  1. Yea my mom was very excited we went Dish so we could get BYU channel.
  2. Yea, I am kind of glad we went Dish satalite. But still a pain in the rear trying to get the one tv not connected to any other tv system to go over to digital.
  3. Although we have satelite in most of the house, we do have one tv set that doesn't have a satelite connection. We managed to get a converter box for another tv set and we seem to be having problems getting some programs. They seem to be all scaggling looking. I am thinking we may have to get another antenna. Is anyone else having problems with the whole digital transition? I am only asking because it's extremly frustrating trying to figure out how to get this stupid box to work.
  4. Agreed. It is the soul that illuminates. The physical appearance through a picture can be a distraction.
  5. I've used my real pic. Not too sure if I like it, it's pic when I was doing service with Americorps. But generally I am usually the one behind the camera soooo getting pictures of me gets to be difficult at times.
  6. It rained all yesterday. The sun came out but it was cold yesterday.
  7. I am in. Although I started to push myself to go back to church this year and to be more active in general. This will be a good way to keep myself active. I didn't go to church today because I wasn't feeling good today.
  8. I agree. And as members of the Church we believe in having personal revelations from the Sprit. So why can't Obama feel things just as easily as we can? I would never mock someone for their convictions.
  9. Well..... other than the fact than the fact that I love watching science fiction. :)
  10. I agree etymology is fun. I have no idea what type of reproduction would be avaliable before, but maybe that's something we will not figure out till all the books are open and all the answers are given. Sort of reminds me of my mom, and what she told me when she gave birth to me. She asked my father to give her a priesthood blessing to help her in childbirth and the blessing given to her was that her pain would be lessened. She likes to laugh over it but before she gave birth she fell asleep and the nurse had to wake her up to tell her that it was time to give birth.
  11. I never got to see it the first time. I think I had classes when it was on when it first came on. Course there really is no excuse now as we have a DVR in the house, and I am constantly recording everything I want to see. My favorite shows are the new Knight Rider and Life on Mars.
  12. Ahhh thanks for clarifying. Well that's intresting as well. Nephi mentioneds in Chapter 9 of 1st Nephi that he made two sets of plates. One for History and One for religious matters. The large plates held secular history and the smaller one contained relgious matters. Guess which one we have or rather we have only a part of it, as part of it was sealed and part of it was lost. You could say the same for the Bible, it is primarly a sacred text. True that many of the historical and relgious periods in the Bible can correspond to history but primarly it will mostly correspond to religious matters. The same for the Book of Mormon. For history, it is a bit tricky for the Book of Mormon as their are no survivors among the Nephite race to correpond and to collaborate history as there are among the Jews. Their are decendants of the Lamanite race but records from them are little to none. Plus a lot of records from many in South America were burned during the arrival of the Spanish. They seemed to think that they were pagan and heathern objects and they were burned. A few were salvaged for example we have the Mayan Calandar that some are saying is predicting the end of the world in 2012.
  13. That sounds horrible Rico. I am so sorry that you went through so much. I've been born into the church and so I cannot fathom all that. I talked to my mom last night, she is a convert. She told me that when she was a girl, the church she went to didn't believe that children were innocent. So all the while when she was a young girl they would tell her she was going to Hell and that she was a sinner. She was a sinner for pulling on her sister's hair, she was a sinner for this... and for that. She had to cut out black hearts because they told her she had a black heart. Needless to say she felt so burdened and worried about all that. But one night she felt something, something that told her that she wasn't a bad person and that she would be okay and a feeling of peace settled around her as a young girl. This was of course before she even knew about the church at all. But I do recognize that some churches can make you feel terrible.
  14. Here goes the detractors voices that state, prophets are suppose to be 100% correct in everything they give as a prophecy. Of course not everything prophets speak at certain periods of time is always prophecy or revelation. But I find that detractors take things as if they were sound bites with polticians, and take them out of context. The thing that matters is that when it comes to the major points of doctrine that the Lord needs to reveal then a prophet's ability will lead us in the right direction.
  15. I don't know about that, if you look at the TG in the standard works of the Scriptures. That is the ones that are authorized by our church. It states. a.fruitfull. If you look at it it states in the footnotes TG. Children and then b. multiply and it states in the footnotes TG Birth Control; Marriage, Fatherhood; Marriage, Motherhood. In otherwords in a refrence if you're looking up scritptures on Children or on the other you will find these scriptures. However, Adam and Eve were in surpreme innocence. They didn't know they were naked, so that means they had little knowledge of their sexuality or even the function of sex. They had the innocence of children. God could tell them to be fruitful and multiply but being children who couldn't understand sex or the function of it, the idea went over their heads. However, they did not have the ability to reproduce. Going on the same site that Just_A_Guy gave Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. If you go on the lexicon of seed It's the eating of the fruit of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil that gave her the ability to have children. At least if you look at the whole idea of fruit and seed that is constantly mentioned. The fruit of the tree, and the seed meaning the ability to have children. Plus that the mention of having seed only comes after the eating of the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. In the admonition that is given earlier, their is no mention of seed. Even though the statement states be fruitfull and multiply. At least this is the perspective on how I look at it.
  16. I am confused, what do you mean by factually? We are talking about works of faith. They are concepts of belief and doctrine. When you state factually, you sound as if you are attempting to pick apart a scientifically fomulated formula. Doctrines change. Acts 10: 9-15 This was mainly concerning the princpal of circumcision. But the point is doctrines are flexable and they do change. Things that took place in the OT are not what occured during the establishment of Christianty in the NT. LDS see the gospel and the church as a living and flexable thing. I am really not sure what you are trying to accomplish either.
  17. Actually I just called the sister and found out that I don't have to teach this week. She just asked me to teach incase she couldn't teach. I guess this means I am her backup/substitute. I am greatly relieved but thanks for all the advice. And I know it will be helpfull later on.
  18. Yea. The Native Americans also ate dog as well. Ironically this discussion reminds me of something that happened with my parents. My parents were moving to Las Vegas from Hathorne, NV. They had their dog with them and decided to give him away to a home. One day this Oriential woman answered my mom's advert and said in a heavily accented voice. "You have dog?" My mom cringed knowing that many Asians eat dog, plus the tone she got from the woman's voice didn't inspire any confidence in her and she said quickly, "He's already been given to a home." In the end, he ended up being taken with them to Vegas.
  19. Long story, a sister in our ward works at the Salvation Army Adult Day Care center where my brother goes in each day, as he has Downs Syndrome and this is where he spends most of his time. Anyway one of the sisters phoned and said that a peice of tupperware that was left behind. Anyway I was there when she answered the door. She asked me if I would teach a class for her in the next week as she would be out of town. I agreed thinking in my mind that it would be for primary. I've taught primary classes before, but to my horror and my revelation from my mom I found out that it isn't Primary I am teaching, it's Relief Society and I have to teach from the Manuel. Chapter 28 of the Teachings of Presidents of the Church.: Joseph Smith. I've never taught adults before and I am slightly unhinged at the fact that I so willingly volunteered without realizing what I got into. So now I am asking is there any advice on how to teach a lesson, and how to make sure I don't run over on time. And how I can manage to get enough group participation in the lesson as well? I am horrible on time management.
  20. Isn't there something in the Levitical and Mosaic laws about not eating dog? Should this go in the Pork thread? Edit: Okay I looked up the scriptures for real. Nothing about not eating dog. But none of the dog verses in the TG are too favorable towards dogs. But just those refrences would really make me turn up my nose at dog meat.
  21. I know the truth and the beliefs of the gospel. Sometimes I have troubles explaining them and sometimes I have to go over them and study again. I know that the famous line of detractors is that we follow our leaders as sheep. Although it is ironic to note that the Savior refered in His parables that He is the shepard and we are His flock. That means that we are humble, that means we are also teachable. However, the Lord also advised that we be wise as serpants yet harmless as doves. Which does mean we need to study our doctrines and our teachings so that we are not caught off gaurd by the Devil. The internet is a wonderfull thing to have in this day in age. From this tool we can learn so many things espically the doctrines and teachings of the gospel. Unfortunetly, it also means that the Advisary also can use it to spread his lies and his deceptions. It is intresting to note from the article: I am sure we can think of many commandments the church has given in our current time frame. An example of this is of the current position the church has taken on Homosexuality. It has divided many on the issue. But 1st Nephi 3:5 recalling Lehi's asking his sons to go after the Brass Plates It is not Monson or anyone else stating these commandments it is the Lord. And this is not Blind Obedience but the Faith we have in the Lord and His commandments.
  22. We finally found out why it was so hard to contact this sister this month. She called us and appologized and said that she has been sick. She thanked us for delivering her a small box of chocolate and the message. My partner, who is my mom, and myself we've also been sick so we laughed about it and said that we would try and come by next month.
  23. I've been watching a lot of History channel today which had quite a bit of stuff on Lincoln lately. I've been wondering about how he felt about the church. Intresting that he had checked out a Book of Mormon. I wish we could have known his impressions from the book. But I remember watching on the History channel that Lincoln took his dreams very seriously. And I do find it intresting to know that he had been given a dream/vision of his own death. Seeing how the Book of Mormon talks of visions and dreams. Lehi's vision to flee Jerusalem, the vision of the Iron Rod. I just wonder if the Book of Mormon connected to Lincoln more than we realize. I know a lot of this is speculation, but it does cause one to wonder just ever so breifly.
  24. Rico, I understand the whole it's hard to accept people who have shown nothing but contempt and hate for those who do not even understand. But you never know the next person who is around and hold out his/her hand to you could be someone you least expect. I have a story to tell of something like that. I was studying abroad in France before the invasion of Iraq. The news at this time was not the most plesant to hear or welcomed. A lot of it had a good deal of fear in it. My family, mostly my mom was very nervous and paniced about the whole thing. I am her only daughter and in that thought she had every right to be scared and afraid of my safety. She was at our local Walmart and the conversations were very dower to say the least. She mentioned to the clerk as she was checking out that I was over in France and that she was very worried and concerned for me. The woman looked at my mother and comforted her and then took out a picture of Saint Christopher, as she was a Catholic, and handed it to my mom saying that Saint Christopher would offer her the peace and comfort she needed during this time for me being abroad. My mother was touched at being offered what was the offer of faith from a woman she didn't know nor did they share the same faith. My mother still has that picture of Saint Christopher to remind her that faith and love can come from all people. A time may come that an Evengelical may comfort or offer aid to you when you least expect it. They are our Brothers and our Sisters as well.
  25. Markets are fun. I've never been to China but do wish I could go there someday. I've been to France though as a study abroad student and the open markets are also fun. The most intresting thing was seeing live rabbits and chickens. My American brain was thinking about the rabbits, Oh it's a pet. lol
