Carl62 Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 (edited) Since more and more states are starting to legalize gay marriage, I got to thinking as a result of this "what if polygamy got legalized in the United States?" If this got legalized and then the prophet reversed the Manifesto and now COMMANDED that everyone was to live this principle, would YOU be able to do it? I know this all seems kinda far-fetched, but with the way things are going with gay marriage, I wouldn't rule out the possiblilty of polygamy to be the next thing looked at for legalization. Dravin Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Well first off everyone would be a first. That said I think yes. I'm single though, so I don't have a real attachment to a wife yet that would make things so horribly difficult on the visceral level. Quote
Carl62 Posted July 11, 2009 Author Report Posted July 11, 2009 Well first off everyone would be a first.Yeah I know. I just thought I'd throw that in there to spicin' it up. Hey, but you never know... Quote
Seanette Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I really don't know. As hard as I try to be obedient, I do have some insecurity issues (not DH's fault). OTOH, could be to my benefit to have another woman around for company and to help me manage DH. He's been known to comment he's not sure he could handle two wives, especially if we're PMSing at the same time. Quote
Carl62 Posted July 11, 2009 Author Report Posted July 11, 2009 I remember reading where some guy was asked if he could take on a second wife and he said, "Heck, the one I that have right now already has about three personalities, so why would I want to take on another one?!" Quote
Palerider Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I voted "NO".....only have one mother in law now....do not want anymore....:eek: Quote
Dravin Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I voted "NO".....only have one mother in law now....do not want anymore....:eek:Marrying sisters would take care of that... of course it'd probably introduce its own . Quote
LDSVALLEY Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I would not like it but if the Prophet told us too I and my wife would do it. Although with my income it would not be much chance, I can barely support one family and am 6 years behind in chores around the house. Quote
Palerider Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Marrying sisters would take care of that... of course it'd probably introduce its own . and if you don't get sisters....you get more mother in laws.....:) Quote
Moksha Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 I wouldn't rule out the possibility of polygamy to be the next thing looked at for legalization. I think marijuana will be decriminalized first, since it has more proponents. Quote

Not gonna happen Quote
ruthiechan Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Assuming I have veto rights, I can manage just fine. I would be very particular about the kind of woman I would want to live with, and to influence my husband, and to be a second mother to my child. Quote
pam Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 Well since I'm not currently married...any single guy out there want to marry me so I can then decide if I want to share you or not? Quote

Carl62 Posted July 11, 2009 Author Report Posted July 11, 2009 Oh, the pain, the agony and the ire to ask of such a thing! To know that I would have the bitter anguish of having to make that trip up to Hef's mansion and having to pick between Miss February, Miss March, Miss April, Miss May, Miss June, Miss August, (July was in the Bahamas) and possibly Miss September is simply beyond anything I could possibly imagine. Oh the torment of it all, having those kind of wives. Quote
Just_A_Guy Posted July 11, 2009 Report Posted July 11, 2009 (edited) Just because the law makes polygamy legal, doesn't mean God will make it legal. I have a pet theory that polygamy was rescinded as much because the Church was showing it couldn't handle the principle, as it was because of trouble with the US government. As for me: it would be complicated, because I've already had pornography issues during my current marriage. I doubt my wife would trust me to pick a new wife for the right reasons--heck, I wouldn't even trust myself to do it for the right reasons.I've read about polygamous families in the past where the first wife pretty much selected--and even, in a few cases, proposed on behalf of the husband to--the new wife. If my family were compelled to live polygamy, that's probably how we'd go about it.By the way, Carl, I'd be interested to see you break this poll down by gender. Justice Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 I answered no. But, I want to stress again that even if it became legal, that doesn't mean the Church would practice it, nor does it mean the vast majority would even be asked to. Having said that, my answer is still no. I really don't know what I would do if faced with it, but from where I sit now... no. I'm male. Quote
Dravin Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 and if you don't get sisters....you get more mother in laws.....Well you could go the orphan route.twins? Not what I had in mind but I suppose twins are siblings. Quote
Palerider Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 the point is....you still end with more than 1 mother in law......don't you know thats why they stopped polygamy...... Quote

Maxel Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 I have doubts about being able to do it (even in the best of circumstances), but I still answered "yes".1 Nephi 17:50"...If God had commanded me to do all things I could do them. If he should command me that I should say unto this water, be thou earth, it should be earth; and if I should say it, it would be done." Quote
Ezequiel Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 it would be so hard, especially when finding ONE spouse is hard as is... Quote
ploomf Posted July 12, 2009 Report Posted July 12, 2009 I voted yes but I don't know. I would hope I could do it but it's really easy to sit here and say I could do it but if I was actually in that situation? I don't know. So my answer is that I would hope I could be faithful enough. Quote
