  1. One of the Assistants to the Mission President when I arrived on my mission was called as a Mission President only ten years after finishing his mission. He was a really dynamic Assistant to the President, but I was still greatly surprised that he was called to be a Mission President only ten years later.
  2. As far as I'm concerned, President Monson, speaking as the mouth-piece of the Lord, can say the opposite today to what he said yesterday, thereby falsifying what he said yesterday, and making true what he says today. And then tomorrow, he can say that what he said the day before yesterday was actually the truth, and what he said yesterday was untrue, and that would also be true. It would be puzzling and surprising if this actually happened, but I see no point in trying to reconcile former or current positions with new positions if I know that he is speaking as the Lord's mouth-piece. I think there are some risks in having one's testimony dependant on the unchangeability of various, individual little bits of doctrine and practices.
  3. It was 38 degrees celcius today, which I think is about 100 degrees fahrenheit. When I looked around during Sacrament meeting, about 30 - 35% of the men who would usually be wearing a suit jacket during church wore not wearing one today. What is the practice in your ward when it comes to wearing suit jackets at church on hot days?
  4. (New Testament | Revelation 5:6)6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. We discussed this verse in Sunday School today and no one was able to shed any light on who or what the seven Spirits of God are or what they do, or what is their relationship to the Spirit of God mentioned in many other places throughout the scriptures? . This is the only verse that I know of in the scriptures that refers to God having more than one Spirit. Is there anyone here who can shed light on these questions? Also, is there any significance in the fact that in this verse, Spirits is spelt with an upper, rather than a lower, case S? 5. Maybe its a picture of a pig in a kitten costume? Or perhaps a picture of a kitten in a pig costume? Depending on how you see things, of course.
  6. I think that if half the members of the church were members of the great and abominable church, someone in authority would have plainly told us by now. One of the key responsibilities of a prophet is to raise a voice of warning, and if so many of us were in the great and abominable church, I expect that we would have been plainly warned about it by now. The fact that we have not been plainly warned about it suggests that either the prophets are not doing their job, which is unlikely, or that we are, in fact, not part of the great and abominable church, which I think is more likely. As for President Taylor's teaching that Do they do many wonderful works in the name of Jesus? No. While I am not too familiar with the activities of other Christian faiths, I would be very surprised if most of them did not do their good works in the name of Jesus. If they are doing their good works in the name of Jesus, then I think it is more likely that they, rather than the LDS, are those to whom Christ is referring when He says depart from me.
  7. Clearly, Jojo's avatar is a shape shifter - it changes appearance depending on who is looking at it and how they look at it. Kudos to Pam's IT team for building a website that is able to handle the shape shifter file format. :}
  8. 34 And the brother of Jared being a large and mighty man, and a man highly favored of the Lord, Jared, his brother, said unto him: Cry unto the Lord, that he will not confound us that we may not understand our words. Would Jared’s intention be made clearer if he had used a word with a meaning completely opposite to the word that he did use, eg, see below: 34 And the brother of Jared being a large and mighty man, and a man highly favored of the Lord, Jared, his brother, said unto him: Cry unto the Lord, that he will not confound us that we may not misunderstand our words. It seems to make more sense if Jared had implored his brother for the Lord's help so that they would not misunderstand each other rather than asking for the Lord's help so that might not understand each other.
  9. There are a few people on this site who served their mission in the Philippines. My nephew is currently serving in the Quezon City Mission.
  10. Did he have a favourite, quiet, peaceful, outdoors place he liked to go, where you could also go, and just quietly remember and feel and contemplate? Did he keep any journals or photos that you could go through? Are there other family members nearby who you could meet with and share memories? Could you spend some time writing in your journal about your memories of him? How about starting a scrap book of photos and writings by/about your dad, that you and other family members could add to over the years?
  11. tyres? you mean those four (or is it five? or three?) black round things underneath the car? They can be changed? Why would anyone want or need to do that? I quite like the ones I have and all they do is go round in circles every time I drive!
  12. I have a flat tyre at the moment, can you send her over here please?
  13. Satan is more real than Santa
  14. Another small but important correction: Perhaps not a real person, in the sense that he has a body, but definitely a real being.
  15. I expect that the knowledge, skills, faith and experience that you gain from your mission will help you better handle this situation when you return. I've sometimes thought that having a girlfriend while on a mission is like having extra baggage at the airport - its nice to have those things in the extra baggage, but there can be a price for carrying it around.
  16. Sorry to doubt you Pam, but I don't believe this is the Squidster. Squidster's profile says he is lost in the wilderness of Walmart, this gus is quite clearly saying he is not lost.
  17. I think the bad are getting badder and the good are getting gooder. I think the middle ground is fast disappearing as people, by their ordinary, day to day actions, choose which side they are on.
  18. I find this to be a piece of music that generates strong feelings. I think its beautiful. By Tchaikovsky. You might need to be in the right frame of mind - peaceful and contemplative - to get the most enjoyment from it.
  19. I know its only a joke, but isn't this expressing a little too much confidence in engineers? :)
  20. You are well aware that this entire society in its present form would fall apart remarkably rapidly if people stopped paying other people to do things. I think there is a difference between someone who says I will pay my taxes and I'm happy if some of those taxes are used to pay people who accept some of the responsibility of protecting society, and another person who says I don't have to do anything, the government will look after me. My understanding was that you were saying that you don't see any difference between these two people, and I am saying to me, there is. We also think that another important component of our social system is a willingness to allow a diversity of viewpoints. If I think it is wrong to pull a trigger and take someone's life, that is my viewpoint. If someone else feels its ok to do that, that is his viewpoint. I do not expect him to live in accordance with my views and I'm not going to judge him for things that he might do that are inconsistent with my views. That is not hypocrisy, that is a willingness to accept alternative views.
  21. I think an important difference is that we pay for the protection we get from the professionals through our taxes so it is perfectly reasonable that we expect some form of protection from them.
  22. Another engineer! Welcome.
  23. It seems to me to be an odd situation when the solution to the problem of a man with a gun shooting at people is another man with a gun shooting at people. This is just an outsider's perspective from someone who does not live in the USA.
  24. Looking forward to your definition of the frying pam
  25. In Australia, I think the law says you cant' work longer than 5 hours without a break. I can't remember if the break has to be 30 or 45 minutes. I think if you are rostered to work a 12 hour shift your employer also has to pay you a meal allowance. It might depend on what kind of job you are talking about. For example, I don't think that forum administrators or moderators should ever have a break of any kind or of any duration. And as for the idea of any of them ever having a holiday, well that's just absurd! :)
