  1. My OP is meant more to address the "nones," who use the "I'm not religious" phrase to dismiss the topic.  Again, they certainly have the right.  Still, I hope to at least lead the horse to water.

If you really want to delve into an atheist or agnostic mindset I suggest that this board isn't a very good place for it. This board isn't really awash in atheists or agnostics and those who are here are mindful of the faith based nature of the board and thus are unlikely to engage with any boldness. This is a faith promoting board and an atheist or agnostic response to your questions aren't faith promoting. The Straight Dope Message Board, the Great Debates sub-forum, would be a wonderful place to get honest responses that aren't concerned with the nature of the board they are responding on and there are many atheists and agnostics there. There is also a fair number of religious individuals but the board does lean towards the atheist/agnostic as far as the membership numbers are concerned. If you wanted more neutral territory (as even I would classify the SDMB as being on the antagonistic side as far as religion is concerned) I bet with sufficient effort you could probably find a board with a more even split/neutral attitude to ask your question on.

  2. We've discussed it in those terms. He doesn't get it.

Do he not get your argument? Or does he not agree with it? Understanding and agreement are often conflated by people (on both sides of many an argument). That is not to say that lack of understanding is never the case, just that it's an easy and common conflation; particularly if passion is involved.

  3. I forget which apostle in recent times said that in regards to Joseph Smith using the seer stone in a hat ..."some of the truth is not neccesary" (not an exact quote but along those lines).

Your quote sounds like a reference to an address given by Boyd K. Packer entitled The Mantle is Far, Far, Greater Than the Intellect. Relevant quote below:

There is a temptation for the writer or the teacher of Church history to want to tell everything, whether it is worthy or faith promoting or not. Some things that are true are not very useful.
  4. I'm curious as to WHY you feel better about it?

Do you actually believe that someone bent on murder and mayhem is going to care one whit about a sign prohibiting firearms?

I find that generally when people feel better about the idea of a gun free environment it's because they fear someone doing something stupid with a (legally present) gun over someone intentionally, and illegally, bringing in a gun to cause murder and mayhem. One can of course debate if the weighting of fears is grounded in the statistics (fears being very subjective things it won't matter for some people), but no belief in signs preventing someone intent on murder and mayhem using a gun from entering the premises are required to feel as Bini does. Ultimately she'll have to explain her particular situation.

  5. Have you talked to him specifically about how you feel like he'd benefit from the occasional friends/guys night out? If he doesn't want to get out and about and it's not causing any problems (or stemming from them) I'd be inclined to just let him know that you're happy to support him if and/or when he gets an itch for a monthly (or what have you) evening of X with friends. If he's an introvert* then over encouraging him to get out there and jump in with friends where relationship dynamics may have changed significantly may make him feel pressured and a bit grumpy.

*That he had friends and went out regularly doesn't necessarily mean he's an extrovert. However, you know your husband better than anyone else here on the board.

  6. What do you like about unions and why do we need them.  What do you dislike about unions and why do we need to get rid of them.

At it's heart a union is the freedom of association and the right to control your own labor (aka if you're going to work or not). I'm disinclined to pass laws preventing people from associating with other individuals in their field (or even workplace) and telling them they can't quit en mass (we seem to have no problems letting employees cut people loose en mass).

Now where today's unions go past this conceptual nugget is where they have legal protections that essentially change the balance between employer and employees and change it to employer versus employees + government, I think lively and healthy debate can be had about those legal protections and advantages and if they should be eliminated. I can even see lively and healthy debate over if a particular union is doing more harm than good for it's members. I find generally speaking people hone in on those last two subjects, but they are somewhat different than discussing if unions themselves should be allowed.

Or what would it take for you to want to join a union?

It would take what they offer, short-term and long-term, to be equal to or greater than the investment (monetary and time) they would require of me. In short, they must offer a net value.
  7. Did you know that English is a very compact language?  That when this World-wide Church tries to present the Endowment in other languages while keeping of the pacing of the old endowment movies... They were very rushed (depending on the language) Thus by slowing down the pacing in English (and filling the gaps with acting) they can better accommodate other languages.  So that Saint's in other countries can have a less rushed experience...

English doesn't necessarily need to be particularly compact. Translations often take more space/time than the original. Even skilled translators can find themselves having to take a two or three word idiom and turn it into a sentence to properly communicate the meaning fully in another language. Also consider if you want to do a standard video that it needs to account for the translation that takes the longest for each particular scene. If German needs an extra 5 seconds for a scene, Spanish an extra 23 seconds , and Norwegian an extra 13 seconds it doesn't really mater if the audio is actually shorter in Japanese ( compared to English ), the scene needs to give room for the 23 seconds extra needed by the Spanish audio.

  8. I don't hesitate to "judge" the payment of clergy as priestcraft.  Can you imagine John the Baptist sending Jesus an invoice for his baptism?

    River fees: 4 silver

    Camel hair rental: 2 silver

Locust and honey reception: 3 silver

Recording fees: 1 silver per gospel

What are your thoughts on stipends for clergy?

  9. According the Mayor:

First, houses of worship and not-for-profit 501c3 organizations are, and always will, be exempt," Triolo said. "The only item they always have been obligated to ensure is the public safety and compliance of the use and occupancy laws. These issues include proper ingress/egress, fire safety, ADA  and other related items.

Unfortunately, our city sustainability department, in an effort to reduce costs and streamline noticing, consolidated multiple forms into one, but left the title of "business license" on top, which was confusing to many. This incident is truly an unfortunate misunderstanding that I hope will be resolved soon.

Going to the Lake Worth Municipal website does appear to have it set-up as a dual form, at least it does mention Use & Occupancy ( https://www.lakeworth.org/business/business-tax/ ). That might explain some church seeing the form and complaining but it doesn't really explain the investigation. Even if it was intended to be an investigation into if safety and maximum occupancy requirements were being met the snippets of the report available online don't make it sound like that at all. Which makes it sound like someone or someones decided to do a little axe grinding.

As far as the general question instead of the specific incident:

I'm comfortable with for profit business ventures of churches requiring a license if a secular one would as well, but I'm not comfortable with requiring some sort of church license (be it a unique to churches license or requiring them to get a business license). I am okay with buildings that hold large regular public to semi-public meetings being required to meet certain safety requirements such as maximum occupancy and sufficient points of egress in case of emergency. That'd be something that applies to the building though not the church itself.
  10.

I guess I just wanted some ladies on the board to empathize with, and relate to, as I know that I am not alone in PMS. Right?

Generally speaking any information extraneous to your intent (a thread where people empathize/sympathize about PMS) will result in some manner of thread derailment/tangent. Particularly if that extraneous information is about relationship issues and it's put in the relationship advice forum.

  11.

the references you are getting on social media may not be "judgemental" at all but a sincere concern for your welfare. Graciously thank them for thinking of you and continue to love them.

Does that cut both ways? If Bini posted materials and comments intended to lead her friends and family away from Christianity, because she's concerned about the welfare of those who believe in something she believes is false, would your advice be the same? That they should graciously thank her for thinking of them?

If yes, I commend you on your consistency. A lot of people aren't so consistent (on either side of things).

  12. I don't understand . . . I guess if they are sending things in a nasty way stteo "you dolt, don't you know blah, blah, blah", then sure they are being rude.  But if they are sending it in a polite way, maybe they feel that you would benefit from xyz and are trying to help.  Sure, their help isn't wanted or needed. . . but is that really rude?

    Two things come to mind:

    1) If she's expressed that she doesn't wish to discuss certain topics on her social media, email, or what have you and people who are aware of such keep bringing the issue up then it's generally regarded as rude be the topic god or The Hobbit.

    2) Phrasing of messages can be a lot more subtle than straight up calling someone a dolt. For an example, talking to a believer in god about their 'delusion' is part of a disrespectful tone even though it's not straight up calling them a dolt.

That said, sometimes when we make transitions (I'm speaking generically) in life it prompts people to comment and if we're talking social media (or we have a wide social circle) it can feel like a coordinated assault and we lose track over who we've had conversations with explaining that we don't wish to discuss the topic or the rude comments of one portion of the people we know subconsciously taint the innocent and well meaning comments of the rest.

  13. I wish I was an early riser......but I am not. I wake up early, but drift back to sleep and am usually forcing myself up at 7:30.

I find that it helps a lot if the first thing I do is hop out of bed and take a shower as soon as the alarm goes off. If I try to do the snooze thing, or if I just tell myself that I'll wait a minute or two before getting out from under the covers I'm likely to reconsider my decision to get up if I'm at all able. Showering first thing gives me both an immediate goal and helps wake me up.

I like going to sleep at 5:30 a.m....

There was a time in my life that I was going to bed at 10 and getting up at 6. That would be 10 am and 6 pm, maybe it's just growing up in a large family but my enjoyment of the stillness of the night has stuck with me. Baring responsibility driven reasons I think I'm always going to tend towards being a night owl (though not that extreme). I don't struggle too much (though that might change with age) in forcing myself to get up so when I need to adjust my schedule I just get up early and let being tired adjust when I'm going to bed. If I try and force my wake-up time by going to bed early I just end up laying awake in bed until my customary time.

  14. That is just label that is attached to any activity that results in the death of an animal in the UK, even fishing is classed as a blood sport in the UK.

Yet the use of the term remains needlessly emotive when referencing people hunting to put food on the table.

  15. I guess that's another area that the UK and the US differs on, hunting.  Bloodsports (other than fishing) are seen as brutal and inhumane to animals in the UK.

If we're talking trophy hunting I'm inclined to agree, if we're talking hunting to put food on the table then terming it bloodsport is needlessly emotive.

  16. Perhaps because even law abiding and well-educated persons need to defend their lives on occasion.

Or hunt. The debate tends to surround pistols which generally aren't used for hunting, but if we're talking about guns something like a Remington Model 700 is generally directed at game not people. Also, even if we are talking about pistols only, a competition pistol isn't intended to kill, they're intended to hit targets. Sure a match grade pistol can be used to kill, but that isn't their intended purpose. I'm ignoring recreational purposes for owning a gun as those doing recreational shooting usually grab a gun designed for killing or competition for that purpose.

Also, I wonder if LDSG feels the same way about owning a bow. The purpose behind owning a bow maps rather well with the purposes behind owning a gun. Killing (admittedly not usually in self defense), competing, or recreation.

  17. I like things hot. The thing is that it needs to have balance. While those not used to spice may not think so there is a balance at play, something can be hot without overpowering everything else going on in the dish. As you get used to heat it becomes less prone to washing out everything else. So unless I'm just trying to by masochistic or don't actually want to taste the food I like my food to be below the washout point.

As far as the hottest thing I've eaten, I popped a habanero in my mouth.

  18. I think this also has something to do with the personality of different people. To some people debate is debate, and not personal. To some debate is conflict. To some debate is boring. etc... When you have all sorts of people coming together online it is really easy to misunderstand where a person is coming from and how they feel about things, it makes communication really hard.

The tone-deafness of written language doesn't help either*. In a face to face conversation a matter-of-fact tone can communicate someone is trying to be dispassionate, or a soft tone can indicate they're trying to gently introduce new ideas into the conversation for consideration rather then trying to declare as if they were coming from on high. Not that all tone and body language in face to face conversations fosters communication but the intent can be a bit clearer.

When you have long time posters this can be counteracted by their posting history. For instance, I know that Vort is usually trying to matter-of-factly present information and ideas (or examine the same) not rail at people with spittle specked lips. If you don't have a posting history with someone though it can often be left up to the reader's imagination how something is perceived. You touch on this with your edit.

*Sufficient effort and clarification can help impart a tone to the written word (it doesn't necessarily require wordiness) but generally people don't spend that much time on internet forum posts. They tend to write to get their point across to the degree they're satisfied with rather then trying to create a masterpiece of the written word.
