Elder Oaks Tackles a Hard Hitting Question
LDSGator replied to person0's topic in General Discussion
I’ve gotten the same sort of things said to me. Evangelicals think I’m going to Hell because I accept the BOM as scripture and some people on the left think I’m crazy for believing in a God at all. I sort of like it, to be honest. People telling me I’m going to Hell makes me giggle because it’s so unoriginal. Heard it 10,000 times before. -

I totally disagree with that. No one would invade anyone and Cali and Texas wouldn’t go to war. If anything, it would be similar to (but no, not identical) Brexit. The UK hasn’t bombed France yet. -

I never thought about that. Was the church that well known in Europe/the Pacific at that time? -

No, not at all. Like I’ve said here many times, I can’t imagine any of the LDS conservatives here ( @Vort @mirkwood @Anddenex @Just_A_Guy oryourself) treating an LGBTQ+ member poorly. So no, that’s not what I meant. That’s what I meant as well. -

It is, but it’s clear to all of us you are struggling with how to treat the LGBTQ+ members. You’ve even admitted it. -

That seldom happens. In most cases it’s much more fun to admonish someone publicly because everyone can then bask in how holy and righteous I am. That’s partially why people admonish in public and almost never take you aside and talk to you. No one would see them doing that and they don’t really care about you at all in the end. that said I don’t think that’s applicable here. I don’t get those vibes at all from @person0 -

Okay. Best of luck you to you with this. It’s obviously something you are struggling with. 😞 -

Exactly. A cold truce is the best we can hope for. -

Understand, but how do you know they don’t like you? Have you had other encounters? Also, if you don’t have other things in common and don’t need to have a “working relationship” with the person, let them go their way and you go yours. Let the church leadership deal with them if they break rules. -

Have you tried talking to people who you clash with about things other than what you clash with? Ie-football? Bird watching? Anything but what your differences are? You don’t have to hang out and play video games together but it might be a nice place to start. Just “Hey, Tom. You into football?” -

Well, you said it. Why? Maybe both sides would be much happier away from one another? -

Do you think it’s time for a national red state/blue state divorce? -

Yup, they sure do. Nor did I ever imply otherwise. Do you think the right wing has a playbook? -

More social insight: if you automatically assume every leftist won’t respect your beliefs, you’ll carry a massive chip on your shoulder and act rude to them because you think you know how’ll they act. Which is fine, no one is forcing anyone to be polite. Again though, you give up your right to whine and play victim. If you assume things about them, they can assume things about you. You also lose the right to complain if someone uses the same tone against you that you use to them. -

I get it too, but if you don’t respect their pronouns/beliefs, you open the door for them not to respect your beliefs either. If you can’t be polite to one another it’s probably best to just ignore each other so you don’t cause drama or make things uncomfortable for everyone. -
Oh, agree 100%. I view it like an event promoter selling tickets. No matter how slow the tickets are selling, you need to act like everyone is going and things are peachy keen.

At Bucc-ee’s there was a ton of Bud Light available. Then, I looked in the beer cooler and saw a lot of Coors, Modelo, and other beers available too. Maybe these viral pictures of unsold Bud Light are misleading?

That’s what I’ve been told before as well. -
Oh, it’s a huge win for the right. I can’t think of another boycott that caused this amount of damage to a company. That said, I still think they’ll survive this long term.

You lost me. Didn’t He say “Do unto others as you would have done to you?” -
The right loves alarmism, this is no different. Sure, Bud is damaged now. No argument there. But will they (and AB) still be around in ten years? You betcha. Same with DnD.

My nephew is obsessed with it too. It’s doing fine.

All great points. In my experience (especially offline in social settings) people will mostly treat you how you treat them. If you make stupid and rude comments about their beliefs or lifestyle, they’ll probably do the same to yours. If you treat them with common courtesy, they’ll treat you the same to. Works most of the time. -
Lol! Welcome back my friend!
