  1. If you want your commentary from an LDS perspective, I find the Seminary and Institute student manuals quite helpful, and they're inexpensive, either in hard copy or on a CD of PDF files (that CD will get you all the current manuals for less than $5 US). See ldscatalog.com.
  2. Hmmm, guess my DH didn't know that in our courting days.
  3. Just about every police officer I've ever dealt with has been anywhere from coolly polite to very nice. I've even been on social terms with police officers in wards I was in. Of course, I don't throw screaming rants pretending to read the officer's mind when he's doing his job, I'm polite and cooperative. Since the worst legal issues I've ever had were traffic, NBD. Funny story about cops in the ward: in one ward, our bishop and one of his counselors were both county sheriff's deputies, and the EQ president was a CHP trooper (and DH's HT companion, while his wife was my VT. The two families were pretty friendly). I was at one point ward librarian, and I'm given to understand that temperamental copiers are standard in ward libraries. One day, I was having a really rotten time with the copier, which was jamming about every time I looked at it funny, and Brother CHP cruised into the library. I semi-jokingly asked him if he had his gun with him. Bishop Deputy overheard this and commented, "I've seen Brother CHP shoot. The copier is safe". (Everyone present laughed.)
  4. The Book of Mormon can also be downloaded in MP3 format free on the Church's own site. I'd supply a link, but that site's down just now. Go to www.lds.org once it's up, then I believe the sequence is Gospel Library, Audio.
  5. I've always liked the stuff, long before I converted.
  6. Congratulations, Dad! Hope Mom and baby are doing well. We expect pictures soon.
  7. Depends on what you're up against. Could be hidden in a file that would get backed up. Must call this thread to my husband's attention, since he knows more than I do about this subject.
  8. Hey, I like lime jello! (Converted at 24, BTW.)
  9. Uh, deep breath here? I don't think anyone thinks it's wrong to say to a friend or relative who's having some difficulty "have you asked for a blessing?" or "maybe you should get a blessing". The problem comes when someone who does not have stewardship over the person in need says "you're getting a blessing" in violation of that person's agency to choose to make the request for himself/herself.
  10. Speaking of teaching activities, why not give the young men cooking lessons or teach young women to do minor basic repairs? You know, the kinds of life skills both sexes need. I understand my BIL was very popular with missionary companions because he's a pretty good cook.
  11. I've been known to offer a suggestion to someone who seemed in need that he/she should consider requesting a blessing, but would not make that request for that person (unless he/she was incapacitated AND within my stewardship).
  12. I'm quite sure there are JUSTIFIED exceptions for natural processes that can't be put on hold (livestock care, crops, childbirth, etc.), but when you (generic you, not a specific individual) start claiming you're the exception to ALL guidance and simply dismiss it with rationalizations about how special you are that it's OK to shop or immerse yourself in worldly recreation on the Lord's day, don't you think there's maybe a pride or rebellion problem there? I really wonder how many "faithful" members, even here, actually believe the Lord chooses and inspires the leaders of the Church?
  13. That depends on whether you trust the Lord's wisdom or think you know better than He does (as so many, even "faithful" members, apparently do, judging by what I see around me).I have a bit of a caffeinated soft drink thing myself. My bishop and stake president both thought I was still OK for a Temple recommend, but both gently suggested it might be well to cut that down or out altogether, and I'm sure they're right, it's just a question of my capacity at this point (I do plan to work on that). Frankly, as dependent as we're becoming as a society on caffeine (and the WoW does discourage habit-forming harmful substances), the Temple qualification may well be expanded by the Lord to cover that (and no, unlike a lot of "intellectual" LDS, I do not believe that Church policies are the whims of the men in leadership, I KNOW they are from the Lord). If that happens, I'll suck it up and comply with the Lord's commands.
  14. Yipe! Thanks for reminding me to get that card in the mail! Update: done.
  15. I really don't run into any trouble with that I can't blame on the laptop's touchpad, or a boggy system. Got plenty of RAM?
  16. [whimper] Two more that I do!
  17. I do that too! This thread is really starting to scare me!
  18. For me, the sparkly background on the front page made it hard to read, but after clicking the ENTER link, all is well.
  19. I got a kick out of that one, too. Weddings are supposed to be a joyful occasion, after all, and I couldn't help enjoying the exuberance. I'll assume that once the ceremony began, things got appropriately dignified for such a solemn event.
  20. The way this is written makes it sound like kids with parents who both work (or single parents) who don't have time to be in the classroom, and whose parent(s) can't afford to be sending in supplies all the time, are going to pretty much be ignored.
  21. So rejecting counsel from the Lord's spokesmen is just dandy?
  22. I just checked (since I've used Firefox for that purpose), and the system requirements say Firefox 2.0 or later will work.
  23. Even if that is coming from the leaders of the Church? Guys we can assume to be spiritually in tune and receiving inspiration?
  24. Dravin, I think you can get a Firefox add-on to do just about everything but the dishes. Try the add-on listing.
