  1. Human beings have less than 700 muscles but a caterpillar has over 4,000.
  2. The average bear can smell a human from more than 12 miles away.
  3. Other than the human the only other mammal to have a true knee (patella) is the elephant. The elephant is also the only mammal that can't jump. I always think of this when someone asks if I think God has a sense of humor. BTW, the answer is yes He does. :)
  4. My husbands rocks! I've been so busy with my church calling and getting some things done for some folks outside the church and with my grandkids and everything else I have going on that I haven't had time to give my home the attention it needs. When I walked in the door a little while ago, my husband was vacuuming. I love that man!
  5. Jason, you are so very cool......but then you already knew that. :)
  6. Elphaba wrote: In the link below are the breakdowns of which race commits crimes in which percentages. For example, 39.1 percent of whites commit murder compared to 59.3 percent of blacks. This is actually 39.1% of all murders are committed by whites (who make up close to 70% of the US population) and 59.3% of all murders are committed by blacks (who make up about 20% of the US population) However, it also shows that 54.7 percent of whites compared to 43.4 percent of blacks commit sexual assaults. This is really 54.7% of all sexual assaults are committed by whites (who, again, make up close to 70% of the US population) and 43.4 percent of all sexual assaults are committed by blacks (who, again, make up about 20% of the total US population) So there are a much higher percentage of blacks committing these crimes than are whites; i.e. 20% of the population is committing more than half of all crimes of these types. That said, if you judge individuals by what you know or think you know about groups, you are missing opportunities to make great friends. I think when we meet a person for the first time we should make an effort to see them thru the eyes of our Heavenly Father first and then go from there.
  7. If Mother Theresa doesn't go to Heaven then I sure as heck don't have much of a chance.
  8. Welcome to the board. I think you're going to love it here.
  9. HEY! How did he know we are crazy??!!
  10. Pedantic means to be overly picky about details. As far as knowing his real name.....look at the last line in his opening post. :)
  11. I love older people! They know so much. We have gotten some of our older sisters to teach us how to make a quilt, how to can and make jelly and preserves. A lot of them know how to crochet and knit and paint and write poetry and all kinds of neat things. I suggest you send around a survey asking everyone in RS what their current hobbies or interests are (like cooking, crafts, reading, knitting, exercising, etc.) and then ask everyone to list the ones they would be willing to share and/or teach. You could also ask what everyone might be interested in learning and then go from there. You can form small groups that have meetings and ask people to bring friends from outside the church.
  12. Hi! Fellow bike rider here. I live in south Texas though so I only get to ride from November until April. Then it gets way too hot and I have to give it up.
  13. It's good to have you here.
  14. I think it's neat that he noticed. I might not have at that age.
  15. I live in Brazoria County, Texas. The cost of living here is very low. The home you describe would sell for about $180,000 around here. We have a great ward and we hang out together a lot. In a city of about 30,000 people we only have about 600 LDS families so we get together for bar-b-ques, we play rook every month and do a ton of other stuff. Of course we invite friends from outside the church too but our church family is very close.
  16. Welcome a-board!
  17. Wow! Do you always have a GA at your Stake Conferences? I haven't been to very many even though I've been a member since 1984 because I almost always had to work but this is the first time I know of that we've had a GA in attendance. I do live close to the middle of nowhere though so that may be the problem.
  18. Welcome to the family, Sister! Now all you've got to do is endure until the end. Piece of cake. :)
  19. I got to meet L. Whitney Clayton and his wife Kathy last night and this morning. We're having Stake Conference and they came and gave amazing talks. I took 7 pages of notes. This was my first chance to meet a GA and I was not disappointed. He was funny and sweet and spiritual and.....well, it was just really neat. He spoke about the importance of the Temple and about sharing the gospel with love, kindness and patience; especially with our family members, even our children.
  20. My GGGGGGG grandfather died in route to America from England. My GGGGGG grandfather continued on and set foot on American soil as a very young child. My GGGGG grandfather had 20 children, most of whom moved with him to Kentucky. All the way down to my father, these men were farmers. My dad was the first man in his line to leave the farm and get a job in a factory after WWII. I've found a lot of interesting little stories along the way. My GG grandfather was murdered by a man by the name of John Chapman (not THE Johnny Appleseed). I have cousins a few generations back who were killed by Indians while on their way to California for the gold rush. Just lots of little details that help make these people come alive for me.
  21. I have one line back to 1126 in England and a whole bunch from the last 9 generations.
  22. Headaches associated with high altitudes don't usually happen until above 8,000 ft. They are usually caused by a combo of dehydration and low O2 pressure. You should move to a lower altitude and drink liquids if this happens. Taking aspirin will only mask the problem.
  23. Are you asking what we've done for our husbands? If you are then I have to say the best gift I've ever given him was a one hour massage. The thing he loves best for me to do is when I have time to go for a walk with him. He walks about 2 1/2 miles nearly every day for his health and he likes to be able to talk my ear off the whole way.
  24. Thanks. I don't know where my car keys are but I know the electric chair was invented by a dentist. My brain has tons of completely useless info taking up space I need for other things.
  25. I live at about 30 feet above sea level on the gulf coast. I hiked part of the continental divide in Colorado a few years ago. I rode a bicycle hard (2 to 3 hours 6 days a week) to get prepared for it but the altitude still kicked by tush. My lungs, at times, felt like they were searching around for individual O2 molecules in the air. My advice is to physically prepare but travel light and plan on resting a lot more than you would normally expect to.
