My daughter pointed this out:

Quote

Virtually all my experience in the hospital during that first period is lost to my memory. What is not lost is my memory of a journey outside the hospital, out to what seemed the edge of eternity. I cannot speak fully of that experience here, but I can say that part of what I received was an admonition to return to my ministry with more urgency, more consecration, more focus on the Savior, more faith in His word.

I know of one particular sometime member of this forum who'd go crazy over this quote.

It's been less than a year, and I'm not sure if any of us watch the apostles sufficiently closely to notice, but has anyone noticed an increase in Elder Hollands approach to his calling since this time?

He was posting more in Instagram for a while, but it's been a while since I saw a post from him (I follow him and other Apostles there).  I figured maybe his health doesn't let him keep up.  (These weren't staff-made posts with clips from GC or whatever, like some of the other Apostles do.  Elder Holland was clearly speaking from his office specifically for social media. Presumably with staff doing the camera and posting work, but it was Elder Holland speaking directly from his desk.)

Its comments like this that occasionally make me consider, very, very briefly, whether I should start engaging with social media.

I'm pretty sure the prophet, all the apostles, and the Church are on the various popular platforms - most likely via staff.  Some posts on IG are obviously "assembled" from conference talks, press photos, etc.  The person in question may or may not have even known the content of the post (probably depends on how much they trust staff).  Others seem to be new material recorded specifically for social media.  I didn't think to look for them, but Big Brother spied on me enough to pop them into my "suggested posts" and I subscribed to avoid less desirable "suggested posts". :)  (I'm only there because a good friend asked me to post my ink reviews there.)

All that said, consider this: What if every active LDS were posting Christ-like things to social media and responding the way Elder Bednar describes in this IG reel (if you're on a computer, you can open that link in a browser - a phone may demand you install the IG app, I'm not sure).  At the very least, it would increase the chances of someone "tripping over the gospel" (so to speak).  Enough such tripping might result in more interest.  It might help missionary work.  It certainly wouldn't make social media worse.

Of course, if you have no self control and thereafter spend hours and hours mindlessly scrolling through social media, then it might be a bad idea for you.  Also, it takes a long time, consistent new posts, and proper use of "tags" to gain enough content and following to randomly show up in people's feeds / suggested posts, so it is something of a commitment.

PS: Another account I like is Tracy Y. Browning, 2nd Counselor in the Primary GP.  She often does her own unique-to-social-media posts, often talking about learning from the hymns (tripped over it after I'd started my hymn journal and was a wee bit excited to see I wasn't the only one using the hymns for study).  (And her sister-in-law is in my ward. :D )  And it's also been a while since she posted.  Maybe all the leaders of the Church are busy with President Nelson's 100th birthday, or something...

Elder Holland is back on IG today, posting his scripture study thoughts. :)
