You must use a different Bible than the rest of the world, Jonah did NOT tell them to repent, he said they were going to be overthrown:Jonah 3: 4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. On their own the people repented (Jonah 3: 5-9), God decide not to destroy them (Jonah 3:10) which is what got Jonah so pissed off at God Jonah 4: 1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry. -
Why I'm Wary Of Facebook by JeaNette Goates Smith
mnn727 replied to KeithLBrown's topic in General Discussion
I just don't get the whole facebook thing as far as why its so popular, it seems like a silly waste of time to me. If I want to let someone know something I'll pick up the phone or send them an email. I don't 'share things' with large groups of people. I don't post pictures or personal info online anywhere - that's just asking for trouble in my opinion as an IT Professional To each their own though -
Are your parents prone to 'telling stories'? There is no wish room, and there is nothing in the Temple like that.

Ever hear of a guy named Jonah and what he told Ninevah? -
My wife and I invite people over for dinner or just for desert (a brownie mix only cost $2.00) and get to know them and they get to know us.

let me clairify as your interpretaion of what I said goes a bit further than my meaning1. Do I believe that God wrote (or caused to be written) the Bible and protects it from any and all error? No 2.) I think the N.T. supercedes the O.T. 3.) I use the test Jesus Himself gave in Matthew 7 -

I find it very telling that most main stream Christians tell us that the O.T. rules and the Laws of Moses were finished withs Christs atoning sacrifice, but then they like to hold on to their favorites -- not saying you personally do this, but just an in general observation. Just a few thoughts on this and they are my personal thoughts not necessarily Church doctrines or teachings. 1. we don't hold any scripture to be the 100% infallible word of God 2. The New Testament gives a different test for Prophets 3. We have a test for anything the Prophets say, if you read both Brighams Youngs quote and Elder McConkie's article (that I posted) you'll see what that is 4. How do you feel about Jonah? -

We'll have to disagree on this one, and I'll leave it at that, rather than saying what I really think about Jack Chick and his "ministry' -

I sure hate to tell you this, cause I think I'm going to rock your world, but even the Prophets themselves tell you the same thing I did. Here is a good article from Elder Bruce R McConkie on the subject from the Ensign </H2> -
And you probabably never will understand it completely on this side of the grave. God does not fit into mankinds neat little boxes. But let me try: President Monson, President Eyring and President Uchdorf are all Presidents, correct? 3 seperate individuals all correctly called President Are there then 3 Presidencies? no, there is one Presidency with 3 members. Similiar thing with God

This rule went around in many areas for a short period of time and then was repealed quickly in most area's also.

If learning actual Church history is enough to make you question the truthfulness of Church Doctrines then In my opinion you believed in the Church for the wrong reasons. This is the Church of Jesus Christ, this is not the Church of Joseph Smith or the Church of Brigham Young or even the Church of Thomas Monson. None of those men were, or ever claimed to be perfect, only Christ is perfect, only Christ never misspoke, only Christ never expressed a personal opinion that happened to be in error, only Christ never did or said something stupid or did something He shouldn't have done. If someone loses their testimony of the Church because of something Brigham Young said or Joseph Smith did then you are in the Church for the wrong reasons in the first place cause those men were/are human just like I am and Christ's atonement covers their sins just like it does mine and I thank Him every day for that atoning sacrifice and even for the examples of the Prophets messing up, cause if He will still work with them after their messups I can be assured he won't give up on me either. Adam/God never went through a correlation, never was signed by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve and presented for the Churches sustaining vote, never made it into the D&C. The fact is we just don't know what Brigham Young actually meant - was it literal? was it symbolic? was he trying to teach us something that he understood and we don't? did human languange get in the way of teaching an eternal priinciple that doesn't really translate into human language? was he just human and made a mistake? We do know that the theory that God was the same Adam who was in the Garden of Eden was denounced by the First Presidency a couple decades later so to be upset about this little bit of Church history is really kind of silly in my opinion If you look for mistakes in human history, you will find them. As for me -- I see the mistakes but I also see men and women that rise above their mistakes and I see how God can lift them up even after they mess up big time and that comforts me, cause I mess up big time occasionally too - so there is hope for me too. Do you have a testimony of Jesus Christ? cause I do, and He has witnessed to me that what I was and am being taught is true. He never gave me a witness that Brigham Young or Joseph Smith was perfect because they were not. His invitation to each of us is to "Come follow me" its the same invitation he gave to Peter, James and John, its the same invitation he gave to Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and Thomas Monson and yes even to mnn727 and that is why I am a member of this Church. This is my testimony, that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah who atoned for our sins, the Son of the living God, and that this Church, no matter how imperfect its members and even it's leaders can be at times is His Church and if we truly accept Christs invitation to Follow Him he will work with all of us imperfect humans and help to perfect us so we can return to live with Him. 2 Ne. 25: 26 And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look for a remission of their sins. -
No such rule, we take the missionaries out to eat every so often too.
-
ummm No.Can you not even conceive of the notion that your interpretation may not be the only one possible?
-
This is my personal belief also. Its not an LDS belief, it is however my personal belief
-
Well, according to the RCC Church at least.Remember: the winners write the history, not the losers.

Temple
mnn727 replied to JessicaHarper's topic in Learn about The Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints
The Temples are where we go to make sacred covenants with God -
If He meant 'consecrated to God' I would have to assume he would have said 'consecrated to God'. Why toy around with a word that would cause much confusion of the issue?
-
My gosh, garments are cheap compared to regular underwear. I can buy 3 sets of garments for what it would cost for 1 set of decent quality underwear from any store.

Good point about sex, much of the Christian world still believes sex is "dirty" or sinful However about this If all we had was a biblical record, I would say you nailed it, but we have the BoM translated in 1830, by which time the word 'virgin' did not mean 'someone given in the service of God' so God (using J.S. to translate) would have used something besides 'virgin' if that is what was meant.

Since Doctrine can be described as a revealed eternal truth: If we don't know or its never been revealed, then how can it be considered doctrinal? This is doctrine and in my opinion (but obviously not some others opinion) is pretty clear: Luke 1: 35 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 1 Ne. 11: 13, 15, 18, 20 13 And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the great city of Jerusalem, and also other cities. And I beheld the city of Nazareth; and in the city of Nazareth I beheld a virgin, and she was exceedingly fair and white. • • • 15 And I said unto him: A virgin, most beautiful and fair above all other virgins. • • • 18 And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh. • • • 20 And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms.

1. Yes some seminary teachers teach full time, students are released from school for a class period and have their seminary then where LDS populations are very high. Its elective, no one is forced to go and considered release time from school. 2. I think you'll find a very small percentage of LDS believe that. I believe however its based upon misunderstood statements, conjecture and opinion. It is certainly NOT doctrinal.
