  1. Well, I don't know too many people who take meat breaks every 15 minutes, or have to have that big slab of meat in the morning or they are just super cranky. For health, we definitely need to eat better, but our mood and our attitude usually doesn't depend on it. Now, I am diabetic, and I get really cranky around 3:30 PM if I don't have a little snack, so for me, I have to plan my meals a little more than most people, and I have to watch what I eat. So for me, food is a little like smoking or coffee, because it affects my mood. Hopefully, if we learn to avoid coffee, tea, tobacco, and alcohol, we won't have to deal with such mood swings, because we know people do get addicted and will be dependent on them. I would love to not be diabetic and not have to watch what I eat. I am glad I never smoked (for example) so I don't have that added burden.
  2. I have been gone too long. LOL Already exists, and is quite popular here in SoCal. Maid Service, Cleaning Services by MOLLY MAID
  3. Yes, there are 4 temples within an hour and a half from me, but I am near the Newport Beach temple, with the LA Temple an hour North, the San Diego Temple an hour South and the Redlands temple an hour inland. So, my point is, we do have a large LDS population. I work 20 minutes from my home, and pass several chapels on the way. We have a lot of Mormons here. So why not have more bookstores. What is odd is the Deseret book is not even near any of the temples. It is pretty isolated. I know there is a Seagull Bookdstore near the LA Temple, and there is probably something in San Diego near that temple but otherwise, that's it. Kinda sad really. I know bookstores are dying because of the internet, but I still like them better. I like to browse. I would even love a non-denominational multi-faith store, and I could see it with some, since most Christian bookstores I go to are not hostile to the Church, although some are, they are rare here. I wonder if such a store would survive the hostility against opposing faiths?
  4. I think this debate can be settled by two of the thirteen Articles of Faith (emphasis mine). 4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. 5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. (A reminder. The Articles of Faith are scripture.)
  5. I feel so blessed that a temple was built in Newport Beach just a few minutes drive from me (even closer to me than the SL Temple was when I lived in SLC). So, why do I have to trek all the way to the city of Orange to go to Deseret Book. Why aren't there more LDS Bookstores here? There are several Christian bookstores scattered around, and I know there is a fairly substantial LDS population here that is growing, particularly in South OC, but that one little Deseret Book is still the only bookstore in the area.
  6. If you want to use the busy bee theme, think of lots of synonyms. bee buzz hive swarm stinger bumble honey. How about something like "Honey Swarm Cleaners". It invokes a sweetness as well as a whirlwind of action. And it's unique enough, especially if you add the "Cleaners" to the end, that it will not be trademarked. If it is trademarked, change it to "Honey Swarm Housekeeping" or something unique enough to be trademarked. You could even use "Busy Bee Cleaners" as long as any other trademark of Busy Bee isn't in the house cleaning genre.
  7. You may very well be exempt, if you are not having an "increase" then you pay no tithing. Missionaries, for example do not pay tithing because they are not being paid for their services. If you have a part time job, or even if you get a birthday check from grandma, those are increases and should be tithed. Although some see that as extreme. When you are making 70k a year and you are tithing a $20 check, it seems a little nit picky. But for you, right now, it may not be. As to loose change, technically you were the one who lost the change in the first place, so it's not really an increase, but rather a return of a loss. So, I wouldn't worry about it. You don't need to double tithe, just because you found money that you had hidden away somewhere. And you don't need to back tithe. Just do your best going forward.
  8. Read "The Miracle of Forgiveness" by Spencer W. Kimball.
  9. I guess I would be more concerned about the story. Is it about good uplifting things. From my little experience with Anime, a lot of it is about exploitation and abuse of women.
  10. It's funny how the white shirt has become a symbol of piety, all because it is the required attire for missionaries and a symbolic color for baptism. I think we sometimes need to be reminded that such rules and policies have a purpose, but when self righteousness supersedes purpse, there is a problem. I am reminded that the rosary was once a simple tool for remembering to pray, and that incense was used to make the church smell good. Even a Moroni-less temple (of which there are a handful) is still a House of the Lord. I am not knocking those who see those items as holy and a necessary liturgy, but we should beware of making a white shirt a symbol of righteousness. It is no more or less holy for Sunday worship than a blue, black or plaid shirt. As to cartoon boobies, they should be avoided if used for (pardon the pun) titillation.
  11. I think the British connection comes more from the syndication of foreign shows. _____'s got talent is playing in several countries. Many reality shows, like Big Brother, Pop Idol (American Idol), Who want's to be a millionaire. Deal or No Deal all came from other countries. So when they come to the US, they sometimes get the British hosts.
  12. As long as it doesn't run. No one wants to be baptized in a purple pool, or come out wearing a formerly white, but now pink jumpsuit.
  13. You cannot do temple work without the family's permission, since he is not a relative. And there is some friction with Mormons doing temple work for Jews, so it may not be easy to do work for him. But you can pray for him for now. He can still accept the Gospel in the next life, and if there were chemical or mental issues that caused depression, those issues are not with him.
  14. This refers to the covenant of sealing parents to children. If we are born in the covenant, we have been born to parents already sealed, and our sealing to them is automatic. If we have children without a temple marriage, those children must be sealed in covenant in the temple. So, the temple marriage has effects on future posterity, without the need of a sealing covenant ceremony placed on the children.
  15. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report, we seek after these things... That goes for other religious traditions. But I think it goes more to practices than theology. We can adopt the good aspects of other faiths without compromising truth.
  16. If you want a song that will make you money, write a Christmas song. Even if it sucks, people will play it for years to come.
  17. Hey, that looks just like my driver's license picture!
  18. Congrats! I love the toes picture, and how you want to connect to your baptism forever. Just remember, that the sacrament is that connection, and you can renew that peace every Sunday!
  19. “The Lord hath set the bow in the cloud for a sign that while it shall be seen, seed time and harvest, summer and winter shall not fail; but when it shall disappear, woe to that generation, for behold the end cometh quickly (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 305).” A later, fuller treatment of the matter by the prophet reads: “I have asked the Lord concerning His coming; and while asking the Lord, he gave a sign and said, ‘In the days of Noah I set a bow in the heavens as a sign and token that in any year that the bow should be seen the Lord would not come; but there should be seed time and harvest during that year: but whenever you see the bow withdrawn, it shall be a token that there shall be famine, pestilence, and great distress among the nations, and that the coming of the Messiah is not far distant.’ “But I will take the responsibility upon myself to prophesy in the name of the Lord, that Christ will not come this year…for we have seen the bow…Brethren, when you go home, write it down, that it may be remembered (Teachings, pg. 340-41).”
  20. And we also know that when two people of different races procreate, the offspring of that union takes on attributes of both parents. To a tribal society, this could easily be interpreted as a curse, particularly if the culture looks negatively on such intermingling.
  21. Fry sauce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia This is funny. We just got back from a trip to Utah and had to stock up on the Fry Sauce. They have no concept of it here in California.
  22. One advantage to being baptized is that you will be given the gift of the Holy Ghost. Right now you are feeling his influence here and there. After baptism, at your confirmation you will be given the greatest advantage you have have in this life, which is to have that guiding light with you always. It is real, and you will know the difference, and I think you really need it. Don't worry about being perfect, or trying to live up to your commitments. That will come, and you may fall, but having that gift is far more important than worrying about not measuring up. I urge you to call the missionaries today, and set up an appointment for baptism, as soon as possible, and I mean it. Don't wait a week or a month. You know the gospel enough that they have done their work teaching you. Just do it. You will not regret it.
  23. Very few people in the history of the world will be put in a position that you describe. In fact, it is so rare that the few examples we have of it are well known. In the scenarios you have suggested, I can only think of one that fits any of them, and that is of Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac. Of course, you could also apply the same logic to Jesus Christ himself. God had the power to save him. Why didn't he? Did God kill his own son? So, this kind of question is really akin to the age old question of "Why do good things happen to bad people?" Those who have faith know there is a purpose for everything. Those who don't use it as an excuse to reject God and faith.
  24. I live in a single family home, but it is surrounded by condos, and sometimes the new neighbors don't realize their voices carry from their patio right to my bedroom window. They aren't talking loudly, but I can hear every word clearly. Once I let them know I could hear their conversations, they toned it down. We also have new neighbors who just bought a condo, and are apparently trying to flip it, so they are doing construction at all hours of the night. That took a couple police visits to get them to stop. You just need to be polite, and make sure you know your neighbors so they can back you up. I do like the idea of cutting power though. :)
