    Book Collecting

I have lived in Oregon, Arizona, and Washington state, and I found LDS books (by LDS authors &/or published by TCOJCOLDS) at St. Vincent DePaul & Savers. Rather than look just for a *Book* store, either used or new or both, look for Thrift Stores. Also get your self a library card, register on-line with your library and when they have book sales - go to them. Savers aka Value Village, Salvation Army, St. Vincent DePaul, etc. , and I have found some true gems at the local Humane Societies thrift stores.

    Book Collecting

I read a vast array of books. There are a few authors I will not read, but pretty much anything goes. After my separation from 1st hubby I lucked onto a great sale at Staples and at the St. Vincent's in purchasing book cases. The house I was living in had two living rooms - I used the smaller one as my *working* room. My computer, my electric organ (which I didn't have a clue how to play), my sewing machine (which I do know how to *play*) and all of the book cases. Lined up like in a library. Back to back in the middle of the room. Plus I had bookcases in the main living room - All of the books I had read, and had to put into boxes in my closets, now had a real home. Three years later when I married husband #2, I packed up all of the books (paper backs and hard backs) into 24 boxes. The paper backs into bankers boxes, the hard backs into apple, orange, etc. boxes w/lids. When I unpacked in hubby's home in a different state - 2/3 of my books didn't make it into the U-Haul. In the new state I bought books from the thrift stores and new books from the retail stores. Even bought through Amazon.com. 2nd Hubby's home was 1/3 the size of the one I left - so alas, my books remained in boxes. My new books are stored in plastic totes w/ lids and no access for bugs. Scorpions, gecko's and spiders LOVE to live in & amongst books. 24 of the 25 gallon totes. 6 years later we move back to my old town. I buy bookcases again, so my books have a home. BUT even though this house is 3x bigger - there are way more windows taking up the wall space. I have the books displayed - and I realized that I just couldn't buy anymore books. So Hubby gave me a Kindle for my birthday. When I see a book that interests me at the store, I make note of it, then buy it via Amazon. I have over 280 books on my Kindle that I have yet to read, and I have no idea how many are archived. I have room for two more tall bookshelves in my living room - I know that I will never stop buying printed books - turn me loose in the St. Vincent DePaul south of here, and I could easily end up buying 10 or 50 books. They have THE best selection of used books for the best price. Hard backs are $1.00, paper backs are $0.25. Very used paper backs are 3 for $0.25.
  3. Dr T - He who has a hate/love relationship with felines! So glad KitKat is taking care of the orphans. Gwen, often feral kittens are standoffish. I have two rescued, feral kittens. Brother & Sister, I named Fred and Ethel Mertz. Fred was the runt and barely weighed 7 oz. Ethel weighed in at 1 pound 2 ounces. To start with, they were removed from their mother way too soon. Ethel was a bully - a fighter and she was more than determined to live. Fred wasn't able to eat the kitten chow. I softened it with water and Ethel wouldn't let him eat. After three days of this, I took them both to the Vet. Took me an hour to corner Ethel and I carry a scar on my palm from her bite! Fred had lost weight - DUH! 3 oz. Ethel had gained 4 ounces. So I fed Fred Gerber's in the jar strained turkey mixed with human baby Rice cereal. One of the sisters in Primary with me had a baby - just started eating cereal and she gave me a Glad 1/4 C. container of the cereal. I mixed it with cat milk I got from the Vet. Then later on, I used heavy cream. The more fat in the cow milk, the easier it is for cats to digest. Any way - 10 years later - both are healthy, thriving and Ethel won't come near you unless you are going to give her Cat Treats, yet Fred is the cuddler, sleep on/near you. His nickname is:The Fabulous, Furry, Fuzznuts, Flip-Flopping, Feline Fred. You can not be standing and have Fred come near you. But sit down or lay down and he is right there. He head butts you, then flip-flops onto you. The reason I believe he is so much the lover is because I took one of my shawl-scarves and he lived in that around my neck and upper torso. Because I was afraid he would suffocate sleeping next to me in bed, I put him in a soft, pliable basket that had yet another of my cotton scarfs that I wore in it. Ethel slept there with him too. I believe that had I persisted in holding, snuggling and hand feeding, she would be just as cuddly as her brother Fred.
  4. Want to know a bit about a prospective city - go online to the grocery stores in the area. Get the zip code, then check out their grocery ads. Also see if they have a local newspaper online. Quite often they will let you read it for free for about a week. Check out their Homes for Rent, Homes for Sale and current news. I read their court happenings. What crimes had been committed. That will give you an idea of the *cost of living*, crime rate and how the judges rule. I live on the Central Oregon Coast - when husband and I go to the Temple, we go on Friday, spend the night at a motel just down the street and visit the Temple on Saturday. We then spend Saturday night there too and check out on Sunday. We got lost trying to find the local Ward, so we just headed home. Everyone we came in contact with (motel employees, grocery store, WinCo, restaurants, gas station, etc.) were very friendly and helpful. BUT in my opinion that is the norm for the Pacific Northwest. I was raised in Seattle - same - it is the Pacific Northwest. My husband was born in California, raised in AZ - Casa Grande, and he prefers the people from the Pacific Northwest. Believes them to be friendlier, less judgmental, way more helpful without looking for instant payment. You can also go to: Lake Oswego, Oregon (OR 97034, 97035) profile: population, maps, real estate, averages, homes, statistics, relocation, travel, jobs, hospitals, schools, crime, moving, houses, news Want to check out the other cities on your list, scroll down a bit till you see the box on the left that has a City, County, or Zip Code in it. Type in the city and click on search. Do a search for Realtors by googeling : realtors, city, state. The cost of the homes will give you an idea of the *wealth* of the area also.
  5. This happened to Husband and myself too. Our 1st Bishop got distracted by his business and personal life and neglected his Bishop duties. The next Bishop had a lot of *undoing* and *catching up* to do. From the date when we first filled out the forms to the date the First Presidency granted the sealing clearance between Husband and his previous wife (who by the way had voluntarily left the church and was extremely eager to rid herself of ALL things Mormon) it was 19 months later that we were finally sealed together. Keep asking your Bishop if he has an update - but be nice about it. He turns it in to the Stake President, and the Stake President turns it in to the 1st Presidency. We were told that the 1st Presidency only deals with this type of thing during a few months together out of a year. When the clearance comes, you only have ONE (1) month to get to the Temple. SO if you are not already endowed - get on it and do so. We wanted to get sealed in August - on our civil wedding date - well the approval came the first week of May. We were sealed the middle of May. BOTH of us already had our endowments so we didn't have to scramble to get those. From my life in the Church - baptized at 14 and am now 61 - patience is just one of the things that is a constant recurring theme. Learn patience and learn it well - because it is a virtue you absolutely need to perfect. I have not perfected it 100% - more like 60% so I still have a lot of learning, practicing and perfecting to do.
  6. I was 50 when I got mine. By the way, the Stake Patriarch is the one who gives the blessing. You need to go to your Bishop and get a recommend for it, then set up an appointment with your Patriarch. No matter what your age, the blessing IS of real vital importance. It is a personal letter to you and only you from Heavenly Father.
  7. Contact your Family History center and have them find out what proxy work you need to do. My husbands biological grandfather never married his grandmother - they had one son (husbands father). We just did the proxy work for all of them. Got Bio Grandfather baptized, confirmation, initiatory, endowment, and sealed to Grandmother (did her work at the same time) and son sealed to both. We have to wait for permission to do the proxy work for Grandmothers 1st, 2nd husbands and last encounter which also resulted in birth of a son. The children and grandchildren from those relationships are not ready to give the okay for us Mormons to do this work. Also did all the work for Husbands father - got him sealed to Husbands mother (even though they were divorced in mortal life, neither remarried before they passed), then the next step is Hubby gets sealed to his parents. I am soooooo looking forward to being proxy for his mother!!
  8. When my little brother and his wife divorced- he got the kids (3 boys and a daughter) every other week-end. They went to church every Sunday. Their records are in Mom's ward. They thought they had the best set up. In Primary they had two celebrations of birthdays, participated in two Primary Presentations at Sacrament. Same theme, but totally different presentation. The eldest went on a mission in 2008 - the youngest just graduated from high school. The next to the eldest is waiting for his mission call. In our branch we have a mother of three who is the daughter of very active parents. Her husband is of a different faith - in which he is very active. They had agreed that the children would not be baptized into any faith until they were 10 and then they would choose for themselves. They alternated attending church. Well, husband didn't play fairly. When he took them to church he dissed the LDS church. When the two older boys turned 10, Dad would not agree to baptism. At this time, he and his wife were still married. About two months ago, all three children got baptized. The oldest just graduated from high school this year, the youngest is 11. They hadn't been coming to church on alternate Sundays because Dad would get moody and be unpleasant. He and his wife recently divorced. She and her children have been coming steadily since their baptism's. It was the children's choice to get baptized and to attend on a regular basis. What I find totally amazing is that the children have not once dissed their Dad's faith, or him for that matter. They just don't visit him on Sundays. Actually the three of them visit Grandma & Grandpa on Sundays. Mom meets them at Church and after - they all go to the Grands for brunch & dinner. What I don't understand is that your husband's children are sealed to Mom and their step-father. Wasn't your husband and the mother of his children sealed together? It amazes me that the Church agreed to allow the children to be sealed to a non-biological parent when the birth father is alive and active in church! Has he given up his parental rights legally as well?
  9. To me it is in the same category as women who color their hair too dark of a color, and wear too much AND too dark of makeup. Accept how God has made you, and do so proudly as a child of God. I accepted the fact that as I aged, my coloring was softening rather than fading. Also as I was *softening* my hair went from Battle Ship dull gray to soft silvery gray mixed with white. Plus the makeup companies do not make light gray eyebrow pencils or mascara.
  10. In the past when I was a bartender, the place I worked had windows overlooking the parking lot. If a mother came into the establishment I refused to serve her. Take the kids to a babysitter, then come back. I then called the other bars & taverns in town to alert them that Ms. So & So was out with the kiddos and wanting to drink. They refused her service too. Why? Because months earlier another mother left her baby in the car while she proceeded to drink. She went to every place in town (total of 6) Just before heading home her last stop was the Liquor Store, she downed the pint of hard booze before she even got two blocks away. On her way home she crashed the car, killing the baby. She and her husband sued the last establishment she went into for continuing to serve her until she was too drunk to drive. They lost because they named the liquor store. Since it is State run, they can't be sued. No matter the weather, if a mother came into my bar, I went to the door looking for her car. If there were kids in it- then she was given a choice. Leave and go home or stay and wait for the cops I would be calling. They all chose to leave. If the car with children in it is in front of a bar or restaurant that has a lounge in it, I will go into the place and see if mommy &/or Daddy are drinking. If they are visible intoxicated I call the cops. When I lived in AZ, if there were children and/or animals in a car I called the cops. Not 911 - but the non-emergency number. Only once did I call 911 and that was because the 4 toddlers in the car had extremely red faces and didn't respond when I pounded on the window. It was 90 out (not quite winter yet) but it was hot as Hades INSIDE that car.
  11. Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes. Hubby and I went to the afternoon showing of the new Star Trek movie. Pretty good. Then we were going to go to Georgie's Beachside Grill Restaurants Newport Oregon | Seafood - American | Best Top Rated But the motel next door was spray painting the outside of their building (3 stories high), the wind was really blowing, and their painters were covering cars in the parking lots with plastic. No Way was I going to have that plastic blowing all over my car, scratching it. So we went to Yummy Bowl Yummy Bowl, Newport - Restaurant Reviews - TripAdvisor instead. Paid a lot less for a lot more food. Though I didn't get the chocolate dessert I love at Georgie's. Had vanilla ice cream w/ chocolate syrup and Classic Coke at home.
  12. Perfect for 1/2 Norwegian Gal, living on the Central Oregon Coast in the Paradise called The Pacific Northwest! Thank you Slamjet.
  13. Is your husband and active, endowed member of the church? Personally I think it is inappropriate. I was married for 28 years to a non-member, and I was inactive and not endowed. He relied on all things visual to set the mood for intimacy. XXX movies, xxx mags, flimsy lingerie and revealing outer clothes did nothing for me. I felt like a prostitute being paraded around. If any man looked at me, my husband got angry, and took it out on me. We are divorced and I am now married to a LDS man, we are active and endowed. We are eternal companions. Our garments are not a deterrent to how we see and react to each other. From grade school on, I have always preferred modest clothing. It was only after marrying my first husband and his insistence that I dress in revealing clothes that I did. Within the confines of our home - we dress and do as is comfortable for us. When our curtains are open, we are fully clothed. When they are closed, then we get comfortable. When you were endowed, you willingly made a covenant with God, to always wear your garments, 24/7. With the exceptions of: Bathing, swimming, being intimate with your spouse, giving birth for women, undergoing surgery. I do not recall the Temple Matron adding wearing sexier lingerie thus also wearing sexier more revealing outer clothing when you go out on a formal date with husband, when she had her talk/council with us prior to receiving our initiatory and endowment. That is my two cents worth.
  14. I have the 2007 version. Thanks - that did the job!! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.
  15. Mailing Address???
  16. I have struggled for three weeks with this problem. In my Word program, I start a blank document. First I set the margins, then type in the first paragraph. Hit Enter and the cursor goes clear to the bottom of the page! What is with that?? I have gone on-line to Microsoft Office and read, and read, and read. I have done the Help in Word till my head throbs and my nose wants to bleed! HELP - can someone please tell me how to fix this??? To get anything done (I write a lot of letters and am doing outlines for presentations in Relief Society for this coming evening meeting, and for the Branch Presidency regarding the library) I have been using a letter I saved as Blank Document - deleting the letter and then doing the work that I need to do. BUT it is a royal pain in the sitter-downer.
  17. Yeah - saw this on FB and I repeat what I said there - So wish Hubby and I could be there in person to support you. Also want to add - Way to go!
  18. Yet another Have a situation with the owner of the Mobil Home park where I live. We own the house and rent the lot. The *landlord* pays for the water. There are only 11 homes here, and my home is the newest (1993). The landlord hadn't deposited the lot rent checks for 4 months. I pay via ePay. The money comes out of my account. The checks are only good for 90 days. If it isn't deposited/cashed within that time, the bank voids the check and deposits the money back into my account. That is how I found out he hadn't deposited my checks. My account showed a deposit I hadn't made. I went to the neighbors and asked if their checks had been cashed. Turns out he hadn't cashed all of ours. One other neighbor pays via ePay also, two elderly couples pay via Money Orders and two younger couples pay with MO, the rest pay by personal check. All of us have not received a receipt for 9 months to a years worth of rent checks. I called him on the phone, and he told me he was waiting for one more check to come in before he went to the bank. Three weeks later, he still hadn't deposited them, so I called him again. He said the same thing. I told him that checks have an expiration date. Some were void after 90 days, some after 180 days. I lied and told him that Money Orders voided after 90 days (I have no idea when they really do, but I know that 4 of the renters pay with MO.) Three days later, Hubby sees him scrambling around inside of his pickup - going through all of the papers, food containers, trash. Every day after that for a week I check my account. Finally - he deposits the checks. He only sends receipts AFTER he deposits the checks. I changed the mailing address of his ePay check. It now comes to me, I take it to him and wait on his doorstep for the receipt. Ticks him off, but I really don't care. I went through all of my receipts from him and I am missing an entire years worth. This man is 58 years old, and he doesn't deposit $8,400.00 worth of rent checks?? I got a glimpse of inside his house - he is a hoarder! There is paper, unopened mail & UPS and FedEX deliveries, shopping bags of items that are waist high! The spider webs in his windows are so thick that they look like curtains. Two of my checks hit 90 days, so he is out $600.00. IF he decides to ask for new checks to cover them, I am not writing him replacement checks until I have the voided checks, AND it will be ePay and not personal checks. At first we all thought that maybe he had caught the nasty flu bug that went around. Hubby and I were down with it for nearly a month! But after seeing the mess in his house - I am wondering if he is senile?? I knew this man when I lived here before Hubby and I married. He was neat as a pin, his Mother complained that he was a neat freak and she couldn't stand to have him around. He would take her coffee cup and wash it before she was even through with it. She was so happy when he finally moved into his own home. There isn't much we can do. His siblings live down the street from him, but they haven't talked since his father passed away 15 years ago. Perhaps when the grass gets so high you can't see the house, they just may go knock on his door. IF they can get to it through all of the forgotten groceries in bags, unopened bulk mail and UPS deliveries and the bags and bags of house hold items left there in the enclosed porch. I saw Wal Mart bags with towels, laundry soap, new clothes hangers.
  19. The hard part is the giving advice. Don't. Give generously of comfort. Like the little boy who went to the elderly neighbor who had just lost his wife. When his mother asked what he did. He said: I cried with him. Eowyn, from reading your posts I have surmised that you are a true nurturer. You seek to nurture not only your own family, but those that you love and care about. Nurture your friend, give her comfort, cry with her. Yell with her. Slam cupboard doors with her (that is my favorite release for frustrated anger, that and throwing canned food at the tree in the back yard.) Just don't give advice. (FYI the tree is okay, but the fence is in dire need of repair!)
  20. Why do husbands leave the empty box of crackers, cereal, etc. in the cupboard? Are they all allergic to the garbage/trash/recycling bins? Milk, juice in the fridge? Empty TP roll in bathroom? Tiny sliver of soap, bottle of shampoo, mouthwash, totally exhausted tube of toothpaste in the bathroom?
  21. Why does the power go out when you are in the shower?
  22. Why is it that when you finally buy an item you have wanted for a long time, thinking you are getting a good deal on it- it goes on sale 4 days later for half the price you just paid? Most stores have a 3 day rule. If an item sells for less in their store within 3 days of you purchasing it at the higher price, they will refund you the difference.
  23. The mother needs to have a temple recommend. All of the work needs to be done for the deceased father. I think that the girl doesn't need to have her endowments. Children of all ages are sealed to parents. My little sisters children were sealed to her and hubby when they were 2 yrs up to 9 yrs old. Sister and Hubby were endowed and then sealed together and to the children.
  24. I prefer to give talks at Church. I am a bit nervous - afraid I won't be heard. Our PA system is the A B S O L U T E P I T S. Now that I have new full upper dentures, I am afraid I will whistle too much, listhpth too often or heaven forbid- have them slip around. I am not able to just make a few notes then speak for 15 to 30 minutes, AND stay on topic. So I write out the entire talk and read from it, and I need a minimum of two weeks to prepare a talk. Prayers, on the other hand are impossible for me to do publicly. When called on at the time, I do it ~ but I am shaking, sweating and barely speak above a whisper. Matter of fact, I will be giving a talk on Mother's Day. Forgot to ask how much time they want me to use. Only know that there will be a youth speaker - so sent out an email asking if there will just be the two of us, and how much time.
  25. You can also go to the local law enforcement and ask as well, and the newspaper(s). When my girlfriend was looking for a house in the greater Seattle area, she went to the Sheriffs office and asked what area had the highest crime rate.
