If she's...

Catholic, just call her Cathlack (bonus points if her first name is Danielle).

Baptist, just call her Boptist (bonus points if her first name is Bea).

Lutheran, just call her Latheran (bonus points if her first name is Dove)

That's how most people tend to spell it when they have only ever come across the word "mormon" in vocal conversation. Being a non-social geek, I tend to have this problem but in reverse. I know how to spell words (generally) but pronouncing them can prove to be a bit of a problem.

Incidently, this misspelling of mormon has become a big enough issue for the church to register the domain morman.org - it simply redirects to the real site. I'm not sure if this is actually a good thing or a bad thing. It's a bit like autocorrect in microsoft word, while it may be convenient, it isn't solving the actual problem of people not being able to spell properly. Instead it's just making it worse.

Oh, I take "Morman" as a compliment! It's their way of telling us how manly and virile we are! :D Wanna be a real man? Join the Church!

I don't think even the Church can make you look like a REAL man! :P

Speaking from research, the term "Morman" is a mutation of the term "Mormon", used in areas where the demographic ratio of men to woman is unfavorable to women. In areas where the ratio is unfavorable to men, the term is Morwoman. In areas where there is a high incidence of robbery, the term used by HG Wells in his book "The Time Machine" -- "Morlock" -- applies.

Latheran isn't quite subtle enough -- shouldn't it be Luthrin?

I know quite a few people who pronounce the denomination that way, by leaving out the 'er' in the middle and changing the end from an to in, so depending on if she's like me* (and others) she might not notice a difference. It'd be like changing your pronunciation of Layton (Lay-Ton) to Leight-en, a Utahn wouldn't notice. :)

* For me it's Luth-rin, not Luth-er-an.

Well, that's kind-of my point. Mormon and Morman would be pronounced the same, wouldn't they? Lutheran and Luthrin are often pronounced the same, but it's an ignorance in spelling that is the issue.

(FWIW, most Utahns I know pronounce it Lay-uhn. Also, moun-uhn instead of mountain.)

Depends what you want to stress, I've heard people pronounce it as More-Man as opposed to to Mormən which with the schwa doesn't much care if you stick an "o" or an "a" in there (or an "e" for that matter).

I think we're just using different ways to transcribe the same sound, it's eh/uh with a guttural quality, almost like the "t" is being swallowed, there are hints of it but gash darn if you can find it. :D

Most people I know from Utah drop the 't' altogether in words like mountain and Layton. Unfortunately, it makes them sound more ignorant and/or uneducated than they often are.

And of course the majority of people in Utah are ignorant. That's what it appears you are implying. I know many people in other states that say libary instead of library. But I don't take it to mean they are less educated necessarily. Just the way things are said in different parts of the country.

I didn't intend for it to come across that way, but given my history of opinions regarding people from Utah (in general), I can see how it might. I actually was trying to give more credit here than I normally do, but I guess I was unsuccessful. "Libary" and "prolly" drive me absolutely nuts.

ok. somewhat off topic, but many years ago, I was at a party, and was the only LDS member, and we were playing a game called Celebrity, which is kind of like charades, but you can talk, and my friend was trying to give clues, and keep pointing to me and saying "his religion, his religon", but no one could figure out what he meant, and time ran out. Turns out he was going for Ethel "Morman".

Probably it happens because people tend to write things more phonetically if thety don't have experience with it.
