  1. It isn't the cough that carries you off. It's the coffin they carry you off in. -- Ogden Nash
  2. I just saw that Liberty Park is also doing a live nativity. It's free too. We're doing Utah on a budget. Is Heritage Park worth the cost?
  3. Two wrongs don't make a right, and calling it a bloodless revolution is simply false. Do the ends justify the means. I don't think so. You, apparently do. And congratulations, once again the Republicans are blamed once again. Amazing how that happens.
  4. Bloodless revolution? You need to review history. Read this, and tell me if they have the right. Necklacing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The details are horrific. Now remember, we as a church are still lambasted for Mountain Meadows Massacre 150 years later. This was only 30 years ago, and about 1000 times more violent and extreme. Do you honestly believe this was necessary? More details you never heard if you are under 30. “Saint†Mandela? Not So Fast!
  5. Does the end justify the means? His organization did unspeakable acts of violence, murdering hundreds of people monthly, and he was an avowed communist. He was not about equality or freedom. He just happened to usher it in, and rolled with it. Perhaps he truly changed in prison but he did deserve to be there.
  6. A mug with a fun saying or picture. Hot chocolate mix movie tickets (although that might be more than $10 depending). candy or chocolate.
  7. LDS do consecrate temples as holy spaces. I found it interesting that the one temple that fell into antagonistic hands was destroyed completely and entirely by "natural" forces. But Mormons don't consecrate scripture or CTR rings. Burning a Bible or Book of Mormon is disrespectful but not sacrilegious. We do have holy spaces an sacred ground. Temples, graves, and homes. Chapels are also more sacred and respect given to that room in the church building more so than classrooms or the cultural hall/gym where you can have a more casual and secular spirit. Israel was consecrated and dedicated to the returning of the House of Israel (in the 1800s, long before it was made a homeland to the Jews). Every mission is dedicated to the preaching of the gospel.
  8. One thing I have seen with my nephew, is his parents have a very specific bedtime routine. He's 18 months now, but they've been doing for at least a year. They change him into his pjs, and then let him play a bit longer, and then they sing and dance him to his crib. he protests a bit sometimes, but falls asleep right away. This past weekend, Grandma changed him into his pjs around 6 just to get him comfortable and he cried because he thought he was being sent to bed. Routine is key to a baby knowing what's coming and they do get confused if things change too much.
  9. You know, I begged for a trampoline. I never got one.
  10. I have a 6' narrow tree that fit perfectly in the old house which was small. Now I have two story tall vaulted ceilings, and can fit a massive tree. Still the little tree works for now. Those big trees are in the thousands!!! And the cost for the ornaments would be a fortune. I actually sold the ornaments before moving because I didn't want to pack them, and wanted a new theme. This year, we had a big family gathering for Thanksgiving, and all the kids made construction paper chains, and cut out snowflakes. It actually turned out really pretty and quaint. I love it. And it cost me all of $5.
  11. I manage using a variation of the time out method. I criticize, correct, and sometimes reprimand, but I make sure to praise when they did things right after the fact. I do have some who take things personally, but I am one who is looking for a solution, not to point and blame. I have threatened to use shame techniques (calling people out), but I just want the problem solved, and that we all learn from that mistake so we don't repeat it. One technique is to employ the "donutable offense." If someone does something so egregious that it affects the team, they must bring donuts to the team. That is their payment, and once payment is made, no one can lay blame again on that person. All is forgiven and forgotten.
  12. Generally I look at the concept of Dispensationalism. Major prophets restore truth and guide the Lord's Kingdom from their wayward path back on track.
  13. I know that even 20 years later, I can go to my old neighborhood and i will know who lived in every house. The ward was definitely a center of the community growing up. Where the ward boundaries end was where I didn't know people. Some through school, but only those I was friends with. The ward and more specifically the way wards are assigned makes that way.
  14. I served my mission in Boston and we had a singles ward in the city which would have a large potluck after services. We got a lot of homeless people who came to church for the meal. The bishop had a rule that anyone was welcome to the food if they attended church. Let's just say there were some pretty interesting discussions in Priesthood class. It never got out of hand but we almost always had 3 or 4 homeless people at church.
  15. Numbers 21:9 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. The serpent was used to both represent Satan (in the Garden) and Jesus Christ. I think this shows that although the serpents do evil (like tempt Eve or poison men), the savior is the same creature. Jesus Christ is still of the family of man, and so you cannot call all men evil just as you cannot see a serpent as always evil.
  16. Spirits cannot do physical ordinances. Otherwise, we would not need temple work or work for the dead.
  17. I tend to agree with yjacket. The Bill of Rights were not rights to protect the individual, but to protect the states from Federal intervention. Freedom of Religion only meant the Feds couldn't declare a national religion. But states had no such restriction, and in fact many did have state sanctioned religions. From Wikipedia: Also, prayer in school was never a Federal issue because education was a State right. The Civil Rights movement and desegregation got the Feds involved in school related issues, and later the creation of the Dept of Education, and now we have Feds practically taking over the curriculum, let alone the general practice of prayer in schools. Prior to the 1960s, schools could do whatever they wanted. Constitutionally, the current state of affairs would never have been tolerated by the states who demanded the Bill of Rights to restrict the very actions we are discussing.
  18. These are members who build their faith on a foundation of sand, and not a foundation of stone. There are MANY parables about this situation.
  19. The purpose is easy. They needed to do something that required a physical form. Peter, James an John had to lay physical hands on the head of Joseph Smith to restore the keys of the priesthood. As to where they reside. I suppose they could ascend to heaven as Christ did. But they could be on Earth as John and the three Nephites are. Perhaps with one of the lost tribes, in an unseen location or in plain sight.
  20. If he's going to college, use the money as incentive. Give him money according to his grades. If he drops out, no more money. If you stick with it then he will stick with it, but use the carrot more than the stick.
  21. I worry because the usual checks an balances are being remove. The press no longer investigates, but propagandizes. The minority party is losing power to challenge the majority party. And the courts are making decisions based on ideology, and not the rule of law. Obama is unique in that his historic position makes hm more insular to criticism, and he takes full advantage of that fact. But this has been going on for a long time, and both parties are guilty of taking power when they can.
  22. Pergatory.
  23. I thought I had an ear infection but turned out it was my tooth. Entire side of my head throbbed. I was absolutely giddy in the dentists office to know the pain would soon be gone, and I hate dentists. A friend of mine has had zero cavities and probably never will... Urghhh... I think it may be a "good" bacteria and possibly good genetics.
  24. The LDS Godhead and the Trinity are essentially the same. Arguments end up being about semantics, like what's the difference between a person and a being. Ultimately, it's not about the Trinity or the relationship between the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, but what their relationship is with Man. Are we literally in the image of God? Are we the offspring of Deity? Is God of the same species as Man? Can we achieve the same state of being as God. Is our ultimate destiny to become one with God? And what is the nature of our being one with God. So, when one argues that we believe in a different Jesus, I understand they don't really mean that it's because of our interpretation of the Trinity even though it's always presented that way. And it's not really about what is the species of God. It's ultimately about our "heretical" belief that we can literally be gods. All other arguments are red herrings. By the way, this is the exact same argument that Jesus was accused of, and why he was crucified. The reason we don't use the term Trinity, is because God is not limited to three persons. God is much larger than that. But the three we call the Godhead fits very well within Trinitarian definitions.
  25. Completely accurate. but not going to argue against the age old "nuh uh" rebuttal.
