  1. It is a sad thing...but why is it a sad thing "about our church"? Seems like you're blaming the church for the fact that sinners don't want to stop sinning? Are you implying that preaching against sin should be abandoned?
  2. I don't disagree with anything you say here (with the, perhaps, exception being the usage of the word "resort"). What I am suggesting is that the fact that what you say is true is actually evidence of harm to society.
  3. That's a bit of a stretch of what most, reasonably, would think of the meaning of "possessed".
  4. It's an interesting thought. Is it true? Does it cost nothing to disengage reality? By softening what is harsh, does it carry no message? I wonder if maybe the message it carries to do so has been more harmful than we might like to admit.
  5. Is there really a belief that the reason the Spirit visits the temple is only because it's quiet there? Of course I don't know for sure, but my guess is that this would be offensive to God. Do you have any concept of what an incredible blessing the temple is? You obviously don't or you would never ask/state such a thing.
  6. What we don't do, of course, on the Lord's day is only a part of the story. What we do do is just as important.
  7. Sunday is a symbol of a covenant. Anything that is not representative of that covenant is out.
  8. But these two options ignore the other half of what agency is. Accountability. You don't have to remove choice to remove agency. You can also remove accountability. Now, doesn't that sound more appealing than the two options you mention? Is there any reason to suppose that 1/3 part of heaven followed Satan based on the promise of being made either slaves or stupid? Particularly as compared to a promise that whatever they chose they would simply not be accountable?
  9. Let's further convolute the matter. https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2011/10/dare-to-stand-alone?lang=eng How does standing alone fit with unity?
  10. If you want to apply "ancient" definitions to things...well, we're pretty much guaranteed to have a communications breakdown. The scripture in 1 Sam is about obedience -- or in other words, doing what's right instead of what's wrong in the supposed name of some principle like sacrifice, love, or mercy. No. You cannot do wrong and choose right. If you are prideful you are choosing the wrong. You may be choosing partial right. But you can also pay tithing but not pay fast offerings...and the wrong part is still wrong in spite of the right part. The only way to choose right is to do, think, act, and be right. And if one is prideful, then one is not choosing the right. Pride, as we well know, is wrong. And wrong is never right.
  11. This is true. Matthew 10:34 - Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. Certainly there is a covenant, however, to do right. To teach right. To follow right. To choose right. To speak right. To think right. To act right. It's an interesting thing to me that you are trying to separate "being" from these things. As if someone can "be" right by doing, choosing, speaking, thinking, and acting wrong in any regard. I believe my thinking about the value of sacrificing right was made in the scripture I posted from 1 Sam. The sacrifice of "right" is, never can be, and never will be, a good thing. Sacrifice is ONLY good within the confines of obedience. And wrong is not rendered right by sacrifice, nor any other principle.
  12. I don't think I misunderstand. In previous discussions we have covered this. In a marriage, for example, you have stated that sacrifice is more important than being right. I contend that being right is the most important thing. You have taken that to mean that I believe one must always be stubborn and win arguments, which is not being right at all.
  13. Evil. What on earth does that have to do with my comment?
  14. No one's dissing sacrifice or the becoming sacred by it. That wasn't Traveler's full point though. His point was that the first step in unity is sacrifice. Anatess disagrees (as do I). The first step in unity is righteousness. By contrast, Traveler is saying that unrighteous sacrifice is the better choice. By way of response, I quote 1 Sam 15:22: Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice
  15. Sure, but sacrifice what? And for whom?
  16. The time dedicated to working on the temple in Nauvoo (1 in every 10 days) never substituted for tithing (1/10th of increase).
  17. Of course righteous is a modeling of what would have been rightwise or rightways, as in on the right path, as in being right. Though I gather that Traveler struggles with the difference between winning a debate and actually being right. Edit: Stinkin' typos!!
  18. Why not make it 10% each? :)
  19. You miss the point entirely. His credibility is not destroyed by the insult. His credibility is detroyed by saying nothing that Vort ever says is useful, which anyone knows is a ridiculous statement, as Vort tends to make quite useful comments, whether one agrees with him or not. There is no double standard.
  20. Such a comment made to Vort fairly fully destroys any semblance of credibility you you may have...never mind. You had no credibility. Still, what a ridiculous comment.

  22. Sorry for the lack of clarity on my part. I was attempting to imply that his unprovoked attack that something "sick" was in the air, was itself the "sick" thing.
  23. Awesomely spoken, sir! Well deserving of an emoticon. Eeny, meeny, miny....
  24. It depends on the change expected I think. There is a time and a place, I think, even in a marriage to throw down a "knock it off or else" sort of line in the sand. For the most part though, forgiveness, understanding, long-suffering, etc., is the better way to a good marriage.
