There are three things I hate in this world. Sin, people that get road rage, and family photos.

I have disposed every family photo I have ever seen or been a part of, they look super fake and awkward and I try at all cost to avoid looking at the ones in my house. And this is more than “Oh! I look so bad in photos.” The whole athstetic of it just looks and feels awkward. After all, who just naturally likes their family up and smiles into empty space?? And when your taking the pictures, the photographer always wants to change the way you are positioned and make you do things you would never do in real life ... *big inhale*... UGGGGGHHHHHH...

That being said, I absolutely love a good candid photo. Photos of my brother amid a discussion over a campfire, pictures of me while I throw down some sick beats on a Drumline, my little nephews building a sand castle at th beach, all things you can’t pose for. They tell who you are! I knew one family that only had candid photos hanging in their wall and it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen :)

Does anyone else have any ideas of ways to make family photos good???

I'm with you Fether- I despise family photos to.  Especially considering my mom and sisters stress for WEEKS ahead of time what everyone is going to wear.

However, the last bunch of photos actually went really well-- because we had a GREAT photographer.  I swear, she had toddler-whispering powers.  She started the session by having the little ones come up and see the camera, let them push the button to take some photos of mommy and daddy, and the "ok, it's my turn now".  For our actually photos orders were "when I count to 3, hold still and smile-- don't worry about it on 2".  So no awkward smiles held for forever.   The kids mostly had photos taken while running after their favorite toys, or otherwise having fun natural poses, etc.  The session was done fast, we were out, and the photos turned out great.

I do not mind most...but I have a back condition (kyphosis - curved back) so I HATE photos from the wrong angle. Fortunately my wife knows this so usually makes sure not to keep those photos.

My family has them planned once every like 5 years. Never too stressful, but my wife’s family is very different xD

The other day we are getting together with the whole family for a bbq. It was a rare occasion that having everyone together all at once. Well as we were about to leave, my mother-in-law said “Hey! Let’s have a family picture!” This was fine for everyone in the family cause they are very cowboyish so they were already wearing flannel shirts and matching... but I was not :P so now we have a family picture on our wall, taken from an iPhone, of the whole family in flannel cowboy attire... and me in shorts and a T-shirt xD

This is pretty common for her family.

I hear you.  My mom likes to grab non-proffesional photos as we are running out the door-- even if we have been there all week, she always wants the photo literally as we are climbing in the car to leave.  It is aggravating.
