind and uncharitable (and false) assessment of things. I understand that this is the view that is fed to you from pretty much all European media, so I can't really blame you for having the general idea that Republicans are a bunch of fascists -- though I would hope that exposure to American friends here and elsewhere might blunt that perception a bit. But it seems beyond the pale to throw such accusations around in this environment.

I was in Europe while Reagan was the President, and the Italians hated him and acted shocked if they ever found out I supported him. (Which only happened maybe twice, when I was directly asked; otherwise, I kept my politics strictly to myself.) Now, Europe is engaged in an ongoing love-fest with possibly the most corrupt and inept, and certainly the most divisive, President of my lifetime. So the opinions of European media are highly suspect, and you might do well not to accept the consensus views that you find in your news outlets.

Not all republicans, just the nutjobs like those in the tea party. As for the European media, its quite the opposite, they are often very pro-republican, especially now with the swing to the right that europe is taking politically.  Neo-fascism is once again on the rise in Europe which is a sorry state of affairs after such a short period of history since fascism was defeated in WW2.

  9. A web site does not a truth make.  The claim, even by the site is that Hitler used socialist organizations and reshaped their basic functions.  The plain fact is that the programs Hitler designed for citizens were entirely socialistic.  The problem was not in the Nazi definition of socialism but their definition of a citizen.  What the web site also fails is to recognize that under the rule of Hitler the German economy was based on state control, under the guise of a socialistic workers party - not private ownership.

I can accept the fact that no government is truly socialistic, capitalistic or even democratic.  There are always elements that pollute the purity of whatever label a government gives itself.  But one thing for sure - Hitler sold his programs to the German populous as socialism and the people at the time that embraced Hitler thought they were getting socialism.

The great lie of the left is that socialism protects the individual and their rights.  When the central state has the power they never distribute it - they keep it.  The basic difference between the right and left is the left wants to centralize power and sacrifice individual rights for efficiency and the right want to distribute the power whenever possible to provenances, cites, communities and individuals sacrificing efficiency for individual rights.   All other claims and efforts are intended misdirection and lies intended gain wealth, power and influence of some over others.

I never said it did make it true, though it does seem to be a view held only in the US by those of the right that Hitler was a socialist.  A quick google search shows how preposterous such a statement is, and flies in the face of over 70 years of history and quite frankly belittles the memory of those who fought against such tyranny that it is being labelled and portrayed as something it wasn't to ease the conscience of the neo fascists of the republican party.

  10. We all have opinions - as does Michael Savage.  We currently think Hitler is evil because the lost a war.  But we may forget that he was a socialist.   He was not extreme right - and it was only when he was opposed that he became vicious.  His first step was to use government agencies to harass his opposition.  He then took steps to blame others for his mistakes and justify harsh measures (such as violations of rights under the law).  At first his harshness did not seem to be that harsh.  But he began to concentrate his power - then anyone that did not fully support him became his opposition.  Most citizens of Germany did not know of the execution holocaust that he had planned - until after the war.  And to this day there are elements that do not believe it.

Our leaders certainly do not blame their opposition for their mistakes???  Why if for example if a the Secretary of State made a mistake that resulted in the death of an ambassador - They would resign.  If an appointed official - say over the Internal Revenue Service was found to discriminate against a citizen for political opinions - they would be removed from office and prosecuted.  Unlike Hitler - our leaders uphold the law and always put the right of any citizen before political ambition or party.   We have nothing to worry about - yet?

    Hitler was not a socialist.

  11. Answer the following questions to determine if you are a closet communist.

    1. Do you believe the government should put people and the environment before profits by companies?

    YES

    2. Do you believe the government should legislate equality and social justice?

    YES

    3. Do you believe the government should radically reform for profit companies to make them more worker friendly?

    PROBABLY

    4. Do you believe the government should allow a person to stay on unemployment until he finds a job?

    YES

    5. Do you believe the government should start public works programs to rebuild infrastructure, provide affordable housing, and clean up the environment?

    YES

    6. Do you believe that you are free under democracy?

    YES

    7. Do you believe the government should expand the food stamp program?

Don't know what food stamps are so will pass on this one.

    8. Do you believe the government should institute and control all health care insurance?

I believe that healthcare should be free at point of contact, which is what we have in the UK

    9. Do you believe the government should have the Social Security program?

    YES

    10. Do you believe the government should give out cash welfare payments (AFDC)?

    YES

    11. Do you believe the government should outlaw prayer in school?

    NO

    12. Do you believe the government should treat behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists/psychologists can understand or treat?

YES and NO, depending on what the particular problem is.

    13. Do you believe the government should mandate a high minimum wage?

    YES

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you've got a problem.  I went to various communist web sites and socialist organizations and made up these questions based on the content of those sites.  Every one of these questions is about force, the same as Satan's plan.  He wanted to require everyone to do the right things without giving anyone free agency to choose for themselves.

Or you live in the UK where the majority of these things already happen and we certainly aren't a communist country!

  12. I've returned to the church after a long absence.  I drifted way from the church because worldly distractions got in the way and it was easier to stay away once I stopped attending, I used to hide when ever I saw members that I knew!  I began to think about returning to the church in 2006 after a motorcycle accident, I saw an advert for the church on the TV and called up, the missionaries came round and over a period of time I began to attend church again.  It has been a struggle as in the intervening years I married and had kids, my wife is not supportive of my involvement with the church and was very anti-LDS to begin with.  Now its easier but she still isn't happy about my membership.  We are working through it.

I guess that I've always know the church is true, and have always had a testimony of the church from when I first investigated all those years ago. I've attended another church whilst away, I met my wife when I was attending a Baptist church, I also went to Bible college as I felt drawn to ordained ministry.  I enjoyed the whole experience but there was always a nagging doubt in the back of my mind that something wasn't right.  In the 3rd year of bible college during a class on other faiths a couple of LDS missionaries were invited in to share with the class, the class didn't show much Christian charity to them and I knew then that maybe this was the wrong road for me.  I did go and work in a local Baptist church for a while but found that many of the so called Christians were not very Christian in their attitudes or behaviour so I resigned and turned my back on the Baptist church.  I guess that was when I began my road back to the church, but even then it was a few years before I actively did anything about it.

Funny thing was I've only ever seen an advert on TV for the Church that one time, never seen one since!  I guess Heavenly Father works in mysterious ways and that short TV spot was enough to motivate me to get in touch with the missionaries and eventually return to church.

  13. There are three manifestations in which a person can speak in tongues:

    1) The gift of tongues with regard to speaking a known language (Mission examples and Joseph Smith when the interpreter wasn't speaking his exact words to the Indians).

    2) The gift of tongues with an unknown language, at least to us, nonetheless, it is still language.  This is where an interpreter is necessary because if not it doesn't edify or uplift the Saints. The interpretation comes by the power of the Holy Spirit. To speak in an unknown language, what one might call gibberish, isn't the gift of tongues.

    3) To speak by the power of the Holy Ghost is also speaking by the gift of tongues, or by the tongue of angels.

Number 1 and 3 should be the most sought after manifestations of the gift of tongues.

I agree totally.  Point 2 is interesting as when I was at bible college it certainly sounded like gibberish to me!  Though there was often interpretation as well. I believed that this was tongues because that was what I was told it was.  I even had experience of it myself.  Now many years down the line I'm not so sure it was.  Is what is called today speaking in tongues the same as what is recorded in the bible?  I'm not sure it is.

  14. I'm an engineer working as a programmer.  5 years of Bacherlor's Degree, 3 years of Masters.  It took me a while to pay off that horrendous student loan to get that Master's degree.

My company doesn't offer me any benefits.  That is - I get paid when I work.  If I'm sick, I don't get paid.  If I go on vacation, I don't get paid.  If it's a holiday and the office is closed (11 holiday days a year), I get a mandatory un-paid vacation.  I don't get health insurance (if my husband did not have health insurance, I'd be buying my own obamacare or paying the obamacare tax).  I don't get retirement, 401K, pension, whatever.  None of that.  I literally only get $ for each hour worked.

So, I feel we're all in the same boat with teachers here.  In my neighborhood high school, they start school at 7:30 and get off at 2:30.  They get all kinds of holidays (a lot more than 11), vacations, early release days, Teacher Planning Days, Weather Days, etc. etc.  So, in effect, the school-year is 36 teaching weeks.  My work year is 49 weeks and 4 days.

The entry-level salary of a Teacher is the same as the entry-level nurse and the entry-level policeman in my neck of the woods.  And yes, they are paid a lot less than California or New York.  Well, we don't get taxed like California or New York either.  No State Tax is quite a big chunk!

Anyway, policeman here usually picks up extra jobs manning Football Games or Concerts or doing security drive-bys for some Homeowner's Association or NightClub.  They get more money per hour on those extra jobs than their regular jobs that sometimes they could almost double that salary with the extra things.

Nurses pick up extra jobs by double shifting.

Teachers pick up extra jobs by running summer camps or doing tutoring.

I pick up extra jobs by picking up extra short-term contracts.

This is the beauty of America - or used to be.  It's been looking bad out there.  In the America of old where there were not 95 million people without jobs, you can let market capitalism work to help you find money while you fulfill your dream of service to society.

So, if you really want teachers pay to increase - work on improving the economy!  We're all on the same boat!

Wow, makes me glad that I don't live in the US!

  15. I was just watching the Modern Prophets video on President John Taylor, early on it mentioned that when he was praying next to Niagara Falls he had spoke in tongues.  I've never really heard of LDS speaking in tongues before so was wondering, what if any experiences people had of this gift of the Spirit?  During my time at bible college there was much speaking in tongues during prayer meetings and worship services (well there would be as it was an Assemblies of God college!). Though I personally believed that this particular gift was more to do with others being able to understand the gospel message in their own language even when it wasn't being spoken by the person talking, like in the book of Acts and not some random sounding babble that was often heard at college! Not that I'm denigrating what was at the time a very spiritual experience, I've just changed my own personal view on what I believe that particular gift was and is.  So what if any experiences do you have with this gift, and what do you think its role/purpose is today for the church?

  16. You are nervous of a thing you don't know, of a thing you have not yet learned about.  Your fear is a fear of the unknown.  Education is the cure.

Because you and your police are unarmed, you are all sitting ducks for the armed.  You are not safer, you just don't have to feel your fear of the unknown.

If you want to feel 100 times more fear, wait until some armed bad guy comes around you.  And then you will also feel helpless, naked, and undefended.

    dc

I was nervous because its so rare, I'm 47 so as you can guess guns are not something that are seen often in the UK.  The guns I saw were with the police, I've only ever seen one hand gun in civilian ownership which was before the ban.  The figures speak for themselves, we have strict gun controls, with low gun ownership and very few gun related deaths, compared with very high gun ownership and rocketing gun deaths in the US.  I certainly know where I would feel safer.

    This makes interesting reading:

The US, though, is the only country in the world where, following a mass shooting, the nation has responded with loosening, not tightening, gun laws. After 23 people were killed in a mass shooting in Texas in 1991, the state pushed through a law permitting the carrying of concealed weapons. Even the murder of 26 children and adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012 saw a call for fewer, not more gun law restrictions. It was reported a year later by PBS that 27 American states had passed 93 laws expanding gun rights, including measures that let people carry concealed weapons in churches and campuses, or even to use them in self-defence when drunk. Some schools even now allow their teachers to go armed.

Where are you gathering your statistics: http://www.citizensreportuk.org/reports/murders-fatal-violence-uk.html

Everything I read online, is above 30.  Still a lower number, but definitely not below 30.

It fluctuates but averages out at around 30 or so deaths, the site you linked to shows data upto 2013, according to the office of national statistics in 2012/13 there were 30 gun related deaths in UK.

     http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/crime-stats/crime-statistics/focus-on-violent-crime-and-sexual-offences--2012-13/rpt---chapter-3---weapons.html

  17. I'm all for private property rights.  I respect the rights of businessowners, homeowners, private schools and universities and whatnot, to ban guns.

But they're stupid if they do so without hardening security.  Because banning guns does squat to make people safe.  They may make people feel safe, but that's it.

Strange as we had two mass shooting incidents in the mid 80's and banned handguns and an assortment of other firearms. We have below 30 gun related deaths a year nowadays.  Seems to have worked fine here.
