pam Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 Okay so I was talking with a good friend of mine about blogging. We discussed when to respond to a blog and when not to. What kind of responses should we give and what shouldn't we. So the idea behind a blog is usually to give kind of a diary about your life. Perhaps a situation in your life you'd like to get into words. Maybe even a funny story that you wanted to write down. It can be about anything. One thing I have a hard time with is the impersonal responses that we sometimes get. Perhaps nothing more than a scripture. While scriptures are good (don't get me wrong), it can be somewhat impersonal. Especially when nothing else is said. So what is proper blogging etiquette? Now I'm talking about the blogs on this site. What is the proper etiquette in responding? I've noticed a couple of posters that feel they have to respond to every blog even if they have nothing to add. Is this appropriate? It just takes away from the posts that actually have SOMETHING to say. Just wanting to know thoughts on this. I'm on a rant today can you tell? Quote
Soulsearcher Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 I used to blog a lot more on this site, but i really lost interest for the most part. Random responses, people just posting anything without considering it it really kinda fit as a blog, just for the sake of posting. The blogs on the site used to be about peoples lives, used to be insight in to their hopes, fears, and just a good read. Now i guess i just feel let down when i read through blogs that read like articles from a news site of random scriptures with no thoughts or feelings put with them. Where are the blogs of yesterday? Truegrits Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 I'm not sure...this blog site is set up differently than others I have used. In fact, I have not really known how to use this one...unsure of what is proper/expected. So the idea behind a blog is usually to give kind of a diary about your life. Perhaps a situation in your life you'd like to get into words. Maybe even a funny story that you wanted to write down. Exactly...but for some reason, I have not felt the continuity/flow of blogging here. So, obviously, I am clueless...LOL Quote
pam Posted February 27, 2009 Author Report Posted February 27, 2009 Or perhaps blogging just to be the one with the most blogs? I hear ya Soul. Quote
Connie Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 I've noticed a couple of posters that feel they have to respond to every blog even if they have nothing to add. Is this appropriate? siouxz72 Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 I agree with you soul...and you to, pammy. I usually blog about stuff that happens in my little world that is funny. I also use it to brag about my cute little babies. Or share a story that happened. I've written a couple of blogs lately where I just needed to get the thoughts/feelings out of my system. I usually delete those as soon as I post them. lol... But I fully agree, if you're just going to cut and paste scripture or a passage and not even comment about why you like the passage then why bother? Quote
KeithLBrown Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 I try to post blogs that I feel are both informative and uplifting. I try to carefully consider what I should post and not just post something for the sake of posting as if there is some contest to see who can post the most blogs. My feelings are that blogs should say something of significance and give the reader something to think about and comment on. As far as making comments, again I try to think about what I might say that would be beneficial to the person who wrote the blog and to future readers. Personally, I think that posting comments just for the sake of posting comments detracts from the blog itself. I have seen some responses to blogs that take off on tangents that have absolutely NOTHING to do with the original blog and before long the whole intent of the original blog post is lost. My feelings are, if a person is going to post a response, they need to stay on point in order to ensure a smooth flow of thought that everyone can follow. There is no rule that anyone has to respond to every post that is made. Just my two cents. Quote
Guest missingsomething Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 I personally hate the responses that are 1/2 a page long just quoting a book, article or scripture. Give me the link - I can read for myself... unless you are going to personalize it with comment. And pam... I also hate the post that are "I have nothing to say..."... SO WHY SAY anything? And.. then there are some real debbie-downers who always rain on someone's parade...who can NEVER agree with the previous posts. lol Hmm pam... am I a non-blog blogger? Am I a blogger booger? Quote
Wingnut Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 Am I a blogger booger?Heehee.I think I've posted three blogs here, maybe four. Mostly they are things I need to get off my chest, but I don't want to put on my personal blog where people actually know me or the people I'm venting about. One blog that I posted was LDS cartoons. I don't generally read the blogs on this site because I don't know the people. Yeah, I develop a relationship with other members on this site, but it's still anonymous. That said, when I do actually read a blog on here, I try to make some comment just as a courtesy to let the author know I read it. I would appreciate the same. Just make some comment acknowledging that you read it. (For example: when I posted all the funny cartoons, I thought for sure there would be lots of comments about them being funny, or thanks for sharing. I think I got one. Not that I posted it seeking approval, but acknowledgment is nice.)On my last comment...if you are seeking approval based on response to your blog on an anonymous website, you probably need to do some personal inventory in real life. Elphaba Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 Surprise surprise! Elphaba is on another rant. I am Pam's good friend and we had a long discussion about the blogs this morning, mostly because she was listening to me vent. I am past the point of irritation when it comes to people posting blogs with scriptures in them, but nothing else. As demonstrated by this thread, we all understand blogs are for personal expressions. And I used to open these posts thinking that eventually there would be something personal, but it never happened, so I stopped opening them. I'll be blunt: I think this is rude. When someone consistently posts these virtually empty blogs, they push everyone else's posts off the front page. Within a very short amount of time, people's personal blogs are 4 or 5 pages in, and no one is going to see it. It's true I don't write blog posts often, but believe me, when I do, I want kudos! But when I see it's already been shoved into infinity, I really don't see the point of writing any more. Pam, thanks for the thread. Grumpy Elphaba Quote
skalenfehl Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 Good point, Elphaba. Kudos! Quote
Elphaba Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 On my last comment...if you are seeking approval based on response to your blog on an anonymous website, you probably need to do some personal inventory in real life. So, what if you do the inventory, and you still need to seek approval on an anonymous website, because that's the only place you're going to get it? BTW, I bet the reason people didn't see your funny post is it was already shoved onto page 23532643263 by then.Elph Quote
Elphaba Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 Am I a blogger booger?Yes. Yes you are. So am I.But I'm green, so I'm grosser.Elphaba Quote
pam Posted February 28, 2009 Author Report Posted February 28, 2009 Unfortunately it applies to posts on forums as well. But I'm sure we are preaching to the choir. The ones who ought to take this advise will think it doesn't apply to them. Quote
skalenfehl Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 Or don't know any better because they're not reading this on account of another blogging crusade. Quote

siouxz72 Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 lol! hey ya'll! I just posted a new blog that is both personal and a way for me to acknowledge an answer to prayer and that a good friend is very wise in his advise to me :) Quote
Dr T Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 So Pammy, does that mean if I read somebody's blog and just consider what they wrote and thank them for their blog, is that wrong to do? Quote
Palerider Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 what are we having here....rules or etiquette... Quote
Dr T Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 Good question Pale :) Maybe I misunderstood Quote
mavreenrose Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 you know Dr T, I feel grateful each time you comment on my blogs. It makes me feel acknowledged. I'm glad knowing that someone has read my thoughts. I don't see the point of blogging if no one reads them. Also, I am especially grateful for the insights i get from those who comment. Quote
Palerider Posted February 28, 2009 Report Posted February 28, 2009 Good question Pale :) Maybe I misunderstoodI asked that because at this point I am not sure which way or what we are talking about...When you or anyone makes a blog there is a space for someone to comment.....hope it gets clarified Quote

I think that's very nice and very polite, actually. I appreciate the acknowledgement.you know Dr T, I feel grateful each time you comment on my blogs. It makes me feel acknowledged. I'm glad knowing that someone has read my thoughts. I don't see the point of blogging if no one reads them. Also, I am especially grateful for the insights i get from those who comment.Again, I appreciate the acknowledgement. It's just a nice little thing to say "Hey, I read it. Thanks for sharing." Quote
