  1. I will always remember Soylent Green. It's made out of people.... a great ending!
  2. I think this one was EY-Y, but it was the same format as the one you mentioned. I never posted; just lurked. I learned a lot of science from those guys though.
  3. Cool, because if you had stated otherwise I know of more than a few LDS scientists (I used to lurk on their duscussion group years ago) who would have taken offense to such a suggestion.
  4. I am just curious, are you taking the position that one has to accept the creation story in the Bible as a literal event in order to be a LDS member in good standing?
  5. Regardless, there are many smart people who believe that no, GW isn't the crisis it's cracked up to be. Take a look at this link. Learn about people like Dr. Edward Wegman, a professor at the Center for Computational Statistics at George Mason University, chair of the National Academy of Sciences' Committee on Applied and Theoretical Statistics, and board member of the American Statistical Association. No, he doesn't work for Exxon. I know that. Everybody just "assumes" I am taking a position that says there is global warming because I take an absolutionist statement to task, or because I point out that - whether it is real or not - cities, states, and countries, are passing laws and spending money on the issue and acting as though it is a reality by doing so.
  6. Interesting how when I state 'GW is a hoax' it gets your undies in a bunch, but when you categorically state that there is no God, or that he is a myth, you're somehow more 'enlightened' than us fools that believe in him. sigh... Not true..... I cannot "prove" there is no God. I just see no more reason to believe in any posited God than you do to believe in the religion of VooDoo, or the invisible Dragon I have living under my house. your attitude only shows that there is an innate drive within that causes us to worship something greater than ourselves. I am not worhsipping anything. I haven't even stated an opinion one global warming on way or another other than a tongue in cheek joke about blow torches in the antarctic. The issue isn't even in my top ten. I figure I'll be dead and gone in 15-20 years so it doesn't matter that much to me in any event. You just assumed I took a stand because I took you to task for absolutionist statement stating there was no such thing. Now that you have qualified it, I have no issues. And if you think it a hoax I don't blame you for being so annoyed given that laws are being passed, and money being spent all over the country, and the world, for what you think is a hoax. If I held your position I'd be annoyed too.
  7. See, now I don't have any issue with these sort of opinions. I will say you should be pretty upset because on a global scale there is more action being taken to address the issue then there is talk. Enough people apparently believe it - including people in other nations who are not in the least bit influenced by Cruise or Gore - that legislation is being passed, rules and laws are being enacted and enforced, and money is being spent to address the issue. All this doesn't mean it is 'real', but apparently enough folks believe it is real enough that they quit talking about it and started acting on it.
  8. Here is the difference.... he categorically said that global warming was a "hoax". It is one thing to have an opinion, but it is quite another to state in absolute certainty that you "know" something is a "hoax". If you state without any doubt about a subject with an enormous amount of scientific complexities, then I suspect one might need at least some credentials.
  9. So are you suggesting you are smarter than all of those people who also can read the various evidences and think there 'is' global warming?
  10. I think the glaciers and ice packs have been duped into melting, in support of this "so called" warming, by those with liberal educations. You didn't get the memo? It is a secret army of liberals with blow torches. Al Gore set up it. They had a big success recently in Anarctica.
  11. sixpacktr - It may exist or it may not..... but I was just wondering when you became the ultimate authority on the subject, where you got your degrees in environmental science, or meterology, etc.... that gives you the expertise to make such a definitive and assured statement? I only ask because an awful lot of cities, states, and nations are passing a lot of laws, and spending a lot of money on the issue who are equally assured it is real. I figure your expertise in this field must be akin to Hawkings expertise in the field of physics.
  12. By the way if GW is happening why did Oregon have one of it's coldest winters in a long while? I am not taking a position on the debate but the easy answer to this question is; you are talking about a Microenvironment. If there is global warming then global is the key word, and that would be talking about a Macroenvironment. It is sort of like if somebody loses their job in a booming economy.... well he/she could say; "if the economy is booming how come I just got laid off?"
  13. But if you seek God out, THEN He can respond without violating your agency!!! See how that works? He's not violating your agency because YOU are SEEKING the relationship with Him! You are choosing to find Him. THEN He can respond and let you know "Yes, I exist." and your agency is left intact. That was pretty much the way a nice missionary who came by the the other night put it. My response was, "Even if such a God were to exist I am not really all that interested in knowing Him nor being with Him in eternity".
  14. The Church teaches that if I continue to live like this I will end up in one of the lower Kingdoms. Guess what? That's fine with me. Yeah, I hear that. Given the definition/description of this version of God, and the folks who will be in the CK, I think I'd rather be in a lower Kingdom as well. Nothing against those folks or that God per se.... to each their own.... just a "different strokes" sort of thing.
  15. Imagine earning real money that doesn't depreciate in value over time. Imagine no income tax. Imagine no undeclared "wars". Imagine no foreign aid. Imagine no Social Security. Imagine no Medicaid / Medical. Imagine no welfare-state. Imagine no EPA. Imagine no gun-control. Imagine no legal abortions. Imagine no Judicial legislation. Imagine a Congress that follows its' constitutional duties. Imagine a President who doesn't ignore the constitution. Actually in your libertarian political world things like welfare, evironmental protection, and abortions would still be there, they just wouldn't be under the purview of the federal government.
  16. Wouldn't it be great if we actually had a two-party system in America? Unfortunately there is no real, substantial difference between the "two" parties, other than in how they are spelled. Uh oh.... time to start up my flying pig..... I am in agreement with a Bircher.
  17. However, should we not emulate the Savour and set the example? Uhh.... other than a couple of specific things stated in the Bible.... most swear words are cultural and only a swear word in the manner in how they used. The is nothing wrong with saying there was a arrect made in a cock fighting. Or look at that nice pussy cat. So to say "do not swear is some sort of religious issue" is hardly correct. It is more of a "what is correct in a civilized society" type of thing.
  18. LOL on the thread.... one going on long trips I'd listen to Ozzie live, and at the beginning of the CD he says "lets go @#@#@# crazy. Now my then six year old knew darn well the "f" word was REALLY bad. But apparently she didn't know exactly what the "f" word was. She says to me; "daddy play the CD where hes says, "lets go @#@#ing crazy". It was so cute and sweet the way she said it. I said, "Reni you are not in trouble but you just said the "f" word". Now at age twelve she is the one who chews me out when I swear!
  19. I used to work in a fast food place and people always ordered an artery hardening meal with a diet coke. Easy one. Because that 180 calories is one less mile I have to run, and one more thing I get to eat, to work off, and make up for, the occasional fast food meal.
  20. Publicly funded "education" will never work. Publically funded education works very well at the Secondary level.
  21. 4.I could hang out with people in bars, but that would make me feel bad inside. I much prefer to enjoy the moral boost i get when i sing hymns at church. I like being around spiritual people. I am a little confused with this answer. I am an athiest and I don't hang out out bars.
  22. I'm a big fan of Love and Logic, which is all about giving kids choices and having them accept responsibility. Exactly. Kid is jumping on the table the kid has a choice.... either stop jumping on the table, or go to time out. If the kids keeps jumping then they have made their choice.

    Homeschooling

FWIW, I like Saxon for math. My 6th grade aged child is working in the HS Algebra book and rarely needs my help it is so well set up. For English/reading I am having her do GED stuff. I figure by the end of her technical 6th grade year she could pass the GED. Science is Scholastic science, various chemistry kits, astronomy (we have a nice telescope) and basically stuff that makes science fun. Social sciences is eclectic now. She has studied history going back to pre-history. Social studies has been thrown in all over the place. She watches various educational TV programs (I pick them) for specific interesting learning. Also, a lot of geograpy using written and on-line resources. Writing.... dang, she wrote a 15 page short story. A really good one. On (mostly) her own. She basically woke up in the middle of the night and penned the first two pages. Then she tried to follow it up, but it didn't even seem like the same person. So I had her outline the rest, using the original two pages, and told her to write when she 'felt it'. She did and it worked. I don't think I wrote 15 pages of anything until I got into grad school. PE - Black belt, national rated/champion wrestler and all of that training, boxing, and more activities than I can remember. Art/humanities.... get help from the school district.... she is the Junior High/Middle School band President. She plays percussion (1st chair), baritone, keyboard, and guitar. Other..... whatever I find interesting. We travel a lot (for the wrestling), so she gets a good real world look at geography as well as geology. For example; we went to the Grand Canyon which is a terrific geology lesson and it's done in a way that makes learning 'cool'. Something the schools - teaching to the test - don't often do. Yeah I did some bragging, but if you have a talented kid, homeschooling is an excellent way of bringing out those talents instead of accepting mediocrity.
  24. Oh, and the funny thing is...... I am a registered Republican but am in reality a split my ticket type. But sadly deluded amongst the crowd I described. It was kind of fun though..... and they started it!
  25. Being a Democrat LDS - especially in Utah - is sort of like being a Baptist Democrat in the south. You are rare, and those really into their politics barely consider you part of your religion. Heck, you only need to read the venom directed at a certain Senator from Nevada over the past couple of years, on this very board, to see that. Let me put it this way.... during election season..... if I were to sit in on a PH session..... or especially a HP session..... in almost any Ward in the Western United States.... I bet I could get into a heated discussion..... that would have them talking about that 'day' for weeks.... if I were to attend during election season. Been there, done that.
