john doe Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 Apparently she couldn't claim to have been misquoted after she was videotaped saying things about Jews needing to go back to Germany and Poland, where life was all peaches and cream for them back in the 1930s and '40s. Helen Thomas ends 5-decade career in controversy - Yahoo! News Quote
pam Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 She has done some great interviews over the years. She's always been highly opinionated..but come on..she's a press reporter. She should know to be careful in saying what in front of who. Or unless at her age she just didn't care. Quote
HoosierGuy Posted June 7, 2010 Report Posted June 7, 2010 (edited) We need more reporters like Helen Thomas. She has the guts to ask the tough questions without coming from a certain political angle like so many reporters who want to make a name for themselves or represent their own companies beliefs (Fox News.) Ok, she made one mistake and apologized and now retired. She did the honorable thing. Edited June 7, 2010 by HoosierGuy Spelling Quote
Moksha Posted June 8, 2010 Report Posted June 8, 2010 If only Mormons had that same power to punish. Wait a minute, take that back - the power to punish is not a good thing. Especially in a country that theoretically upholds free speech without fear of religious reprisal. Quote
HoosierGuy Posted June 8, 2010 Report Posted June 8, 2010 I just watched the news and story about this. So she said these things when someone was interviewing her? I thought she said all this to the President during a press conference. Not so. I think she was at some Jewish event at the White House. Anyway, although her stance may be wrong she did say it while not officially on the job interviewing the President or Press Secretary. Quote
Wingnut Posted June 8, 2010 Report Posted June 8, 2010 It took me a few posts to realize that you weren't actually referring to the actress who played the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz. I was surprised that she'd still been working. Quote

She may not have been interviewing the President or the Press Secretary but she said it on the White House lawn on her way to the Jewish American Heritage Month celebration at the White House. To a Jewish Rabbi no less. I guess that makes it okay then. Quote
john doe Posted June 8, 2010 Author Report Posted June 8, 2010 Oh, well that makes everything she said all okay then. Because what a reporter or talking head does or says to reporters when they are 'off the clock' is no one else's business, right? Quote

FunkyTown Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 Having watched the video, I have to say: I think this was a bit of an overreaction. She's someone who follows the international stage. To her, Israel moving in to Palestine and displacing palestinians would be similar to a very large group of people from Mexico moving to California and displacing the residents there to a small ghetto. It would not have turned out well despite a historical claim to California. What she said was not politically correct. I also think it's not actually correct, since a lot of people have now been born in Israel. Regardless, I think it would be best to give her the benefit of the doubt on this one. I feel badly for her. One impolitic statement should not end your career, even though it often does. Quote
