Modesty - A question in child rearing and clothing
hordak replied to SeattleTruthSeeker's topic in Parenting
Bingo I have a 5 year old girl and i will not let her wear a 2 piece bathing suit. People say shes too young to worry about being provocative and perhaps i'm too strict. They way i see it is it is better to instill the rules now then trying to explain why they changed later. When i was a little kid i never wore a bike helmet, i was low to the ground and didn't go that fast so my parents saw no reason for them. Then when i got older, rode farther, faster, and in traffic my father decided it was time for me to get one. Needless to say after years of not having one i didn't see any reason for it later and he couldn't get me to wear one when i really "needed" it. Because of this experience i think it's best to start the standards you wish to enforce at a young age. -
love the comment

? From the link It does say the manuscript written by spalding isn't the BoM and that a study in the 80s showed it would be very unlikely that spalding was the sole author but i don't see it debunking anything. Not saying it's true just pointing out that the link provided doesn't debunk the theory, but shows opposing responses.

Are you are aware that Bush Gardens is not actually a garden? It is an amusement park owned by a corporation. Anheuser-Busch to be exact. I like the rest of the post and the idea behind it but as to the beginning. I think you got handed a faith promoting rumor . It is a beautiful though.

I find it ironic how many "hard core" Christians have a problem with Halloween, (look for the house with the front yard littered in bible tracts) but have no issues with participating in the pagan rituals of Christmas and Easter. I for one love the pagan rituals. Without them what is there, Lent.

That reminds me when i was a teen working at the local fast food joint facial piercings became pretty common. After enough of the crew had them the managers decided it would be best if they were covered up and made everyone wear band aids over them. Needless to say more customers were concerned about about the amount of "facial wounds" on the people making their food then the pieces of jewelry and the rules were changed:D I guess the removal would have been a better option. I do agree with the premise of dressing the part for the job, but the way they went about it was comical.

As a whole who knows there are very few cultures without a belief in God/Gods. However Ashoka the great, a Buddhist , was the first emperor to ban, slavery. He also banned the death penalty, and provided wells, inns, medical herbs, engineers and Drs to the neighboring countries. (of course i should note while many Buddhist don't believe in God they do believe in Karma, a reward /punishment system so it's pretty much the same.)

Nothing would change. I beleive in the Atheist wager. I think if your motivation to "be good" is purely driven by fear of punishment or anticipation of reward you will be unpleasantly suprized when God reads you like a book. As a parent i know motivation is equally, if not more important then action.

Sounds like a valid argument. Can't the church design it to fit the standard?
-
I concur. I have found good people are good people and bad people are bad regardless of religious affiliation

Works for my hero (In case people don't know that is Jack Lalanne who don't just sell juicers. Hes done stuff in his 70s most couldn't do in late teens early 20s.) I imagine your skins condition is one of the last things on your mind at 80. Besides, some people age pretty gracefully With the advance of modern science

I disagree. I have had both done and while the tattoo was discomforting the nipple piercings had my adrenaline so high from the pain i was running around topless, outside in Michigan in January to cool down. It was quicker but way more painful.

I think you missed the analogy. I'm still referring to the body as a temple.
-
I actually find it ironic that graffiti on the temple walls is bad, something to be avoided and ashamed of. Temple reconstruction because you don't approve of the architects design. A OK.

I did post the pic of that guy. But I'm not that hard core:)

I always thought it stems from our "prudish" nature. In my understanding (though i have never been there) Europe is a more casual culture. Nudity and other situations that we Americans would embarrassing and uncomfortable (there for funny when it happens to others) is more common place there. I like some of the wit shown on Brit shows like "Waiting for God" for example but nothing beats someone getting hurt or embarrassed while trying to show off. I love that good old slapstick.

*makes sure wife isn' in the room* :) I don't recall. Good idea keeping it inexpensive with the gifts. I don't know were you find the list but i don't think you hit gold until about 15 years or so iirc. Used to think it was to odd until you consider birthdays, Christmas, Valentines day and when you add kids:eek: You start out with expensive jewelry now you'll need a Porsche at 20;)

Actually it's my stomach. I do have a back design in the making but need to save the money. btw i love black flag ( though i hate all the "props" that Henry rolling gets. Greg Ginn was the life blood of the band.)

Ditto. kpatrey i wasn't trying to call the newer members out. Sorry if if felt that way.

Love the triumphs. Down the road from were i grew up was a guy who had a barn full of them, he would have a new one up for sale every other month or so. But my problem isn't the wife's blessing, it's that base housing has rules about having unregistered/ un drivable cars at your house and my garage is too small to put a car into with all the kids stuff, except their power wheel:D)

my biggest regret is selling my 79 Firebird since i was going into the service. the real dumb thing was i used to give my father so much crap for doing the same exact thing with his 1960 ford fairlane 500. I would love to have something to tinker with but my living situation wont allow it.

I don't take it personally. And your right posting on the board isn't micromanging, the question was way do people want to be micromanaged. Again we aren't talking doctrine here. The doctrine is usually pretty clear, (I.E. tithing is 10% of interest) it's the gross vs net, tithing on food stamps, taxes, gifts, WIC etc. that people turn into "clash of the GA quotes" "my Bishop vs your Stake president" stuff. Point is to encourage people to ask God himself. To get revelation and clarification on things that are not docterine. Besides IIUC Priesthood authority works much like our legal system. The US Supreme court/ Prophet speaks to the whole nation/church and Stake President / Circuit courts hold jurisdiction over a smaller portion of the nation. Bishops / State Courts even smaller segments. So while Bishop Smiths council for his ward members on issue x might be right for them it doesn't mean it's right member in a different ward. Just like California's laws aren't right for Utah and visa versa.

That is precisely my point. They are measurable. not the fear itself but the responses. Like the wind, or gravity we measure the effect of it. I can't think of any non physical entity science hasn't found a way to measure.
-
Ignoring your specific example, to avoid this thread turning into the very type i am trying to discourage, because the prophet speaks to the church as a whole and not to it's members as individuals. This means that the issues may not brought up until they affect a large portion of the church. While the Web has been around since the early 90s the church hasn't really spoken about it until the 2000s as it has become more common place in the homes of members. Or the issue might have a different answer for different people, like fast offering encouraged to "generous" and not a specific amount as generous to the wards lawyer would be different the to the wards janitor . Or perhaps it's the law itself that is important, and not the specific variable. Service is about helping others. This is what is important, there is no need to mandate x amount of hours per month.

It's actually number 2 on my list. (a real list of potential place we will be going to after my wife finishes her retraining ) Sola Air Station in Stavanger.
