Everybody falls asleep in church sometimes.

I don't know how fit your ward is on average, but I find the thought of some of our guys in their wives' garments a lot more humorous and less nauseating than if I was under the impression their wives wore underthings that even Victoria's Secret is careful about showing in the catalog.

I would expect it to depend on the circumstances. For example, converts, in an existing common law marriage, might be recognized, but I would expect it to be strongly discouraged among existing members. One of the problems is that you can't get a marriage license if you're already married. I don't know if there's an exception for making it official with an existing common law spouse, but if not, then the couple would basically have to get divorced, get the license and then remarry. I can't see the Church encouraging divorce just to satisfy paperwork requirements.

Not sure about states that don't have common law marriage provisions, but here, agreeing to be married, living together within the state and presenting yourselves as husband and wife is enough to qualify as a common law marriage. The scenario presented above would definitely qualify, and for all normal purposes, a common law marriage is as valid as a state sanctioned marriage, with the date of marriage being the first time you satisfied all three points of the common law marriage. (If you went on an out-of-state honeymoon, for example, the date might be when you returned and began actually living together in the state.) Thus, the couple would still be married, and the paperwork issues would simply be to recognize that it was actually a regular marriage from the start. The only time I could see it being an issue for a Texas couple would be if they were out of state, since the lack of documentation makes it likely that other states would refuse to recognize the common law marriage unless they have similar laws.

Exactly; I've had to clarify for some people that if I really could pull quarters out of thin air, I wouldn't have been working at a hotel for $8/hr. I love watching a good sleight of hand artist, and in some ways, I even prefer watching one do an effect I know and/or have used, and do it so well that I have to really think about whether he could have done it the way I know. Like any other skill, actually doing something makes you appreciate the skill it takes to do it very well. When an effect is too dependent on gimmicks and not on performance, I get bored with it pretty quickly. As for CA's stage persona, that's exactly what it is. Out of the spotlight, he's just a slightly grungy slacker type, which makes for an easy transition. I'd rather watch Harry Anderson, Paul Daniels, or ignore Penn and watch Teller, (Penn is mostly a distraction anyway; Teller is one of the best sleight artists around, and made even better by Penn keeping everyone's attention) but they don't get much air time these days.

If you spend some time watching the Youtube videos, you'll notice that in some of them, the people he gets to help with certain effects start looking familiar. He'll have a girl dressed goth in one, and business casual in another, but it's the same girl. Some of them are played to regular street crowds, but a few of the more difficult effects use shills.

Imagining them in each other's underwear works too. Sometimes too well, though, unless you're really good at suppressing a giggling fit.

My mom summed it up for us once; those people say we lack the filters, but they don't realize that they're only hearing what gets past the filter. If they had any idea what was being stopped, they'd just go away.

Who took "In God We Trust" off of the new one dollar coin?

It's interesting that they also moved the date and mint mark to the edge. Guess that means these things won't have much collector value in conditions low enough for those to be missing. -
I'm going to suggest something that will sound strange, but give it a try; addiction recovery. Anger is addictive, even though, like the first few cigarettes or the first hangover, you think you can't get hooked on it because it feels so awful. Get in there and let them help you break the habit before it sets in too deeply. I know what you're going through, and it's something I wouldn't wish on anyone. Just know that even though it sometimes feels like the Lord has turned his back on you, on closer inspection, you will always find that He's waiting for you to turn back to Him.

I wrote this after I ran for city council last year. Our city consistently votes 70+% conservative in Federal and state elections, but our local governments tend to be 60-80% liberal, largely because of the low turnout.

Are we allowed to eat/drink vinegar/vinaigrette?

What if you then liquified the chicken and drank it? Chocolate covered espresso beans aren't a beverage, either. -

Between Khan, Open Yale Courses and UMKC, I have kept myself up a lot of times that I shouldn't have. There are a lot of classes I'd like to take, but don't need credit for. -
Don't you use NHTSA's Guide to the Visual Detection of DWI Motorists? 10+ under the posted limit is a pretty high probability single-cue indicator, IIRC. Even if your department doesn't officially use that guide, it should be easily defensible in court. If they're clean, stopping them and pointing out that driving ridiculously slowly is suspicious behavior might help reduce the problem in the future.

I got passed by a cop while I was going 22 in a 15 zone on my bike. Oddly, the park streets are 15 zones, but the MUP speed limit is 20.

This is pretty much my opinion on it; proper liability for damages, and treat fraudulent statements in advertising as fraud. Instead we have government organizations like the FDA redefining terms so that advertisers can lie and get away with it. Labeling laws ahould also be handled in the same way as some states do for contracts. You can get away with selling a GRAPE flavored DRINK that contains nothing resembling grapes. Treat "weasel words" intentionally hidden like that as fraud, and you make much more informed consumers.

Pepper spray. Let him explain to the cops why his crotch is soaked, but there's not much on the outside of his pants. As a bonus, I can guarantee you he's not going to want to touch it for days, for any reason. (Also some helpful advice; when slicing habaneros, wash your hands before going to the bathroom.)

Maybe I shouldn't feed the missionaries; the local diner does a dollar burger night (good burgers, too) every week, so I invited the missionaries for 6PM. At 5:39 I got a call that they'd been in a wreck and were busy with the paperwork. Nobody was hurt, but their vehicle was pretty much destroyed. Hopefully, He's not trying to tell me that taking them somewhere we can all pig out for less than the cost of a good buffet is cheating

When something is your fault and you didn't realize it
NightSG replied to Backroads's topic in Advice Board
Well, I guess if that happens a lot, then you should take up smoking, drinking, overeating and hanging out in establishments of ill repute to see how many people will quit those because of you. Seriously, though, make a reasonable effort to communicate and undo the damage. If the other person won't let you, all you can do is pray for them and for yourself. -
Getting fed up and really considering going inactive

Are you sure you're going to the same church? We don't require a pulse.
