  1. Brigham Young says no. If we are faithful to our religion, when we go into the spirit world, the fallen spirits—Lucifer and the third part of the heavenly hosts that came with him, and the spirits of wicked men who have dwelt upon this earth, the whole of them combined will have no influence over our spirits. Is not that an advantage? Yes. All the rest of the children of men are more or less subject to them, and they are subject to them as they were while here in the flesh (DBY, 379). Here [the faithful] shall be perplexed and hunted by him; but when we go into the spirit world there we are masters over the power of satan, and he cannot afflict us any more, and this is enough for me to know (DNW, 1 Oct. 1856, 3). “There are scores of evil spirits here–spirits of the old Gadianton robbers, some of whom inhabited these mountains, and used to go into the South and afflict the Nephites. There are millions of those spirits in the mountains, and they are ready to make us covetous, if they can; they are ready to lead astray every man and woman that wishes to be a Latter-day Saint. This may seem strange to some of you, but you will see them. As soon as your spirits are unlocked from these tabernacles, you are in the spirit-world, and you will there have to contend against evil spirits as we here have to contend against wicked persons.” [Young, Brigham. Journal of Discourses, 8:344. Jan. 20, 1861---also printed in the Deseret News, March 20, 1861] In the Millenium, satan will have power over the mortals not the resurrected beings. They can sin and fall. Isaiah says: There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.
  2. This is what another poster said about it a while ago. I believe it may have been Volgadden. Genesis 49 Ephraims blessings “Behold, thus saith the Lord: It is a servant in the hands of Christ, who is partly a descendant of Jesse as well as of Ephraim, or of the house of Joseph, on whom there is laid much power. 5 What is the root of Jesse spoken of in the 10th verse of the 11th chapter? 6 Behold, thus saith the Lord, it is a descendant of Jesse, as well as of Joseph, unto whom rightly belongs the priesthood, and the keys of the kingdom, for an ensign, and for the gathering of my people in the last days.(D/C 113:3-6) V. 32 And there shall they fall down and be crowned with glory, even in Zion, by the hands of the servants of the Lord, even the children of Ephraim. 33 And they shall be filled with songs of everlasting joy. D/C 133:32-33 –Crown converts with glory as we gather them in. In the last days, Ephraim’s descendants have the privilege and responsibility to bear the message of the restoration of the gospel to the world and to gather scattered Israel. Encyclopedia or Mormonism He expresses disappointment in Reuben, his first born for bedding Jacob's wife. The tribe of Reuben were probably worst off of all the tribes when it came to the lands of their inheritance, as they were on the desert frontier and were the first to suffer from nomads as well as from the terrain itself. Jacob intensely dislikes the company of his sons Levi and Simeon, who, it seems, were always engaged in some secret combination or another. He curses them for their castration of the nobles of Shechem, which caused their death. They are quite treacherous. As a result, their descendants will have no land of their own. Levi was spread among the various tribes and Simeon was swallowed up in Judah. Judah's greatness stands out against the background of those three brothers. He is made the chief of the tribes, and the mightiest. The lion is a symbol of royal might. Most of these blessings have to do with Christ, but Judah is promised that they will always have a king, until the Savior (Shiloh) comes. Herod's son Archelaus was the last semi-independent ruler of Judah. He reigned when Joseph brought his family out of Egypt. Judah's land will be fertile and the amount of grapes will be so great that they could afford to wash their clothes in wine. A poetic exaggeration, naturaly, but Judah was pretty fertile until the devastation caused by the failed Bar Kochba revolt in 138 AD. The wine made there was very rich, shown by its deep, dark colour, which is what Jacob means by verse 11. Zebulon's territory bordered on the coastal plain of Akko (Acre). Jacob doesn't have much to say to him. The tribe of Issachar will be as complacent as the donkeys bred for carrying heavy loads, who are satisfied with being kept in a pen, as long as they are fed. Issachar as a tribe was very servile and not inclined to fight for their freedom from the Canaanites. Though not stated here, this is contrast to the onager (a wild ***) which was a symbol of fierce stubborness. Dan will judge the whole people, as if they were members of his own tribe. To judge in the oldest sense of the word was to save someone from injustice, be it legal or military. Samson was from Dan. Dan would be a very dangerous tribe, like a snake lying in wait by the roadside, attacking targets much larger than him. The caravans of the kingdom of Jerusalem (in the days before David) were regularly ambushed by Dan. The adder is the shfifon, a snake known for its swift attack. In fact, in Akkadian records, it is a synonym for swift military action. Asher's food and produce would be rich (oil was a synonym for that). They would also produce remarkeably fine oil, of the kind that kings would use at their table. Naphthali's blessing is hard to interpret, because the language in Hebrew isn't very clear. The most likely meaning is that the tribe is like a swift deer, when bringing fine offerings to the temple. The offerings were lambs, of course. Naphtali's territory is very good for herding. I live there. Joseph is like a fertile branch (it is interesting that son originally meant a branch) of a tree planted by a fountain of water. This is especially interesting when we consider what part his tribes play in the gospel. Christ is the fountain of living waters. Compare this to the allegory of the vine during the last supper. His branches run over the wall hides a wordplay in Hebrew, which refers to Joseph's running Egypt. Joseph's enemies will attack him and make his life miserable, but the Lord will strengthen him. I'm sure that this has a lot to do with Joseph Smith, but also with the exodus of the priesthood to Utah. It is interesting that the word translated as mighty meant an ox. The shepherd and the stone are both terms referring to Christ. We know that the everlasting hills and the eternal mountains mean the rockies, but there is also a meaning of endless boundaries, which is interesting considering the growth of the priesthood and the church. They are compared to a crown which shall be on the head of Joseph. Benjamin is the most warlike of the tribes. He is like a wolf who kills enough prey to have much of it left over from breakfast. The tribe of Benjamin were famed as warriors and archers in the ancient world. The Assyrians even had battalions of Benjamites.
  3. I think Alma 34 answers your question 32 For behold, this alife is the time for men to bprepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of cthis life is the day for men to perform their dlabors. 33 And now, as I said unto you before, as ye have had so many awitnesses, therefore, I beseech of you that ye do not bprocrastinate the day of your crepentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the dnight of edarkness wherein there can be no labor performed. 34 Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful acrisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth bpossess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world. 35 For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become asubjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth bseal you his; therefore, the Spirit of the Lord hath withdrawn from you, and hath no place in you, and the devil hath all power over you; and this is the final state of the wicked. "I do not believe in the ideas that we hear sometimes advanced in the world, that it matters but little what men do in this life, if they will but confess Christ at the end of their journey in life, that that is all-sufficient, and that by so doing they will receive their passport into heaven. I denounce this doctrine. It is unscriptural, it is unreasonable, it is untrue, and it will not avail any man, no matter by whom this idea may be advocated; it will prove an utter failure unto men". -Joseph F. Smith, Conference Reports, p. 3, October, 1907 "We should take warning and not wait for the deathbed to repent, as we see the infant taken away by death, so may the youth and middle-aged as well as the infant be suddenly called into eternity. Let this, then, prove as a warning to all not to procrastinate repentance, or wait till a deathbed, for it is the will of God that man should repent and serve Him in health, and in the strength and power of his mind in order to secure His blessing, and not wait until he is called to die." -Joseph Smith, Jr., Documentary History of the Church 4:554, March 20, 1842
  4. Joseph Smith's father--in his capacity as Patriarch of the Church--warned against becoming a "daughter of perdition" through apostasy. (H. Michael Marquardt, comp., Early Patriarchal Blessings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints [salt Lake City: The Smith-Pettit Foundation, 2007], 106). Wilford Woodruff, George Q. Cannon, Apostles (1893) - "That there will also be daughters of perdition there is no doubt in the minds of the brethren" (MH: EX, 795). Joseph F. Smith (Conference Report, April 1916, 3) "The devil knows the Father much better than we. Lucifer, the son of the morning, knows Jesus Christ, the Son of God, much better than we, but in him it is not and will not redound to eternal life; for knowing, he yet rebels; knowing he yet is disobedient; he will not receive the truth; he will not abide in the truth; hence he is Perdition, and there is no salvation for him. The same doctrine applies to me and to you and to all the sons and daughters of God who have judgment and knowledge and are able to reason between cause and effect, and determine the right from the wrong and the good from the evil and who are capable of seeing the light and distinguishing it from the darkness." Melvin J. Ballard, Sermons and Missionary Services of Melvin J. Ballard, 255-57. "[God] has other sons and daughters who do not even attain unto the telestial kingdom. They are sons of perdition out with the devil and his angels, and though the Father has grieved over them, He still has not the power to rescue and save them because He gave them free agency, and they used that in such a manner that they have shut themselves out from His presence. But He is justified. He has performed His full duty by them." Rodney Turner ("The Farewell of Jesus," Studies in Scripture, Vol. 5, endnote #20) "Satan is called perdition. (D&C 76:26.) Therefore, all who yield to his enticings and die in their sins are sons (or daughters) of perdition and will have to suffer in hell for a given length of time. (Moses 7:37-39.) The risen Christ compared Nephite apostates to Judas: 'For they are led away captive by him [satan] even as was the son of perdition; for they will sell me for silver.' (3 Ne. 27:32.) Those Gentiles who deny Christ 'shall become like unto the son of perdition, for whom there was no mercy.' (3 Ne. 29:7.) 'No mercy' means they must bear the full weight of divine justice (the wrath of God or hell) before being saved. They are temporary sons or daughters of perdition as opposed to those who, failing to ever repent, are termed the "filthy still" (D&C 88:35, 102) and are consigned to the fullness of the second death (D&C 29:27-30, 41)." Rodney Turner, "The Prophet Nephi," in Monte S. Nyman and Charles D. Tate, Jr., eds., First Nephi: The Doctrinal Foundation, 90. "Between now and the last judgment, billions of men and women will be transferring their memberships from one church to the other! Those who repent, bow the knee, and confess that Jesus is the Christ will be numbered with the church of the Lamb of God (Mosiah 27:31; D&C 76:110-11). Those who absolutely refuse to repent will remain 'filthy still'; they will retain their memberships in the church of the devil. They are sons and daughters of Perdition, suffering the damnation of the second death. (Alma 12:12-18; D&C 88:35.)"

  7. “Actually, if the full blessings of salvation are to follow, the doctrine of election must operate twice. First, righteous spirits are elected or chosen to come to mortality as heirs of special blessings. Then, they must be called and elected again in this life, an occurrence which takes place when they join the true Church. (D&C 53:1) Finally, in order to reap eternal salvation, they must press forward in obedient devotion to the truth until they make their "calling and election sure" (2 Pet.1), that is, are "sealed up unto eternal life." (D&C 131:5) (Mormon Doctrine, p.216)
  8. Non-LDS scholars tend not to have interest in Book of Mormon history, but there are LDS scholars who do. There is a brief summary of evidences that are put together nicely in DVD format, and can be viewed here: bookmormon's Channel - YouTube Jeff Lindsay does a good job at providing evidences on his site: Mormon Truth and Book of Mormon Evidences: Not Proof, But Indications of Plausibility and the Neal A Maxwell Institute also has great info: Publications - Insights There have been a few non-LDS scholars who have written about BOM evidences, but they have converted to the Church and no longer non-LDS. Father Jordan Vajda, the Goldsmiths, and Keith Crandall to name a few.
  9. I have read what the critics have said and try to stay updated on any new information they produce. BUT, I also do the same for evidence in behalf of the book of Abraham and implore you to do the same. Have you read any modern scholarship in behalf of the book of Abraham? I also got the information about Ritner from Gee himself. Gee was trying to contact him and found him to have -an- office at a prominent anti-Mormon Church.
  10. I believe Dr. Gee makes a strong case, while his "predecessor" has an obvious bone to pick and is employed by anti-Mormons. That should speak volumes. Have you read Dr. Gee's work? Dr. Muhlstein? Dr. Hauglid? They have made some very interesting points that cannot be dismissed by the wave of a hand. Before you dismiss the book of Abraham all together, read up on what modern scholarship is saying about the issue, it may surprise you.
  11. I disagree. DON'T tell him! That is between you and the Lord. What benefit would either one of you get if he knows? What would change? How would telling him that be good for your relationship? It would only hurt him. Believe me. I have been in his shoes and wish I would NEVER have known what happened with my spouses past and would have been content going to my grave not knowing. Sometimes, ignorance is bliss.
  12. Fornication is also a common part of our culture, but does that make it right? Of course not. You can't say because many people are doing it that it is now ok in the sight of God. That is ludicrous. The scriptures and Prophets are very clear about profanity, and that is we are not to use it. Col. 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, dblasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Titus 2:8 Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his atongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain. James 3:2-13 For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. 3Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. 4Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. 5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! 6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. 7For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: 8But the atongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith cursewe men, which are made after the similitude of God. 10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. 11Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? 12Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. 13Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. 1 Peter 1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 1 Peter 3:10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: 1 Cor 15:33 Be not deceived: evil acommunications corrupt good manners. Eph. 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. "the habit…of using vulgarity and profanity…is not only offensive to all well-bred persons, but it is a gross sin in the sight of God, and should not exist among the children of the Latter-day Saints" (MFP 3:112-13). Messages of the First Presidency 5 vols., ed. J. Clark. Salt Lake City, 1965-1975. “ I am sorry that any of us is subjected to profane language, and I plead with you not to use it. I implore you not to say or to do anything of which you cannot be proud.” President Monson April 2011 GC
  13. How much have you read from LDS Egyptologists on the subject? Joseph Smith got many things right which is quite the accomplishment since much of the information wasn't known in Joseph Smiths day. If he only got one thing right, it would be VERY impressive, but how could he get numerous things right? What source is he using to correctly interpret ancient papyrus? Facsimiles aside, the book of Abraham also does a very good job in ancient geography, Egyptian presence, ancient droughts, human sacrifice, word translations, astronomy, Abrahamic traditions, and more. I believe this goes beyond luck and we must ask how this book gets so many things right that just weren't known in JS day. FAIR has a DVD that will be released in a few weeks on the book of Abraham which discusses all of these issues and more. I saw it during lunch at the FAIR conference and think it will answer many of your questions. Obviously you have many other concerns on top of the BOA, but you should realize that there are valid arguments in behalf of the book of Abraham that should be considered. John Gee wrote a brief review on the arguments surrounding the BOA which you can read here: A Guide to the Joseph Smith Papyri by John Gee Hugh Nibley's Abraham in Egypt can be read here: Abraham in Egypt by Hugh W. Nibley and the more recent Astronomy, Papyrus, and Covenant which is a series of essays written by scholars on topics ranging from geocentric view in the BOA to chapter 125 of the book of the dead and facsimile 3. It's a great read. Astronomy, Papyrus, and Covenant by John Gee, and Brian M. Hauglid Of course, the ever popular FAIR wiki discusses the major talking points of the BOA. 15. Why would God create us on this earth and subject us to pain and anguish which comes along with life, and also putting us in the situation with the possibility never being with Him, while knowing that many of His children would be damned forever and not just create us in heaven and bypass the unnecessary loss of millions of souls? What would be the point of creating us here? Why did He not just create us in heaven with Him? Here is a good article on it: Plan of salvation/Premortal existence - FAIRMormon

  19. Do Mormons teach a different gospel than the one taught by Paul? This link has 4-5 responses to that accusation
  20. I made sure to word my post carefully and said "tradition" instead of "I believe". I agree with all the comments that were made about my post, and believe this originated with Joseph Smith (In the days of Peleg...). I'm not going to argue whether he was right or not, but D/C 133: 22-24 says And it shall be a voice as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder, which shall break down the mountains, and the valleys shall not be found. 23He shall command the great deep, and it shall be driven back into the north countries, and the islands shall become one land; 24And the land of Jerusalem and the land of Zion shall be turned back into their own place, and the earth shall be like as it was in the days before it was divided. This correlates a literal definition of "one land" with the earth before it was "divided." Scripturally speaking, it is a possibility. But, I really don't care one way or the other.
  21. According to religious tradition, this was prior to the division of continents when there was only one landmass. This would make a trek to what is now the other side of the earth, much easier.

On 6 December 1832 the Ohio Atlas and Lorain County Gazette published the following remarks and confident predictions: “As a curiosity, we have carefully examined the Golden Bible, and pronounce it not even ‘a cunningly devised fable.’ Every page bears the impress of its human authorship. Though free from vulgar obscenities, it is an absurd collection of dull, stupid and foolishly improbable stories which no person, unless under the influence of powerfully excited feelings, can mistake for truth and inspiration. With its authors, the Book of Mormon cannot survive this generation. The next will remember it, only to smile at the credulity of the present.” It would appear that these commentators were markedly mistaken. In modern times the Book of Mormon has been named as one of the twenty books that changed America and to date it has been translated, either in whole or in part, into more than 100 languages. Millions of Latter-day Saints hold the translator and scribes of the text in high esteem and consider the book to be a scriptural collection of great worth.
