Guest Posted December 20, 2016 Report Posted December 20, 2016 It won't so much be involving exercise, but what I drink and eat. I'm cutting out Gatorade which I drank instead of water and will now only drink water and milk and I'm completely cutting out candy like chocolate and things like it. I'll stick to my meals, water, and milk and hope I can start slowly losing weight and get over my sleep apnea. Quote
zil Posted December 20, 2016 Report Posted December 20, 2016 Zarahemla, I wish you luck, I will pray for you, and I recommend you approach this not just with your own discipline, but also from the perspective of obeying God* and request divine help with your efforts. * I think studying the various scriptures about health and how we are to care for our mortal body might help you to stick to your plans. zil Posted December 20, 2016 Report Posted December 20, 2016 Just now, Zarahemla said: Thanks. I know my body is my temple and I need to treat my temple better. I recently felt prompted to teach a Sunday RS lesson about the Sabbath, but it seemed like such a well-known topic that I wasn't sure how to stretch it for a full lesson. So I just started in the topical guide and was, frankly, surprised at how much I found that was new or different or inspired different thinking. That's where my suggestion was coming from - even though the doctrine is one that is familiar, a fresh study of it, from scripture, can help us to see it in a new light, and thereby strengthen our resolve to obey - since you're embarking on a difficult goal, and will need something to distract you from food.... Guest Posted December 21, 2016 Report Posted December 21, 2016 Make sure you're at least getting enough electrolytes. Too much water causes water toxification. If you eat a pickle a day, that should take care of it. Quote
Guest Posted December 21, 2016 Report Posted December 21, 2016 What are good alternatives to electrolytes? Quote
NeuroTypical Posted December 21, 2016 Report Posted December 21, 2016 I don't know, but I do believe if you eat three meals a day that contain decent food, you don't need to drink any Gatorade at all, or replace it with anything. Pickle a day? Sounds good to me. Quote
anatess2 Posted December 21, 2016 Report Posted December 21, 2016 Awesome Zarahemla! I'm going to do it with you. But, I'm approaching it differently. This is not a diet. This is a life change. And I'm going for natural food. Things that directly come from trees and plants and animals with the least processing. So, if it comes from a box, I'll put it on my eat-occasionally list... make sense? Candy goes through a lot of processing, so it's on the occasionally list. I'm even going so far as least cooking and spicing needed. So, I try to eat veggies and fruit fresh without needing to cook them as much as possible. I hate to admit this but I gained 30 pounds the past 2 years. Unity, Sunday21, Blackmarch and 1 other 4 Quote
Guest Posted December 21, 2016 Report Posted December 21, 2016 (edited) Good luck with the diet! This last year, I tried keeping my calories between 1200 and 1500 per day, and walked 2.5 hours a week. Nothing else was involved - just counting calories. Wound up losing 65 pounds in six months! My doctor actually thought his scale was broken when I got weighed and showed a loss of all that weight. I am now within 20 pounds of my ideal weight. At this point, weight loss does slow down and plateau a little, so after the New Year I will have to work a little harder to get the last little bit under control. Pickle a day? Sounds good to me. If you do eat a truly balanced diet chances are you are correct. No additional electrolytes need to be added. But my FIL went on some fad diet that really helped him lose a LOT of weight. But then he started having some issues which were difficult to diagnose. It turned out that this fad diet was such that it cut out all sources of electrolytes. He called up the people who invented it and asked if they knew and if they'd had any other reports similar to this. They responded that no one had ever brought this up including those who invented it because they expected everyone to cheat on the diet just enough to get the electrolytes. Yes a pickle a day will do the trick. Quote
anatess2 Posted December 22, 2016 Report Posted December 22, 2016 Oh! Forgot about the electrolytes discussion... another source of electrolytes is Coconut Water. But... this can be tricky. Growing up in the Philippines drinking coconut water straight from the tree growing in our backyard, I will tell you that the Coconut Water sold in the grocery stores do not taste anything like coconut water. If the coconut water has ingredients other than YOUNG coconut water and/or coconut pulp, it's not good. Quote
Blackmarch Posted January 30, 2017 Report Posted January 30, 2017 Unless youre being really active id avoid gatorade as a daily drink... Its geared more towards folks who are burning thru sugar, salt, and water pretty quickly, and its morevof a quickfix than a long term one. A good meal should be able to provide all the salts and sugars your body needs for an average day. While too much water is bad ive generally heard that americans dont drink enough of it. Ive used water plenty of times to take the edge off hunger. A good rule of thumb as well is the more color variety in your food the better. You may also wantb to look into having more mini meals than having a couple big meals in a day as well. zil 1 Quote
priesthoodpower Posted January 30, 2017 Report Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) Good luck, I got my blood-sugar tests done this past week. and I went from borderline pre-diabetic in 2015, which was my first test, to dropping a few points back into the normal range this past week. I avoided the doctor the whole of 2016 because I failed to change my eating habits and was afraid that the next time I saw him I would be pre-diabetic which would mean that my insurance rates would go up, heck I even gained 10lbs from 2015 to now. My goal for 2017 is to eliminate all sodas/ juices, and french fries. Thats it. Maybe in 2018 Ill eliminate the big macs and ice creams. Edited January 30, 2017 by priesthoodpower Quote

Guest LiterateParakeet Posted January 30, 2017 Report Posted January 30, 2017 (edited) Good luck Zarahemla! You have my support. Gatorade is full of sugar, drink water! Count me in! I'm with you and Anatess. My lifestyle change is much like Anatess described, plant based whole foods. Which means I will eat mostly plants, but with some meat and eggs. Almost no pre-packaged food. Today is two weeks without obvious sugar (soda pop, candy, cakes, pudding, ice cream etc) and one week off dairy and grains. Dairy and grains can be inflammatory for some people (like me.) Already I'm seeing blood sugar numbers that I have never seen before! I mean in the good range, and I have lost 5 lbs. I feel very satisfied emotionally and physically. Let's do this! 2017 is our year!!! @priesthoodpower thanks for the podcast! That is just the kind of thing I need at this stage...a daily reminder why I am doing this. So far I watched The Case Against Sugar by Gary Taubes, M.D. on youtube, read The Blood Sugar Solution by Mark Hyman M.D., currently I'm reading Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss and joined a couple support groups on Facebook.
