Catholics, Anglicans, Methodists and Lutherans, at least. It's not exactly uncommon, though as mentioned, most faiths do it at late afternoon or evening meetings. Methodists around here use it as an excuse for a pancake supper, usually, so it's rarely seen outside the church unless (as usual) a bunch of them hit the cafe to finish filling up after the pancakes run out. Judging from the sign at the Lutheran church, (and a few people I didn't recognize at Taco Bell later with ashes on their foreheads) it appears they do pretty much the same. Depending on his specific faith's beliefs, (and that may come down to a particular congregation, at least among Methodists and Lutherans) it may very much be equivalent. Some remove it at will, holding the act of receiving it to be the operative ritual of penance, others leave it for the duration of a group service or personal prayer, while others hold that the wearing of the ashes for the remainder of the day is necessary to fulfill a requirement of public penance. (A benefit of doing it in the evening, since you don't have to refrain from washing your face all day. In a hot climate, that can be uncomfortable, even this early in the year.) Either way, it is viewed as something requested or commanded by God or by those ordained to authority by Him, so absolutely on par with the wearing of garments for LDS, the Orthodox Jew's kippah, or any of the Sikh's constant symbols. One might say even more so since it's something to be maintained only for part of one day a year, rather than a daily imposition for the rest of one's life. I doubt it. One is more likely to be unaware of the existence of religion in general than the fact that there have been numerous lawsuits won against schools resulting from teachers overstepping their bounds regarding religious observances, Scripture reading or voluntary group prayer during free time, etc. and yet they keep happening because teachers refuse to learn from them. I really can't imagine that any teacher certification classes and/or new hire orientation in the last couple of decades haven't included some strongly worded reminders to tread very lightly where religion is involved, and yet they keep stepping right into the middle of messes like these. At the very least, this teacher should have contacted the office to clarify the rule as soon as the student voiced a religious objection.
  2. I'm really just waiting for a bishop with a more common name so I can put it on one of the cups. When he's the only one in the ward with that name, it's a little too obvious.
  3. Done it. Part of the fun of a pocketwatch is how obvious you can be about checking it. Maybe someday when I'm sleep deprived enough. As a lesson? Some converts might notice, but plenty of members would only question the names. Doesn't work on Baptists. Sometimes works on Methodists. Track your success and we'll get a chart going.
  4. I have wanted to pick up a well used coffee pot from Goodwill to sneak into the kitchen when no one is looking. Accessorized with all the basic supplies and a few moderately stained mugs. Right up there with putting a bag of popcorn in the microwave and setting the timer to pop it during meetings on Fast Sunday. Or the same with some bread dough in the oven.
  5. Before or after imbeciles assume he's Confederate Brigadier General Nelson?
  6. Not really any worse than the music choices at single adult dances.
  7. But do they all have to be at Cici's Pizza when we're taking my oldest for a birthday dinner?
  8. This; plus labor is cheaper and gets a better deal anyway. Here, an employer can pay $2-3 less per hour than a comparable job in D/FW, and the employees still have a higher standard of living. I've seen upper-middle-class empty lots in Dallas suburbs going for twice as much as a 2,000sf brick house in excellent condition here. 750sf one bedroom apartments costing as much per month as the mortgage on the 2/2 house here. I can bike to work in 30 minutes or drive in just over 10, and use less gas in a week than I did in a day in Dallas. Car insurance is about half. Grass fed free range beef and local produce is common at roadside stands even cheaper than the "normal" stuff at the grocery store. I absolutely refused to work for a temp agency that was headquartered in the Galleria when I was there, specifically because no client cares where their offices are, and they were wasting tens of thousands per month on a fancy office and upscale address that could/should have been passed on to the temps earning that money for them. Given the ease and reliability of shipping from non-hub cities now, I feel the same about most manufacturing and pretty much all online businesses still based in major cities.
  9. VP must be eligible to be President, specifically because of succession and the need to act as President immediately in cases of temporary or permanent incapacitation. As I recall, every time a sitting President in recent history needed to be sedated for a medical procedure, the VP has officially been in place as acting President. After all, if an enemy found out with enough prep time, that would be a prime opportunity to strike and capitalize on any delay in the transfer of authority.
  10. It's all part of the preparation for the next major revelation. Look for a change in meetinghouse artwork next.
  11. All the more reason to stock up; minimizing transport risk. Assuming one isn't a complete idiot, checks vehicle equipment and generally obeys traffic laws, one trip with six months worth is vastly safer than 180 trips carrying just enough for that day. Good to see you've finally looked in the mirror. Rational folks don't believe that possibly selling a product to people who seek it out is five times worse than attempted murder, no matter how many times it's done.
  12. What amount is large enough to prove dealing? I bought 250 doses of ibuprofen yesterday, and I'm not selling, or even sharing it. I used to only buy cigarettes 200-400 at a time. For that matter, at one point I bought five pounds of loose tobacco to roll, and never sold any of it.
  13. So, we either hook up a sub-channel decoder to the gene sequencer, or just get 4chan to convince all the gullible ones that it's already been done.
  14. And? It's still just possession. Whether that's because they were too lazy or incompetent to find actual proof of dealing or just because the guy buys his meth at Costco, they still didn't even try to charge him with dealing.
  15. And yet the charge was still just possession. Yeah, his history of 2-3 separate incidents of possession under 4 grams, one DV and a few PIs. Real supervillain there. So much worse than the attempted murderer who topped out at 20 years.
  16. If any of it was really concern for the environment, there's nothing stopping them from reducing their own impact without needing any legislation. Forcing others to do it isn't about the environment; it's about power. Same for helping anyone; their millions/billions won't be available to feed or clothe or "provide a minimum standard of living" for anyone. http://thefederalist.com/2019/02/12/green-new-deal-simply-delusional-excuse-seize-power/
  17. From our DA this week: “Hopefully a 99-year sentence for simple possession of methamphetamine will communicate to people who sell and use narcotics that Erath County is not a hospitable locale to do their crimes.” Possession is the only charge on the table.
  18. Unless, of course, it's possession of "more than you need for yourself. By the same logic, every LDS home should be subject to health inspections as a grocery store for having too much food inside.
