  1. Folk Prophet this is the part of your statement that raises my defenses for myself and for other families, too. "For the great majority of people, I expect, the declaration that they want one less hour of church so they can spend time with their families (or "rest") is garbage." You seem to be seeing life for every member of the church exactly like it is for you. Maybe you do have the luxury of doing all those fun things with your family on a Saturday and perhaps being with your family for an extra hour on a Sunday is just ho hum- more of the same. There are so many situations in which that extra hour actually would make the difference of seeing their family or not. Of feeling rested or not. Think of extended families who don't live in the same ward or even the same city. That one hour might facilitate visits that couldn't happen otherwise. Maybe you have someone who works a Sunday job ( service and emergency people rarely get all their Sunday's off) and it might just mean that that one extra hour means they would get to eat dinner together before Dad has to leave to go work in the ER. When we moved into this ward our bishop came to visit us on Sun evening at about 7:30. He hadn't been home for dinner yet. The way you describe your solution is so oversimplified and generalized. Until you have walked in " the great majority of people's" shoes, you have no idea if what they say is garbage or not.
  2. Explain your point again then because I'm not getting it.
  3. But why is it your business to even comment on that? How do you know what that person's life is like? There might be quadzillion responsibilities that person has and they are doing the best they can. I'm not trying to goad you into an argument or anything, I just feel like this thread has become about judging each other and how they parent, or use their time or run their personal lives. If you're satisfied with the way you are running your own life, that's great. But there are many perfectly good ways to parent and seriously, some babies need definite nap times, some people are tired on Sundays because they have to work their fannies off all week just to survive. Some people have to make a huge ginormous effort to even get out of bed, let alone dress in "Sunday best" and get themselves to church where they are super uncomfortable for a variety of reasons. It's an offering of love and dedication to the Lord of their hearts to make it for the Sacrament and that's all. I'm sure whatever amount of time they can spend at the church on Sundays will be noted and appreciated by the Lord. It's between them and Him.
  4. Ok here is our schedule: Husband gets up at 5:45 AM on Sundays. Bishopric meetings from 6:30 til church starts. I get kids to church by 9:00 They are teenagers who have been getting up at 4:45 ALL WEEK for early morning seminary and 6:00 or earlier on Sat. to catch a bus for their cross country meets. 9 AM on Sunday is still rough because they are so flipping tired!! 3 hours of church- two of those hours in which they have the same lesson repeated twice because SS and the youth are on the same lesson schedules. (Yawn!!) Then since our ward is so spread out, at least 2-3 Sundays a month there are extra meetings after church- BYC, YW Presidency meetings or YW class presidency meetings. YOu get some energetic talkers in those meetings and they go on till 1:30 some weeks. My husband doesn't usually get home till 2:00 most Sundays after interviews, working out kinks and driving 20 min away to deposit tithing money in the bank. We are all EXHAUSTED on Sundays and need a nap. Sometimes we get it, sometimes not depending on who is coming for dinner or how many of our kids we skype Sun afternoon. Or who in the wards needs us. That extra hour isn't about sports or even family time. It's about SANITY!! Throw a couple anxiety disorders in the mix and Sunday is not a day of rest. It's a day of angst and family separation and just wishing for a one hour church meeting where we can really worship and reconnect with peace and quiet. Instead, the "Church" has made our Sundays long, drawn out and full of busywork that frankly has nothing to do with our ultimate goal of meeting our Heavenly Father again and reaching the Celestial Kingdom.
  5. Anatess...every person on this earth has a different temperament. Some adapt to change. Some don't. There are some kids who get cranky at church Every. Week!! and it is disruptive to the rest of the ward and exhausting for the parents. For those families, it's probably better to take the sacrament and then go home with said cranky child. I've don'e this on occasion and encouraged my children to do the same with their kids if need be. Life is not so black and white as you call it. Perhaps there's something genetic in your clan that makes them easier going and more adaptable. But it doesn't make someone else a bad parent or have an ineffective parenting style if their kids don't adjust. I know that's not what you said but it certainly reads that way.
  6. Wow! Just wow!! So this person should just snap their fingers and get a higher paying job for fewer hours worked? Or better yet become independently wealthy so they don't have to work. Then they wouldn't be so tired on Sundays. 🙄 Yes " that's just you" and pretty uppity thing to say.
  7. That is a really incredibly judgemental thing to say. How in the world do you know what other people are going to do with that hour or what their needs and intentions for the Sabbath are?? It is strictly between the Lord and the individual or the family.
  8. OK JAG...changing directions about this whole fiasco that is blowing my mind. If this woman can demand an FBI investigation of Kavanaugh, what about an FBI investigation of her? How do we know her claims are credible or that SHE is who she says she is? How did we get to a point where just anybody can make claims like this out of the blue and totally derail the process? Is anyone checking out all her conversations and bank accounts to make sure she isn't a pawn? Seriously, this thing is outrageous. Another question- Some presidents were elected into office as known womanizers. Do you believe the office of POTUS less important than SCOTUS in regards to these kinds of things? Why is SCOTUS more sacred? And how did Clarence Thomas get voted in with his shady past?
  9. Ha! I've been reading that forum and didn't even realize that's what it was.
  10. Her assertion (at least her repressed memory in resurfaced form) is that both young men in the room were extremely drunk. So I would take your statement back a few steps and say that many teenage boys drink alcohol which, taken alone is definitelyin the category of "stupid teenage boy behavior". Yes, it's illegal (so is driving over the speed limit and lighting certain kinds of firecrackers and probably throwing eggs and pizza at cars and doing donuts in a snowy parking lot) but does not compare in severity of offense to attempted rape. And if indeed Kavanaugh did drink a lot in high school, maybe that's why he claims he never did it. Because he doesn't remember what he did while drunk. So does an alcohol impaired young man groping and clumsily trying to take a swim suit off a girl merit the same kind of punishment as a sober young man doing this kind of thing? So let's say Kavanaugh confesses to drinking too much during high school. Would an investigation into his current drinking habits be appropriate? He says he would never/ has never assaulted a woman ( that he can remember). And at what point does the committee say, "That was then and it hasn't happened since so he is indeed qualified to be on the Supreme Court." Can they ever be that forgiving? Or are people plagued for the rest of their lives and disqualified for dumb stuff they did in high school? And your #2 point- Has the GOP become numb or has the bar for sexual assault been raised incredibly high over the last year or so? Because I can definitely remember a few experiences in my youth that I could now claim were sexual assaults according to today's standards, but that seemed like harmless playfulness back then. And to be perfectly clear, I was never groped or directly touched in places I shouldn't have been but it came awfully close while rough housing in a swimming pool once or twice and a during a playful wrestling match a time or two. ( I didn't marry any of those young men.)
  11. I've listened to lots of opinions on whether this is important or not. Accuser wants an FBI investigation. What would they be investigating? Whether it happened or not? And how is that info going to be useful? I think the most important thing that no one seems to be pointing out is that now that Kavanaugh has categorically denied it, but it really did happen, then his current honesty should be under the microscope. Whether it happened or not seems to be of little importance to how Kavanaugh would do his job in 2018. He was a teenager at the time and teens do stupid things. Some want to simply throw him out at the very vague suggestion that he may have been involved in this long ago incident. Seriously? There is a statute of limitations that would prevent him ever being put in jail. there should be a statute of limitations that prevents this kind of thing ever tangling up a Supreme Court Judge vote. That way Kavanaugh would have been free to just say, ya, I was a dumb kid back then. I"m sorry it happened. But I'm not that kid any more. All the other FBI investigations have shown me to be worthy of this position. Other thoughts?
  12. What is CAF? I looked it up and got Confederation of African Football. 😀
  13. I still don't understand the supposition that surrendering to secular law guarantees the soul being lost. How does anyone know that?
  14. They used to put out yearly manuals for FHE. Maybe that's what it's about.
  15. I like your suggestions. And cliquehub.com ...true dat!
  16. Here's to fervently hoping they do this!! And early morning seminary, too!!
  17. Has anyone heard of Sniglets? If not google it. They are the best!! Words you never knew you needed. One of my favorites is "rignition: the act of starting a car that's already running." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sniglet https://www.amazon.com/Sniglets-SnigLit-Doesnt-Appear-Dictionary/dp/0020125305/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1537280395&sr=8-1&keywords=sniglets+book
  18. Utah, too. https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900031994/16-catholic-priests-in-utah-accused-of-sex-abuse-since-1990-bishop-says.html
  19. NO argument from me about Canon Law being sufficient IF it's actually applied. The problem we're hearing is that in many cases it hasn't been applied when it should have been. Hence the "cover up". Perhaps some priests were removed for awhile, but were put back in place before they were ready. Others weren't pulled out of service at all when they should have been. Oh yes, they were "moved" but not made to do the work to reform like they should have. When anyone says, "the Catholic Church hasn't protected children" it obviously doesn't mean every leader in the church is at fault. But the Pope himself said this, "With shame and repentance, we acknowledge as an ecclesial community that we were not where we should have been, that we did not act in a timely manner, realizing the magnitude and the gravity of the damage done to so many lives," he writes. "We showed no care for the little ones; we abandoned them." It's not hatemongering to simply repeat what the Pope said.
  20. I don't believe she has that right to privacy after what she has done. She has proven to be a menace and it behooves people to be aware of her and her past. That being said, if she is truly a victim she deserves justice, too.
  21. I'm not too worried about it. I don't think he won't go unpunished if that's what needs to happen. Obviously all the authorities, from his ward all the way up to the Prophet, plus law enforcement and the courts know about this. Since the statute of limitations is passed and the case dismissed, now it's between Bro. Bishop, his stake leaders and the Lord.
  22. Oh, I got the impression she was in your mission, too. Not just the MTC. It reminds me of a disfunctional companion I had on my mission. She was cute and a flirt with men, but nothing this bad. Even that much was awkward to deal with.
  23. I guess we'll see. I think this is only the beginning. There are now 5 other states looking into this problem. I wouldn't be surprised to see many more states join the investigation, too. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/06/nyregion/catholic-sex-abuse.html Could have just been some bad apples in Pennsylvania or it could be even more widespread. If it is, there has to be something identifiable behind it. I'm no statistician but it just feels like there are way more offenders in this group of men than one would find in a random sampling of all men across the country. Here is a really interesting homily written by a priest. It's very informative and sheds light on what may be going on. Not pedophiles so much as homosexuals and communists. Go ahead and read this. Not my words but his 👇. https://www.romancatholicman.com/fr-robert-altiers-truthful-homily-about-the-current-crisis-in-the-church/
  24. So I've burned out on pumpkin spice. I used to be interested in it but since it's shown up in so many forms lately from Cheerios to Mrs. Meyers cleaner, I'm sick of it. I only like it in one or two forms- pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving and perhaps pumpkin bread or ginger snaps now and then. I've never had it in a drink and don't think I will even try it. I got some Trader Joes ice cream one time that had the flavor in it and almost gagged. Since then, it's a no for me. I don't mind the smell in candles though.
