Really nothing to say about a man who helped keeped his people starving and in the dark. Kim Jong Il Dead: North Korea Leader Dies (VIDEO) North Korean television announced in a "special broadcast" that its leader Kim Jong Il has died in Pyongyang, the AP reports. Kim's death was announced Monday from the state capital of Pyongyang. He reportedly suffered a stroke in 2008, but appeared relatively healthy on recent trips around Asia, which were documented by state media. Reuters adds that the country had begun transferring power to his son, Kim Jong-un, who is believed to be in his late 20s.

I remember watching HBO when Dennis Miller had his Friday night show on and I seem to remember watching an interview with some reporter who seemed like he was half drunk and he wrote a book bashing Mother Teresa. I wasn't too interested in the subject but did think it was really low class to criticize that woman. Now I'm wondering if that person I saw interviewed was Hitchens. I think it was. I recently got a book from the library by him - How Religion Poisons Everything. I checked it out simply because of the brutal title. I got through the first three pages and gave up. I didn't care for his writing style. I did flip through it - he does go after all main religions, including LDS. I did read something in that book or online by him that really hit true - he was talking when he was young and he first met English politicians and found most of them very un-remarkable and even rather dumb. In other words - not special or amazing at all. If only Americans could wake up and see many of our politicians are exactly like that - nothing special at all, I suspect many would be voted out, on both sides.

Saudis Behead Woman for Practicing Witchcraft
HoosierGuy replied to HoosierGuy's topic in Current Events
No, I'm not joking. I'm very serous. Amazing, 9/11 takes place and the king of Saudi Arabia gets his hand held by the President in the state of Texas of all places. Absolutely pathetic. -

I can't believe so many of you are against the idea of overthrowing this corrupt "kingdom." -
Saudis Behead Woman for Practicing Witchcraft
HoosierGuy replied to HoosierGuy's topic in Current Events
Uh, I'm confused. Are you talking about the Iraq war? Because you described it to a T! We try to pick a fight with Iran. And look at this map on Juan Cole's site - it shows the U.S. has bases surrounding Iran. Iran has US Surrounded, All Right | Informed Comment As for Saudi Arabia - don't forget 9/11. Don't forget who owns a good portion of Fox News. Don't forget the American moms who can't get their children back because their Saudi husbands took the kids to Saudi Arabia and refuses to return. -

No. First we pull all troops out. Then declare war, and then bomb Riyadh and overthrow a barbaric regime. -
Well, Americans are willing to live with this since we all want cheap oil. Saudis behead woman for practicing witchcraft A Saudi woman in her 60s was beheaded today for being a witch, according to reports out of the desert kingdom. Amina bint Abdul Halim bin Salem Nasser was executed in the northwest province of Jawf. She was convicted of "practicing witchcraft and sorcery," the Interior Ministry said in a statement carried by the official SPA news agency, AFP says. The country's high court upheld the death penalty.

Can you be more specific about those that have not had an opportunity? Who exactly does that mean? Does it mean the child that dies at ten years of age? Does it mean the woman who wanted to wait until she is 40 to marry but dies when she is 39? What about the young man or woman who was abused as a child and hates the thought of marrying or even touching someone the rest of their lives?

It's mostly men who force their religious beliefs on women and force them into submission. Just look at religious corruption and suppression be it Islam or Christian, it's nearly always from the men.

Sad. He was a very good actor.

Afghanistan is in the dark ages. Those men are very corrupt and evil.

The Federal Government really needs to clamp down on those supplement/diet pill makers. Most of their claims are unsubstantiated. It's nothing more that lying.

You can learn all about evangelicals and their views of Jesus by reading those infamous Chick Tracks booklets. They can be hateful but they are fun to read if you are not Catholic, LDS, Muslim, Buddhist, gay, drug user, rapist, nature lover, Hollywood people, etc...

Why is this kind of big business loving thread aloud when Occupy Wall Street threads are not allowed? That is taking sides with big business.

Thinking more about it - I hope everyone involved gets sent to prison over this horrible event and cover up.

In a perfect world they both would have reported. But do you think the janitor just might be afraid of losing his job? I heard on TV that the president of the university went to Paterno's home a few years ago (I think a few years ago) and tried to convince him to retire. Paterno threw the president out of his house! And the graduate student - The guy was probably working hard for his advanced degree. He told a superior. Maybe he didn't want to jeopardize his degree and become involved in such a sick situation. Again, he told someone. I hope they go after the board of directors or whoever runs the university, plus punish them by shutting down the football team for a good ten years. Punish the criminals and punish the university harshly by shutting the football team down for a decade.

Greenhouse Gas Levels at Worst Case Scenario Levels
HoosierGuy replied to HoosierGuy's topic in Current Events
Yes, take it all back to the Eocene age. I hope it happens in my life time so I can tour the jungles of Antarctica. Godzilla Carbon Emissions in 2010 Unprecedented | Informed Comment Tom Boden, head of the Department of Energy’s Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center in Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, is quoted by AFP: “It’s big… Our data go back to 1751, even before the Industrial Revolution. Never before have we seen a 500-million-metric-ton carbon increase in a single year.” 512 million metric tons, to be precise. Well, if it hasn’t been done since 1751, it has never been done by human beings. The last time this happened was 55 to 40 million years ago, in the Eocene. When India went plowing into Asia and threw up the Himalayas, the impact heated up the crust and released massive amounts of carbon dioxide. That happened, likely, over a long period of time, but the effect was an increase in the average surface temperature of the earth of 4-5 degrees Celsius. Antarctica became a tropical jungle. -
With India having millions of poor plus those in China, I don't see things changing. World emissions of carbon dioxide soar higher than experts’ worst case scenario for climate - The Washington Post The global output of heat-trapping carbon dioxide jumped by the biggest amount on record, the U.S. Department of Energy calculated, a sign of how feeble the world’s efforts are at slowing man-made global warming. The new figures for 2010 mean that levels of greenhouse gases are higher than the worst case scenario outlined by climate experts just four years ago.

Housing manager disciplined for criticizing gay marriage
HoosierGuy replied to Jamie123's topic in Current Events
British and European law is very cool. A woman was sued recently by Sky broadcasting. She wanted to watch soccer but did not want to pay the monthly Sky feed. So she bought a receiver that would pick up the German TV signals and watch soccer that way. Sky sued and said if she is going to watch British soccer it must be though Sky TV and not free German TV. The case went to the European court and they sided with the woman! They said she was watching live soccer and you can't copyright live TV, only the fonts used on the screen during the production, something along those lines. Anyway, she won, the way it should be. What does this have to do with the post? It looks like British and European laws are very much for the people. In this case they are not messing around with some hate speech from a Christian evangelical. -
7 billion people on the planet by the end of october
HoosierGuy replied to bcguy's topic in Current Events
Population to reach 7 billion today (Monday). http://www.lds.net/forums/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=35 MANILA, Philippines - Countries around the world marked the world's population reaching 7 billion Monday with lavish ceremonies for newborn infants symbolizing the milestone and warnings that there may be too many humans for the planet's resources. While demographers are unsure exactly when the world's population will reach the 7 billion mark, the U.N. is using Monday to symbolically mark the day. A string of festivities are being held worldwide, with a series of symbolic 7-billionth babies being born. -
Idling longer than 2 minutes now illegal in Salt Lake City
HoosierGuy replied to pam's topic in Current Events
How is the public transportation service in Salt Lake? I mean: trains, buses, subways, etc..? I think in a case like this you are only to get the pollution down by cutting down on the amount of vehicles that drive in the city. -
I just finished a book on Columbus and his fourth voyage to the Americas. After reading the book I'm very happy I was not on any of those voyages. Too many ways to die, too many way to die horribly hungry or thirsty.

Don't we have laws in the U.S. that say bystanders must report these kinds of things to the police?
