  1. I'm originally from Ohio but I've lived in Texas for over 30 years. Add to the mixture that my parents are from Kentucky so I grew up with my dad saying things like, "It's so windy I saw a chicken lay the same egg 3 times" and "it's so cold I saw two hound dogs trying to jump start a jack rabbit" and you get me. I'm almost impossible to offend but I'm sometimes almost impossible to understand.
  2. It's her front left leg. Still trying to figure out the picture posting thing.....
  3. I am in Texas and the foster dog I've had is now headed to a family in Connecticut. I'm sad for me but really happy for her. Her new family will consist of parents and 3 kids, ages are 12, 14 and 16. They also have a Lab. The even better news is I now have the half lab/half sneaky neighbor dog puppy that had to have her front driver's side leg amputated. I'll probably have her for 2 months before we start looking for a home for her. The problem is that the combination of her puppy smell, her overall puppiness, her missing leg and the fact that she still has stitches and is sore has my maternal instincts all up and in high gear already. I'm going to be a mess in 2 months. I'd like to get her house broken while I have her so my plan is to take her outside every two hours or so and wait for her to go potty and then praise her a lot and give her treats. I'm going to try and figure out how to post a pic because she is completely adorable.
  4. Wow! Me too. It's like we're kindred spirits or sumpthin. Did you know me in the pre?
  5. PETA doesn't think people should have dogs and cats as pets. They believe it's akin to slavery. I believe they are correct in this belief. I am owned by 3 dogs. I have to spend the first hour of my morning taking them for walks and making them their breakfast. During the rest of the day I have to give them massages, feed them again, take them for more walks and if needed, draw their bath water, bathe them, towel them dry and rub their bellies some more. For all of this work I don't receive a dime. In fact I have to pay for their food and any medical bills they accrue. Yep, it's slavery.
  6. Fumbles. Right now, my pet peeve is fumbles.
  7. It's working so well with Lucy that she hasn't had another accident since that 1st morning. She can go 5 hours without going in the house. When we take her out she goes to the bathroom almost immediately. This is a really smart dog.
  8. No, I'm pretty sure it's in South Texas.
  9. I'd go to Aussie land or Finland if it were Zion.
  10. For the last 4 or 5 years we've been having 'Ward Temple Week' twice each year. Of all the members that regularly attend our Sunday meetings, I can say I've seen about 80% of them at the Temple during those weeks.
  11. I would be willing to share Shemar Moore with Pam.
  12. I believe cleanliness is next to impossible.
  13. I carpooled with a guy who belonged to the Church of Christ. His sister had been disfellowshipped which meant they had to shun her even away from church. The only way for her to get back in fellowship was for her to stand before the congregation and tell them her sins and then ask for their forgiveness.
  14. riding a bike white onions or purple onions?
  15. Some of those quotes got me thinking about bugs. If there are animals there will probably be bugs. (((((shudder)))))
  16. Thanks, that's what we've been doing. I leave her crate door open unless we are leaving her alone or at night. She woke me up this morning at 5:30 and I took her outside and we walked around the backyard for about 20 minutes. She peed a little here and there then came in the house and peed really good. Clearly we have some work to do. She hasn't had any problems in the house since this morning as I've been taking her around the block every two hours plus taking her into the back yard every time I take my other dogs out.

  19. Feathertail, I just want to say thank you for this thread, especially the opening post. My 29 year old son has Down Syndrome and is Autistic. You've solidified some things in my head I thought I knew from observing him all these years and you've given me much insight in ways I wouldn't have come up with on my own. I'm overwhelmed by your clarity of thought and your insight. There is something incredibly right and good about you. What you have is not a handicap but a gift. Thank you.
  20. One of our Chihuahuas was kept in a crate from the age of 8 weeks until she was almost 4 years old. Because of this I have never been a big fan of crates. BUT, thanks to folks on this board I decided to give it a try. We brought home our first official foster dog yesterday. She's an 18 month old terrier mix who has been kept outside and pretty much ignored her whole life. Her name is Lucy. The lady at the rescue place has been taking her home at night and putting her in a crate to sleep. Anyway, I got the crate out and Lucy got so excited! She was spayed just yesterday so I wanted to keep her calm but she was in the crate before I could get the doggie pad in it. With the help of my hubby I finally got the pad in and then Lucy on top of it and she is now resting comfortably, on her back with all paws in the air. It's obvious she's feeling very secure. I only have her for two weeks and would love to get her housebroken before she goes to her family. Is that possible? Are their any tricks other than what's on the crate training and ASPCA site?
  21. I was baptized on April Fools Day in 1984. Let's just say I was 8 and move along.
  22. I have good news and bad news. The good news is that we passed the inspection. The bad news is that the head lady from the rescue group has spent the last 2 nights sleeping with our little patient on her chest and now she wants to keep her until the real family happens. &
  23. I have the crates now and am excited for Monday to come. We won't be leaving this little one home at all I think because having just had surgery I'm afraid to. I'll put her in the crate for treat time and to give her petting time and to sleep but the rest of the time she'll be on the couch with me or in the recliner with my hubby. The lady at the rescue place let her sleep in her bed last night.
  24. I don't know how to post pics (I'm e-litterate) but I can pm them to some else and get them posted. Any volunteers?
  25. Okay, I think I know what I need. I'll get a small for future Chihuahuas but for our little amputee I need a big one with a divider Shes a bulldog/lab mix. I just got a phone call from the rescue group and they have a potential forever family already but they won't be able to come get her for a couple of weeks. This family already has a three legged large dog that was injured by a car when it was running wild before it was rescued. Makes me hope they name her lucky because I think they will be perfect for her. Going to the pet store now. Thanks everyone. I feel way more prepared now.
