I guess that's another area that the UK and the US differs on, hunting. Bloodsports (other than fishing) are seen as brutal and inhumane to animals in the UK. Target shooting does happen but not with pistols as they are banned. Archery is a minority sport and we have on occasion done it as part of the PE curriculum in the school I work at, but then I don't believe there is any regulations or checks put in place for bow ownership in then UK (afaik).

Well I'm 47 and live in what is considered a rough part of the city and I've had to defend myself once, I didn't need a gun to do that.
-
Ok lets look at that then: UK (2010) 0.25 per 100,000 US (2011) 10.25 per 100,000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_death_rate

Would something like this be discussed with those in authority within the church? Wonder how much of this personal revelation stuff is floating around in one form or another?

As a teacher and an educationalist I've found that as the standards in learning and education rise the more the revulsion of and the the need/want to own a weapon diminishes. Why would a law abiding and well educated person want to own something that has one sole intended purpose, to kill.

Thanks for the reply, what do you think of the windows tablets, would you recommend them over an android device?
-
Thanks, think I will stick with android for the time being.

Not at all, I'm an outsider looking in, and all I see is those who look for some kind of solution to the gun problems you have being squashed under the weight of the gun lobby. When appalling incidents like Dunblane happened in the UK the public outpouring of outrage that this should never happen again was universal. I don't see that happening in the US, even after many such incidents happening over a long period of time, after the initial shock the gun lobby swoops in and takes over the show. And as someone posted above that we Brits didn't go through the frontier mentality of the 19th Century, that may be true but then its no longer the 19th Century and you don't have to face any of those problems any more.

I've been thinking of getting a Windows tablet for a while and was wondering if anyone had any experience of using them? Does the church offer its apps for Windows, i.e. Gospel Library, LDS Tools, Family Tree etc?

Not really, what it does show is that in a country with strongly regulated firearms control there is a small number of firearm related incidents and a low death to incident ratio. But where there is light firearm regulation and large gun ownership the incidents of gun related incidents and deaths goes through the roof! 10K plus deaths from firearms a year does seem to be a problem that no one in the US seems to want to sort out, and to me that is very sad.

Your actually quoting the Daily Mail to support your argument? That in itself is a fail on an epic proportion! Take a look here: http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/crime-stats/crime-statistics/focus-on-violent-crime-and-sexual-offences--2012-13/rpt---chapter-3---weapons.html There were 8,135 firearm related incidents in the UK in 2012/13, that includes all types of firearms including replica weapons, air weapons, shotguns, pistols and rifles. There were 30 fatalities in the UK in 2012/13 involving firearms, how many where there in the same period in the US? The figures in the report include air weapons, and replica weapons which account for 51% of the firearm related incidents in the UK over the 2012/13 period. How does that relate to their use in firearms related incident in the US?

Anti America what? Seems that all the big gun news from the states that I've seen recently has been of people who have legally owned guns shooting people or their children finding them and shooting themselves or others. We in the UK had two incidents of legally owned gun owners going on a rampage and killing people, the second incident was the Dunblane massacre where 16 young children and there teacher were gunned down with legally owned firearms. The response was a public outcry and a call for a ban on all hand guns which followed soon afterwards. Where as in the US the Sandy Hook school shootings for example the exact opposite is seen to happen with the gun lobby out in force defending the rights of people to own guns even in the face of such a tragedy. That is what most people I know can't get their heads around, that the right to own guns seems to be more important than stopping such tragedies from happening.
-
Why would I need a gun? And you can own guns in the UK its just very hard to get one. Hand guns where banned in the UK because of the public outcry after a school shooting, the politicians reacted to the over whelming public outcry for the banning of such weapons. Where as every other week you hear of school shootings in the US where the reaction is the opposite.

Played a lot of historical stuff when I was younger, 25mm Napoleonic, 1/300 scale WW2 and modern stuff, a bit of WW2 and modern naval. Also did the Warhammer, had a huge Lizardmen army, a Night goblin army as well! Never really got into the 40k stuff, just seemed daft having orks in space! Would love to get into it again but got rid of my figures a long time ago, although I do have a Warmaster undead army in a box some where!!

When I read the title of the thread I though it was about other religions, i.e. Hindu's, Muslims, Sikhs etc. and not other denominations like Roman Catholics, Baptists, Assemblies of God etc. I believe when people label other Christians as being another religion adds to the view that we as LDS are not Christian but another religion all together.

Jewish and LDS Temples question
Latter Days Guy replied to Latter Days Guy's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Thanks for the post, your linked article was also very helpful. I'm seeing more clearly now how the apostasy and falling away took so much from the faith that only a restoration could sort it out properly. Not that I'm saying I didn't believe in the apostasy in the first place, but informative posts like yours and with the studies I've been doing it has added more to my understanding of the event and its effects on the church before the apostasy, during the apostasy and after the restoration. Putting the flesh back on the bone so to speak! -
Jewish and LDS Temples question
Latter Days Guy replied to Latter Days Guy's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Hopefully in October/November time. -
I think I own one white shirt, which I remember wearing when I went to the temple! Haven't seen it since!! I usually wear a light blue one (which was what I was wearing when I was blessing the sacrament on Sunday, shock horror!!).

Jewish and LDS Temples question

Thanks, found this all very helpful. The first link was very informative and gave me much to think about, especially liked the closing passage in the final note section. -
When I was baptized I wore a white shirt and black pants. Didn't have those snazzy jumpsuit things back in 1987!
