  1. Don't make me go dig up some obscure slang translations
  2. This is why I prefer street festivals. Ideally, free admission ones. Unfortunately, my chicken-finding friend moved away. She could locate a fried chicken place in an unfamiliar area a quarter mile away, downwind. When a sandwich at the festival vendors is $9, it's really handy to have someone with a psychic ability to tell you that there's a Chicken Express four blocks west and a block north, with a special on the large chicken tender platter. Between that and the Baptist church on the edge of town offering free parking and a shuttle bus to a block from the main stage, not counting gas there and back and the water and sodas we brought, I don't think we completely wiped out a $20 on good entertainment from 11AM to 10PM.
  3. Think of it as a cross between a gameboard and a dollhouse.
  4. AFAIK, most schools have always had a policy of not letting parents make special arrangements like that on school sponsored trips. Up until now, it was probably a good thing, since it kept them from having any control over whether their precious Aryan snowflake got roomed with an Asian, a Colombian and a Jordanian on the field trip, where she might start to see other races as human. Of course; the less morality there is, the more people will be government dependent either through regular handouts or incarceration.
  5. Well, there goes her chance at a date with Bear Grylls.
  6. About time; this week marks the 6th time I've seen the 200 year flood plain on the Bosque under several feet of water. I'll be 40 next week, not 1200.
  7. Well, if the Reform Party wins local elections there, we'll know why.
  8. The state that couldn't work paper ballots? Do they even notice the cops have military gear?
  9. Actually, it does, but not that much with only 10-12 feet of elevation. Think about where a miss or overpenetrating bullet will go. Would have been much better to have that shooter on the roof of a 2 story or taller building. As for cops taking credit for killings, Lon Horiuchi's product endorsements for HS Precision come screaming to mind as an extreme example.
  10. So, basically, for prisonchaplain, life isn't just a game, it's a long, boring game that you're supposed to wear silly looking pants for.
  11. Or maybe sufficiently primitive magic just looks a lot like technology.
  12. IMO, they tried to make it taste like a cigarette, but they tried to make it taste like what a cigarette tastes like to a non smoker. Thus they came up with something that was way too sulfurous. That, or they used whatever tongueless idiot really Can't Believe It's Not Butter. Same guy who develops diet drinks that "taste just like the real thing" apparently.
  13. You know that line from Nietzche about looking too long into the abyss? I'm starting to think you are the abyss. And yes, I've run the cube on various women. It's a pick-up artist favorite for eliminating the need to do a cold read. Ladies, if you want to mess with a pick up artist, the above answers should have him backing slowly out of the room.
  14. There's something wrong with anywhere there's not a Whataburger.
  15. Same things that happened with laptop batteries for years, and have been happening with various toys off and on. Unregulated lithium batteries either charged wrong or discharged too fast. Solution is the same for all the products; avoid junk components.
  16. Maybe you're not watching the right sports. Some of our local Pentecostals treat these the way most people treat the Super Bowl, complete with annual pilgrimage to various ones.
  17. Yeah; this is pretty high on my "doesn't affect how I live my life at all, and I'm sure instructions will be provided if/when it becomes relevant" list.
  18. The other rule of thumb I'd like to toss in here is simply if one makes a habit of being late, one should find a line of work that isn't dependent on making appointments with clients.
  19. Do you also make a habit of approaching random strangers in cars to show them pictures of wreck victims?
  20. Never seen such healthy green bare dirt. Or is this a different Lilburn and Panthea Boggs? Such common names, after all.
  21. Not a big fan of watching most televised sports. I do enjoy seeing some sports live or participating, though. What I don't get, though, is the guys who say social dancing isn't manly, then go watch a bunch of guys on TV in shiny capris pat each other's butts for a few hours before they head off to shower together. Feels much more manly to me to have a woman in my arms.
  22. Peacetime law enforcement. As opposed to open warfare.
  23. Ideally, yes, but that's still two more rounds that you would otherwise have had to make a conscious decision to fire. Also, the natural reaction in a stressful situation is to tense up the hand. (Hence the whole "finger off the trigger until the sights are on target" rule.) With SA, that's one shot. With FA, it turns into an uncontrolled mag dump.
  24. The only external difference would be the number of positions on the fire mode selector. Even then, it's not uncommon to have the FA marking stamped on a SA rifle. An exceptionally rare purpose outside of a war zone. Might as well argue for a few A-10s while you're at it because they just might come in handy someday. So what are those things still clamped into holders in most of the patrol cars around here? Broomsticks in case of a Quidditch riot? There's a lot more than just buckshot that can be stuffed through a 12ga. (Or in this case, a 10ga.) Buckshot, slugs, beanbags, rubber buck, rubber slugs, etc. Again, peacetime LE isn't limited to hardball. Barnes makes some very good .30 cal bullets that, in my testing, didn't penetrate any more than .223 soft point. OTOH, anything will overpenetrate air. If you're hitting the target, 8 rounds is more than enough. (Historic evidence suggests 3 is plenty.) If you can miss fast enough and often enough to win, you could be making a fortune teaching that technique. Look at the Empire State Building shooting a few years ago; two cops fired 16 rounds at one suspect and managed to injure nine bystanders in the process, three with direct hits and the other six with ricochets and shrapnel.
