LDS and KJV-onlyism
mnn727 replied to curtishouse's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
Just try quoting from a non-KJV version in a class and you'll see what the members think about other versions (I did this once). As a convert I just don't get it, why do we put up language barriers to someone reading the Bible? And don't get me wrong here, I was raised on the KJV so it wasn't a stranger to me when I joined th Church. I have always hated the fact that many people think the language is more respectful just because its old. The funny thing is when the KJV was created, it was to bring the Bible to the common people, now the common people find it anywhere from difficult to nearly impossible to understand. It's the one thing I truly dislike in the Church, that many members can't even conceive of using a different version, sadly I suspect that some of the most adament KJV people only open the Bible on Sundays during class. We use the TNIV for daily study in our home but have 5 other version's available. -
From the official Nobel website, not from a outside source, not from specualtion. "the nominations are kept secret for 50 years" It makes no difference if people push for her to be nominated, put up websites promoting her, etc, whether she was actually a nominee or not will not be known for 50 years. Once again, my point was not whether she was worthy, but whether her name and deeds should be used for dirty politics.
-
And I refer you right back to the Nobel site and avoid the speculations in your link.As I said this is a great and heroic lady, but why is it ok to use her life for political reasons? To me it's a disgrace and frankly it disgusts me.

Actually, 'the Church' did not excommunicate him, his bishop did, it was later reversed by the First Presidency. We just had a fireside about him with a BYU professor who wrote a book about him

No I don't believe God is an I dream of jeanie type God, nor do I believe He is a finder of lost keys. To me both idea's are equally absurb. To me; God set this all up to work, what we do with what He set up is up to us.

Funny isn't it that WW2 ended in 1945 and in over 60 years no one ever said anything about her until a certain conservative talk show host made this whole story up to dis Al Gore. Since then its been copied all over the internet by people who want to believe its true, but who never do any actual research to find out. Nobel nominee's are not announced so there is no way of anyone other than the Nobel committee knowing who is in the running from Nomination Facts and Since the winners are chosen in October and announced in December and she died in April of 2008 by the rules of the Nobel committee there is no way she could have received it -- see Process of Nomination and Selection Don't get me wrong, what this lady did was heroic, but why do some people use her bravery for their own political reasons? Being on the internet doesn't mean it is true!

Asteroids Miss Earth; It was a Miracle
mnn727 replied to Hemidakota's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I wouldn't call it a miracle, its science, millions of asteroids hit the earth every year, most burn up in the atmosphere before getting to the surface, a 23 foot asteriod would mostly burn up before hitting the earth, could it have cause a problem? yes, but its certainly not a planet killer. Sorry, but IMHO this article is long on religion and short on (real) science. -
Interesting, I was not aware of that -- another parallel with our religions.Thank you so much for coming here and sharing all of this infomation!!

I have found that in order to have a friend you need to be a friend -- and this translates into the Ward like this 1. if you want someone to shake your hand in the morning and welcome you to Church, then get there early and go around and shake other peoples hands and welcome them - I guarantee that there are people there thinking just like you 2. Participate in classes, read the lesson before hand, and try to come up with one good question or quote in each lesson -- you won't always be able to say it, but you also won't just ne sitting there. 3. Invite some one over, pick another single Mom or a small family about your age with kids about your kids age and invite them over for dinner some Sunday or if you can't afford dinner then desert, my wife and I did this in a ward that we thought was very unfriendly -- seems everyone was just waiting for someone else to do something 4. Become part of the missionary effort in the poor part of the ward. Sad fact is, that SOME rich people will always look down on poorer people, so more poorer people will give you more people with more things in common 5. Never miss your visit teaching and if your Home teachers and visiting teacher don' set appointments on their own, find out who they are and invite them. Make some homemade cookies and send some home with them, do the same with your visit teaching families, make some cookies or cake or bars and leave enough for the family. 6. be sure to attend any ward socials, functions, relief society homemaking meetings, etc -- even if they are not 'your thing' and talk to people while you are there. In general start acting the way that you want to others to act towards you

Questions for the Scientifically Inclined LDS
mnn727 replied to DigitalShadow's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
I do have to correct 1 assumption on your part. Not everything said at G.C. is considered scripture or doctrine -- that is not something we LDS believe. There have been instances where there have been actual corrections given to GC talks, the latest that comes to mind was Elder Nelsons peace talk on the eve of Desert Storm. (frankly he was 100% correct in my opinion but the Church backed away from his stance) Having said that; you can also be assured that anything said was no doubt given much thought and usually adheres to actual doctrine. -

Questions for the Scientifically Inclined LDS
mnn727 replied to DigitalShadow's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Yes through variations and mutations? yes, can those variations and mutations eventually become a new species, yeah (think wolf, dog, fox, etc) If you mean do I believe all animals are descendants of the primordial ooze and single cell creatures that eventually became different species -- then no. I personjally don't. However if it did, it would not contradict my faith. Billions of years billions of years It may be and doesn't contradict our religion at all, however not even all scientists believe in it, so...who knows? yes some are: theories are just that: theories not facts, science has "known" a number of things that have eventually turned out to be wrong. Over all though I believe we LDS are much more open to scientific theories that many o ther religions. I doubt it. Unfortunatly most of the branches of science that could 'prove religion wrong' are the soft or inexact sciences (like anthropology), also theories are not facts. Also some more thing's to think about 1. We LDS do not believe in Biblical inerrancy 2. We believe that the world 'created' in Genesis means 'organized' (as in from pre-existing material) 3. We also believe that the 'days' of Genesis were creative periods of unknown length that could have lasted thousands, millions or even billions of years. ---- Good questions! you'll see that there is some variation in our answers, but not a whole lot. I agree with Vort that religous texts are not meant to be scientific explainations. I'll go so far as to say that religous texts don't even have to be historically accurate as different writers have their own: world view, prejudices, and idea's. We don't believe that God dictated scripture nor (like some religous people) that he somehow protects scripture so it says exactly what he wants it to. My personal opinion: God is the ultimate scientist and uses scientic principles to 'create' (or organiize) and to accomplish His goals -- and many of those scientific principle have yet to be discovered by mankind. -
(Everyone) Are we required to live the law of consecration today?

LDS Take on Isaiah 44:6
mnn727 replied to curtishouse's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
My personal opinon is that many people latch onto one verse and ignore all the other verses that may contradict it or clairify it. We also do not believe in Prophets being infallible or that GOd has preserved the Bible with exactly the information He wants us to have. We also know that the Bible has been translated many times and to say that any version says exactly what the original writer meant is way too much of a stretch. Now having said that, we believe God the Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are 3 individuals that make up one Godhead -
Role-playing & Virtual Worlds
mnn727 replied to Bini's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
Its left to the individual, but having been a D&D player and currently a World of Warcraft player, I would warn against wasting too much time on games. I limit myself on World of Warcraft to times that wouldn't normally be family time - I gotta say, it is adicting and I can understand how people could spend hours a day playing. I also say the first time I don't get 100% Home Teaching in a month, the game has to go. -
What is the Gospel according to the LDS?
mnn727 replied to curtishouse's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
There is a wonderful book that speaks to this called "Believing Christ - the Parable of the Bicycle and Other Good News" by Stephen Robinson Amazon.com: Believing Christ the Parable of the Bicycle and Other Good News (9780875796345): Stephen E. Robinson: Books If you want just one book that defines our belief in and about Jesus and what His Gospel is all about, IMO this is it. -

mnn727 replied to Cydonia's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
You are exactly right, it took me a number of years to figure that out, but the fact is, I made a Covenant with God to follow it - period, end of story.
