  1. That's a relief. I thought I was going to have to get anti-virus protection for my mouse pointer...
  2. I hope it was clear I was joking. It seems to me everyone likes their own music and dislikes something about other people's tastes in music. Now I'm pondering scrolling through my MP3 player to see what "guilty pleasures" might be in there.
  3. So are we supposed to post here the music we like that is of questionable taste, or are we supposed to post examples of "if you like this, you have questionable taste in music", or....? I have no examples of the former, because I only like good music; but I'm pretty sure I can come up with a few examples of the latter - I mean, there are whole decades to choose from...
  4. Answered in another instance of this post.
  5. I use Firefox and sometimes experience this delay. I just open the site in a new tab and continue browsing there while the "submit" processes it. This is my best recommendation - just let the other tab alone, no matter how long it takes. It's not because you're "new". As near as I can tell, this site is divided between multiple servers - at least one with the forums and another with users and rights. And, as near as I can tell, sometimes the one which handles users and rights goes down independent of the forum server, and then anything which requires login takes longer, or fails altogether. (That includes things like posting, viewing "unread" content, and private messaging, for example.)
  6. What, you don't want to deal with rounding and binary-to-decimal conversion when dealing with 7%?
  7. If by that, you mean doubt and faith exist in opposition to one another, then yes. If you mean a person must have doubt to have faith, then no (unless you mean they need to use faith to overcome the doubt, but that goes back to opposition). They are not compatible and cannot co-exist in a person on the same topic at the same time. Faith is to act in confidence. Doubt isn't. See Lectures on Faith, lecture 3 and question 12 from lecture 6: "...and where doubt and uncertainty are there faith is not, nor can it be."; also, the Topical Guide under "doubt". Doubt is not the opposite of knowledge, it's the opposite of belief.
  8. To answer the question more directly: we don't know. At least, I don't recall any scripture wherein the Lord says, "This is why I want 10% instead of some other percentage."
  9. That makes sense - directly from Abraham, we have Ishmael (not of the House of Israel, clearly). Then from Isaac we have Esau (again, obviously, not the House of Israel). Then Jacob (Israel) and the 12 tribes (plus Joseph's 2 sons and however that shakes out in tribe-counting). Add to that any unmentioned (by me or the Bible, whichever) sons and daughters Abraham had, and I think you have lots and lots of non-Jews, and non-House-of-Israels.
  10. With the exception of worship services (Sacrament Meeting (weekly, on Sunday); or temple work), it's almost impossible for Mormons to meet together without two things: 1) A 7pm start time 2) Food (desserts, usually)
  11. Exactly my point! I had a deal going on the side for Apricot Scrub commercials... <sigh>
  12. We coulda been rich! Rich, I tell you!
  13. I didn't read the whole article (no time for a few days), but the end makes me think that the author is suggesting that the leadership of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is de-emphasizing the doctrine that God was once a mortal man, in favor of the doctrine that man can become like God. I haven't observed any change in this regard. Of course we don't (never have in my lifetime) spend a lot of time on the idea that God was once mortal, because, well, what else is there to say? And of course we do spend a lot of time on the idea that we can become like God, because, well, that's the Plan of Salvation. At the end of the article, the author writes, "My own sense is that many in the LDS community, including several of its leaders, recognize that the first half of the Snow couplet, the statement about God having been like man, is incompatible with what they genuinely want to sing about: spiritual reliance on the all-sufficient Savior." ...but I don't see that happening, nor is God's previous mortality incompatible in any way with spiritual reliance on the Savior. FWIW.
  14. Hmm. Did someone spin the planet backward far enough that I've ended up back in grade school?
  15. Yeah, seriously folks, they're really boring; and he is - deeply flawed - as evidenced by him kicking me out of the compound! (That's a joke, for those who don't know.) IMO, we should encourage honesty in this regard more than we sometimes do. To know what you don't know is a powerful thing, if you let it motivate you to learn, to be teachable, to value and benefit from the knowledge of others, etc. When I was in college, my dad would always ask me, "What do you know?" Later, I discovered he was waiting for me to answer, "Less than yesterday." Because when you really start learning, one of the things which you learn is how much you don't know (and each significant new thing you learn reveals a multitude more things you don't know, but didn't previously know you didn't know). (Did that make any sense?)
  16. And just what is it that a Carborendum does after an accidental OJ & vodka? Inquiring minds want to know. Was there a video of this event?
  17. @pam, apparently we need a new forum named "parking lot"...
  18. Did you hie to Kolob? In the twinkling of an eye? Meanwhile, I'm glad you are both here - the world is indeed better for it.
  19. The "war chapters" in various parts of the Book of Mormon are fabulous. The more I read the scriptures, the better the stories get (regardless of the volume - though the D&C is lagging a little behind in the story department).
  20. Where are they? I'll beat them over the head with a paperback copy!
  21. @amwill, if you have been called, sustained, and set apart, you have the right to receive revelation on this matter (so long as you are worthy and put forth the required effort). If you haven't been set apart, get set apart. That is the best advice I can give you, as I have no other experience that I think would help in this situation. Perhaps others can make suggestions, and you can take these to the Lord, but whatever else is true, God knows what these girls need right now - if He isn't guiding you in a specific direction, that in itself may be guidance...
  22. I don't understand the "and is not good himself" part of the question. Are you thinking "know good and evil" is the same as "do good and evil" or "experience good and evil" or...? (Not saying any of those are wrong, just trying to understand this part of the question.) God is omniscient (he knows everything). And he is also perfect, so of course he is "good" - if I understand what you mean by that. IMO, this verse is saying that Adam and Eve gained an understanding which they didn't have previously: namely, they learned that both good and evil exist, and to tell the difference between good and evil. This understanding is something God has (hence, "the man is become as one of us").
  23. I would double-like that, if I could. Last night, as I was falling asleep, I was wondering if guys don't come out of action movies feeling 2" tall, too - cuz no one is the hero from modern action movies - not even the actor or stunt men or CGI experts (especially not the CGI experts). It also hit me: What sort of person compares anyone to a character from fiction!? It's fiction! If you can't use it for the intended purpose (temporary pleasure), or if it makes you unhappy with your own life, then you should stay away from it - because thinking reality can be like fiction is deluded. And this is coming from a person who self-describes as "fictionally dysfunctional" - meaning, if I could, I'd do little more than read fiction - but I've never compared real-life people to fictional people - that would ruin the fiction. Rhetorical, off-topic question of the day: Why are some non-words "dis..." and others "dys..."? Perhaps the cosmos is mocking the spellingly challenged...
