  1. From Wikipeadia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slider_(sandwich) To me it is labor intensive and not worth the hassle. When I was growing up, Mom baked bread every Monday. She did a huge pan of dinner rolls for Monday dinner. These were not small, delicate rolls. They were good sized ones. For lunches on Tuesday we took two of these rolls, cut in slices to make two small sandwiches each. Or in other words we took 4 small sandwiches for lunch. We never had sliced bologna, or any other sliced luncheon meat. Mom took left over meat from the previous dinner and ground it up with dill pickles, celery, onions and a few soda crackers to clean out the grinder of the foods. Mix it all together with Miracle Whip, a bit of mustard and in the case of roast beef some horseradish. We also NEVER took P &J sandwiches to school either.
  2. Buying shoes from a thrift store or garage sale, make sure you CLEAN them and disinfect the inside. Even children get athletes feet!! I wear Crocs now. Wish I had worn them when I was younger- my feet hurt me all the time! I would put her in Croc's - measure her foot according to their directions, then purchase the shoes. I only order online, and I have never had to send any back. I love them!!!
  3. Amen to that. I agree 100% with LiterateParakeet - and wish to add one other statement. Once that is done, I would then let it go and let Father, through His Priesthood here on earth, handle it.
  4. What I got was some pretty nasty postings about Romney and Mormons. I was really shocked because I never expected that from the two women who posted them. I asked them privately why the nasty attack on me, my faith and on Romney? They both were extremely nasty in their reply- evil nasty! So I un-friended them. Another woman has upped the amount of posts that are pro-Christ. If you really love Christ you will "like" AND "share" this. If you ignore, then you are going to go to ####. I dislike those kinds of threatening emails and I really dislike it on FB - so she is un-friended also. I blocked and bounced her years ago from my emails. I saw one of the women in the Post Office the other morning. She was waiting to mail something and I was picking up my medications. She actually called me a F(bomb) Bee-otch. The Postmaster told her to cease with the vulgarity and get out. She spit at my feet as she left. Whoa! She knew I was LDS when I first met her ages ago ~ so why the venom now?? Believe me, when I see her car coming, I am getting off the road and out of her way.
  5. Yes. Everything for women can easily be machine washed on delicate and hand wash of the ceremonial items. My husbands white pants I took to the dry cleaners. Every thing else of his I hand washed.
  6. The sash & ceremonial items. Had it happen to me. No way am I ever going to iron rayon or nylon. Hang it up overnight and the few wrinkles will disappear.
  7. In Oregon renewal is $40.00, new license is $60.00.
  8. Is that why your and Elowyn's avatar's are missing?
  9. Also, one thing that I did this past winter ~ actually starting last April ~ was to sprout seeds and beans. Fresh vegetables affected me in a rather unpleasant way ~ rather than hunt down local organically grown foods ~ I chose to sprout seeds. (extremely painful gut w/diarrhea) GMO foods cannot reproduce - thus the seeds and beans for sprouting I was using are not GMO, and they do NOT affect me unpleasantly. I went on-line to get my sprouting trays (no one had them locally), and bought a starter kit at the same time. Since then I get 90% of my seeds from the bulk section at Fred Meyers. Dry beans: pinto, kidney, navy, great northern, etc. have to be cooked for your body to digest them. When sprouted, they increase their nutrition and decrease their flatulence dramatically. Rinse till water runs clear, soak overnight. Drain (use this first drain water to water your outside plants), rinse once more, drain and let sit another 24 hours. Can either let sit on counter top or in the fridge. Now you can cook them. This simple act of letting them sit an additional 24 hours nearly quadruples their nutrition value. Sprouted seeds are also more nutritious than lettuces from the store. I quit eating Iceberg lettuce almost 10 years ago. I do like leafy lettuce (red & green) & romaine - but can not afford the 100% organic prices. If you are reluctant to sprout seeds go to SproutPeople, The Grooviest Sprouting Seeds on Our Planet! and read, read, read. They explain pretty much everything about the seed: how to store, sprout, & eat. They offer recipes too! I don't like their sprouting kits, so I got mine from WheatGrass Kits Kitchen Crop Seed Sprouter by Victorio . Bought two and have them in use constantly. My husband who really does not like salads - iceberg lettuce mostly, plus butter lettuce loves the sprouts! I thought he would turn away Mung Beans- but he likes them. I also sprout Lentils- until they have a bit longer "tail". You can then eat them raw or cook them. I thought I was going to have to whirl them up in my NurtiBullet - but Hubby likes them raw or cooked. He likes garbanzos sprouted raw and cooked. I put garbanzo and lentils in his favorite homemade Spicy Mexican Chicken Tomato soup, along with celery, green & red bell peppers. He also prefers spinach, fresh. I would love to be able to afford onion, broccoli & cabbage seeds (average $25.00 a pound!) Granted that pound would be a years supply or more! I got black & yellow mustard seeds at Fred Meyer in their bulk section. Only bought two tablespoons worth- and then brought them home and sprouted them. Yep, they sprouted - so they are Non GMO- and the averaged cost is $6.19 a pound. The next shopping trip I bought a pound of each. I sprout them, and I also use them as a spice ~ whole &/or ground. All of their seeds & beans I tested out first to make sure they sprouted, then I went and bought a pound or more. Sometime this year I will buy in greater quantities and vacuum seal for my long term storage. Another product that is a must for your home, is local honey. Honey is not only a sweetener, but it is also an analgesic, antiseptic and if you have asthma, allergies to pollen, and eat the local honey it acts as an immune booster. I have used honey on steam burns, bug bites (other than mosquitoes) and abrasions. Healed faster than when I used over the counter antibiotic salves. Store bought honey does not work. I have run out of my local honey (12 years ago I got a 5 gallon bucket for $5.00. The bee grower & his extended family are members of our Branch (inactive unfortunately - but still friendly to their HT & VT). The honey from EE is local to Utah honey. That is great for those who live in the area - not so great for me here in Oregon. It is better than the store bought- as the pollen is still in it. I have read Mirky's preparedness link - wonderful, most useful information. A must read!
  10. We have sufficient short term storage right now - about 6 months worth - with the exception of water. I took $700.00 and bought from Emergency Essentials long term storage: a pail of wheat. #10 cans of freeze dried: asparagus pieces, sweet corn, onion dices, celery dices, Asian flavored white chicken pieces, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Montery Jack Cheese, shredded Colby Cheese Mushroom slices, Green Pepper dices, chopped spinach, tomato chunks. Dehydrated carrot dices, minced garlic, butter powder, orange drink mix, Vegetarian Beef Broth & Vegetarian chicken broth. Apple Cinnamon muffin mix, honey cornbread mix, chocolate fudge brownie mix, split green peas, yellow popcorn, SAF Premium yeast 1 lb, & quick oats. I won't be buying the muffin mixs, brownie mix, asparagus, pinto beans, split green peas. They are too costly through EE. Jiffy brand muffin mixes are $0.68 at Fred Meyer- BUT they do have shortening in them, so you need to vacuum seal (keep the bugs out) and store in a cool, dry place. Marie Callender's envelope mixes of Corn bread in 7 & 16 oz. sizes are great for the price. MC envelope mixes of Fudge Brownies are great! 10 oz cost $1.00 at the Dollar Store, and the 16 oz. one I got on sale at Walmart for $1.98. I have about 6 pounds of Crisco in the cubes. So I use that as the shortening in the cookie, brownie & etc. mixes. The cheapest popcorn is at Cash & Carry. 12 pound bag for a little over $7.00. All of the dried beans are cheaper in bulk at Fred Meyer, then the next cheapest is bagged at Walmart, then Safeway. If you like Rice A Roni & Pasta Roni, get it on sale and vacuum seal. Just don't let the vacuum seal go till it automatically ends. Stop it as soon as the plastic forms the box. Also, the store brands are just as good as the name brand. Lipton Pasta and Rice sides are great - and they have a long shelf life. I just used some from 2006 - tasted fine. Walmart sells them for $0.98 each. Also sometimes Bi-Mart has them for $0.68 each ~ but you are limited to 6 or 8. I just take the first batch to the car, come back in and go through a different checker. Did this 5 times one day. I think they limit it so that Mom & Pop retail stores don't buy a case or six and then sell them for $1.79 each. I do need to buy the FD Hamburger. That will be for long term storage. Add that to the Lipton Pasta side and you have your own version of Hamburger Helper - especially if you add a can of green beans and use the liquid from the beans to reconstitute the evaporated milk that the pasta side needs. I plan on purchasing several (5 to 10 each) pails of Hard Red Wheat and Hard White Wheat from EE. They have the cleanest wheat and the price is comparable to the Church's wheat. Oh, Cash & Carry has the 1 pound brick of SAF Premium yeast for $1.25 cheaper than EE - and you don't have to pay for shipping! We eat a lot of stir fry meals. So I wanted to try out the FD vegetables. They are great. Just remember that you need to cook them a bit after you re-hydrate them. Also I save the extra liquid and freeze it for when I make soup or gravy. Oh and the dehydrated vegetables ~ put them in boiling water and COOK. Especially the carrots. The long term foods should be the same foods you eat now. Just know that certain foods don't have a very long shelf life. My short term has jars of cheese sauces (alfredo, etc.), tomato based sauces, all of which have only about a year shelf life. But for long term I have envelope mixes of the same. That is why I also have Butter Powder- to use with the Pasta Sides, etc. Cake/Muffin/Corn bread mixes in boxes are short term if they already have shortening in them. Canned tuna fish only has a 1 to 1.5 year shelf life. So rotate it. Jarred/canned Oysters, sardines & clams do not live past their use by date. But canned salmon does. I am still eating 2008 use by date salmon. Mayo & Miracle Whip really does die at the use by date (it is nasty!) - rotate it. If you have two jars of mayo and one is just opened and the other is at its use by date - use it to make chocolate cake! Chocolate Mayo Cake is fantastic! Use really close to expiring MWhip as a rub on chicken or turkey. I just add some herbs and spices and lather all over the turkey. Boy Howdy is ii good!
  11. Less smelly at least
  12. From the Handbook 2 21.1.17 Fast Day A proper fast day observance typically includes abstaining from food and drink for two consecutive meals in a 24-hour period, attending fast and testimony meeting, and giving a generous fast offering to help care for those in need.
  13. Unless it quiets down the 2 yr old when she is screaming "I wanna go play - I wanna go play".
  14. Ruthie, this is from lds.org : You need to talk with the Primary President regarding this. I don't see having only you and your daughter for FHE as a bad thing. It would be nice if her father sat in and listened- it would let her know that he supported her. But I don't see it as a failed situation. Talk with the Primary President, let her know your concerns, and have her clarify what exactly is expected.
  15. We have lived at our current address for two years now. When I bought the house, I went to City Hall to pay the taxes due on it and to register it. It is a manufactured home, thus in this county it has to be registered. They have it as Merten Dr. I am number 8. My husband goes by Yahoo Maps and uses Mertin #8. Well the UPS driver knows me, saw me in town and asked where, exactly do I live. She now knows and no matter what is on the parcel- if it has Hubby or my name on it- UPS gets it to us. During the holidays, FedEx has extra drivers. They also have a no signature policy. According to the email we got, they delivered our Christmas gift package to the house on the 21st. We thought that maybe they meant delivered to the Post Office (which FedEx does frequently). Nope not there. So on Christmas Eve- at 5 pm, Hubby called FedEx and asked which house our package got delivered too? What color was it and what number was on the front of the house. An hour later our across the street neighbor brings a package to our door, saying FedEx delivered it to the house up on the corner, which is #1. They held on to it- planning on bringing it to us after they got back from their Christmas day celebration. Hubby used Mertin. I got all bent out of shape and told him to cease and desist using Yahoo - Use Google maps backed up by the US Postal Service. Also - I showed him the tax papers ---- M E R T E N - - - Yahoo can go for a LONG walk off a short dock! Just as we were looking up FedEx's number ~ they called us back to report that the driver had delivered to the wrong house and it would be fixed by noon on Christmas! Told FedEx that the wrong house and brought us our package. Thanks! Hum, on Christmas? FedEx would have their driver go make the correction on Christmas? Cool. Our little Post Office officially closes at noon on Christmas eve, but the Post Master stays until around 9 PM - if you find a yellow slip in you box, you can knock on the window to the sorting room, and he will get you your package. I have lived here since 1978, with a break from 2004-2010, and it has always been this way. Love my little town.

  17. When I need a dose of Mom's from scratch home cooking comfort food, I make her "In The Oven" macaroni & cheese. Made with chunks of medium cheddar cheese, chopped onion, celery, real butter/flour/whole milk. She didn't melt the cheese, but let it melt as it cooked. Oh and the macaroni was only cooked for 5 minutes before combining together with the rest of the ingredients and then popped into the oven. Sometimes she would add chopped ham or spam or even left over chopped roast beef. I didn't care- as long as I didn't get served the crusty top. The crusty macaroni hurt the roof of my mouth, the same as corn flakes did. Oh, and her version of creamed veggies was to cook the canned veggies in the liquid from the can, then serve in small bowls at the table, then pour a few teaspoons of evaporated milk on top. Dad is the one who seasoned with salt & pepper if we asked for it. We weren't allowed to handle the salt & pepper until we were 14. Over salted foods is never good for anyone to eat, and no way could we afford to toss food out. I still like my veggies creamed that way, only now I use frozen or fresh veggies, and just add half n half, heavy whipping cream or whole milk. I save the evaporated milk when I need to add milk to boxed cheesy foods aka Pasta Sides. I had a school mate whose mother's claim to fame in her family was to make spaghetti sauce using cream of tomato soup - with no added water or milk or anything else. To me that was pretty much the same as canned spaghetti-O's. Ick!
  18. I use the store brand equivulant of Cheese Whiz to make my Mac & Cheese. I don't like elbow macaroni, get real tired of chasing those babies all over the plate. I use the corkscrew pasta instead. Two cups of uncooked pasta to 1/2 jar of cheese. Don't even have to add milk or butter. I love canned green beans and canned spinach (yes both) with Mac & Cheese, so I save the liquid from both & add more water to cook the pasta in. Sometimes I have canned beets & spinach - then cook the pasta in those liquids. Oh, yeah, I get the multi colored cork screw pasta. When I was challanged in RS to live for one day and two nights off of our food storage with only 3 gallons of water, I used the liquids from the canned veggies. The Mac & Cheese tasted pretty darn good with the pasta cooked in canned veggie liquids. With the beet juice, the water didn't look real good- but tasted good. Also used green bean liquid added to the water for instant mashed potatoes. Liked that better than using chicken broth.
  19. Pineapple horseradish sauce to go on the jello salad??? That is different.
  20. Creamed or scalloped potatoes, or steamed yams/sweet potatoes Steamed broccoli or asparagus or cauliflower (or combo of all) Hubby and I are going out to dinner. $21.00 per person, Baked Ham, Baron of Beef & Roasted Turkey (or combo of all three), Baked or mashed potato, glazed sweet potato, turkey stuffing w/gravy, and all you can eat salad bar. If you want more, you can have seconds. No extra charge. This restaurant has one of the best salad bars. I love their three bean salad; artichoke hearts in vinegrette; marinated mushrooms/olives/sweet bell peppers; as well as salad greens, green, bermuda. and yellow onions; grape tomatoes; cucumbers; bacon bits; ham dices; etc.; etc. For dessert there is pumpkin pie, mince pie, chocolate torte or small servings of all three.
  21. As someone who is concerned with her own health and well being, I don't consume any product with aspartame in it. Defeat Diabetes: Aspartame - The Silent Killer When my Dr and Diabetic Counselor tell me to avoid it like the plague, then I do. If it is bad for diabetics, then it is bad for everyone. It does the same to Mr Healthy as a Horse as it does to someone with diabetes. Get your kid vitamins he swallows rather than chews. Better yet, feed him a fully balanced diet, then the vitamins won't be needed.
  22. Dri-silque make worthless dust rags - Only had one pair that I needed to retire though. Mine are nearly 10 years old and still are looking good! I have had to go up a size (or two), but I just "hand them down" to my SIL who is endowed also, and who is smaller than me. Husbands cotton ones though they do get thin over time. Before we married he was using liquid bleach in the wash water (BIG NO NO) - so that yellowed them some. I cut out the backs of the tops and use them for rags. They are wonderful to use for hankies when I have a cold. Soft - oh so soft!

Bini, speaking from my own perspective - I don't like bath type stuff. I do have a garden tub and a bit bigger than the average tub/shower combo. But for the past 8 years I have not taken tub baths. The reason being is I can not easily get out of the tub ~ even with the handicap rails/aids that we have installed. I appreciate getting them ~ and I don't care what smells/aromas they come in. A few years ago I got a bath salts/lotions/etc. given to me that smelled like bubble gum. I used the lotions. All things for the tub, I gave to the YW leaders to add to the gift baskets they were putting together. My SIL (oldest brothers wife) gave me liquid body wash. I absolutely love the brand and smell. I use the hard bar soap in same brand and scent. BUT body wash is way to slippery for me to use. It gets under the suction bath mat and loosens it and I slide. It also requires way, way, way more water to rinse off, and it is nearly impossible to rinse and wash out of the wash cloth. I traded my neighbor for the hard bar soap. She gives me two bars for each bottle. It is a win-win gift. One year my girlfriend decided to have a "Let's Help Iggy" party. She decided that I needed to re-do my kitchen and bathroom. Everyone on the invite list was given a choice of items to give me. She is a lacy, girly-girl. So she suggested items she liked. I like lace, but not on everything. I also am not fond of ribbons everywhere either. I truly appreciated the party, seeing how she did it all long distant ~ my family and friends were spread out throughout the country! (WA, OR, SD, NMex., HI ~ she was in WA & I was in OR), and I used nearly everything I was given, after I had removed the excessive lace. I also agree with your husband. Don't redo the gift. She will use what she likes and appreciate the thought behind the giving of the gift. Also, if she doesn't like it, and makes not nice remarks about it ~ then cross her off your gift giving list. OR the next time, give her a gift certificate from Safeway, or Denny's or Trader Joe's.
  25. 26 is a bit old for an 18 year old. An 8 year difference in age is okay if the girl is 25 & older, and the guy is 33 & older. BTW, I was 20 when I met my 1st husband and he was 27 - from hindsight, I should have been looking for 20-23 yr olds. Are there no 18-22 year olds (both genders) in your Ward? I would go that route, before I would have a 26 yr old male entertain her. From FB, some of the LDS mothers in my realm of friends have been sharing is a teen FB page and basically it says ~ how cute, she is 14 and he is 18, that is not a relationship, that is babysitting.
