I posted this on facebook but I'm going to try it here as well.

A couple of us from lds.net are planning a trip to Nauvoo from Utah in 2016.  It's pretty much a church history trip.  It was suggested I post this on lds.net by another who is making the same trip next year.

We will be driving and taking I-80 across.

For those of you that may have made this trip, what church historical sites are along the way?  We don't want to be taken miles off of the I-80 route as time is a factor.

Also I think the first night we may stay in No. Platte, Nebraska.  Anything around that area that might be of interest and having to do with church history?

Church history trip!? Then I have to share Gramp's experience :).

From Palmyra to Missouri

Another stop you may enjoy on a cross-country trip is the Kanesville Tabernacle. This is a replica of the tabernacle that was constructed specifically so the Latter-day Saints could hold a solemn assembly to once again form the First Presidency with Brigham Young at the head. Before going, I would recommend reading up on the succession crisis and the steps for forming the First Presidency today. I find it extremely faith-promoting as a contrast to how leadership is selected in the world.

A number of other sites deserve an honorable mention. Sites like Winter QuartersMartin’s Cove, and the Mormon Battalion. And can I really leave out Temple Square? Of course not.

I have no idea if these are off the 80 or not, but you can follow the links to see them on a map.

Now why didn't I think of Gramps?  He knows everything.  :P

The only suggestion I would add is that if you have any ancestors that crossed the plains, look into their stories and visit places that are mentioned.  For instance, I have a great great (great? - can never remember) that lived in Iowa while the saints were in Nauvoo (that's when he joined the Church) so I'd go to that town to get an idea of distance from his place to Nauvoo.  I also have an ancestor buried at Winter Quarters so I'd make sure to visit her grave, not just the cemetery. Things like that might make the trip a bit more personal.

For sure make a stop in Omaha Nebraska.  Actually Florence at what we call once called Winter Quarters.   Of all Church Historic places – I was struck the most by this sight and the numbers of young mothers and new borne children buried there.  It is their sacrifice that taught me more about what we owe those that have gone before more than any other single event in my life.
