  1. All 3 points completly true
  2. No the movies were terrible!
  3. How about "The Work and the Glory"? Seriously though, its a historical novel and isn't bad. The author ends each chapter by stating what is real and what is fiction
  4. Recreational drugs are things used to get high.Perscription and over the counter drugs are fine
  5. And if we were preaching a different gospel, I would agree, but we’re not preaching a different gospel, we’re preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, same as what is in the Bible – clarified a bit but still the same. nope, I am a convert and there is no other LDS (Mormons) in my ancestry If you believed God asked you to give up coffee, would you? It’s an obedience thing. Jesus hung on a cross and died for me – I can give up coffee for Him. His sacrifice was much greater than mine. Many people say many things, I study and pray and make up my own mind. Again, many people say many things. We are as Christ centered as any Church I have ever been to, more so than some. No: Coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs. Missions are optional.
  6. "They" being who? Your ward? cause that calling is alive and well in my ward.
  7. While I understand where you are coming from, not every is comfortable as a public speaker or can put words together without reading them.I enjoy a well prepared talk even if its 100% read rather than one where someone spends little time in preperation and tries to 'wing it'.
  8. With all due respects to Robert Heinlein whom I consider a fantastic author - the quote is nuts to anyone who has read ANY history of the 1800's.Ask Joseph Smith if it was a polite moral society in the 1830's and 1840's, yet most everyone had guns. Of course Heinlein did write fiction.
  9. As compared to the do-bad regressives in the Republican Party????
  10. Dear Department of Transportation. Whose bright idea was it to start using roundabouts in this country? They are not only confusing, they are dangerous. First time I saw one I went around it 3 times before I could figure out what the heck was going on. It is not easier, it does not make traffic flow smoother, you can't see around it especially when you plant trees and bushes in the middle. People have to try to merge into rotating traffic all of which is trying desperatly to figure out where to exit, and if they happen to live near one and use it daily they then have contempt for all the people that may see them only a few times in their lifetime.Send the roundabouts back to Europe and give us back our 4 way stops.
  11. Dear Ward members When I leave a message on your answering machine/voicemail please have the courtesy to call me back. I am just trying to do my calling.
  12. An oxymoron as most Jews do not trust the Kabbalah
  13. 1. This was part of Hitlers propaganda to stir up hatred against the Jews 2. This was passed along by some people and is a Mormon myth, but this was completly debunked by modern day Prophets (Joseph Fielding Smith wrote, "There were no neutrals in the war in heaven. All took sides either with Christ or with Satan.") 3. 1000 year reign of Satan!!! just plain false (although he will "be released for a season" according to scripture - Rev 20:3 )
  14. Why?I think there are times to read from start to finish and I think there are times when you study by subject, neither way is wrong and there are reasons why you would do it both ways at different times. I agree with the others, new members and investigators should go through the Gospel Principles manual to learn about our beliefs, it really is the best way.
  15. Personal Growth I see the Lords hands in my callings over the years and wonder if others see the same thing I was an adult convert and I hated public speaking, I was called to teach EQ and later other classes and learned to love public speaking I was very unorganized in my life and was called to be Ward Clerk – which forced me to become organized. I had a period of time where I was feeling superior to some people, and I was called to teach a gospel class in a Federal Prison and was taught both humility and compassion for others I hated calling people on the phone and am now the Ward Exec Sec. and calling people has turned into a piece of cake (getting them to return my calls is something else entirely) All these callings have been definite blessings in my life even though they may not have seemed so in the beginning. I am just wondering if others have had the Lord “make weak things strong”
  16. Perhaps if we stopped changing HT routes so often it would turn into the type of program it should be.
  17. The Family is the basic unit of the Church, so its not an either/or thing.
  18. Nothing to do with the topic, but I just wanted to point out that Mythbusters proved this statement false.
  19. Thats a really hard question, because besides being very active, there are still times (maybe 10%) when I think we may all be just fooling ourselves, but you know what - I am a better person now that I am a member than I was before I joined so even if there is no God, I am ok with being a member.
  20. I was semi-active for a couple years after living in a Ward that I hated - literally we moved just to get out of the Ward boundries. The move was into a better Ward but old habits hang on and I was still semi-active A calling to teach EQ (out of the J.S. manual)got me in 2 Sundays a month, it also reminded me why I joined the Church in the first place, that led to a desire to go back to the Temple (I had let my TR expire for about 3 years) which led to my becoming more and more active, about 2 month's after getting my T.R. I was called as Ward Exec Sec which means I now spend about 7 hours every Sunday at Church (and 2-10 hours more a week on my calling - only going for 3 hours would seem like a piece of cake now!
  21. I know John Paul II was Pope for a long time but when he passed away a couple years back Benedict XVI became Pope (or I should say Joseph Ratzinger became Pope and chose the name Benedict)Other than that, you're correct
  22. Having been Ward Exec Secretary for 6 months now, I can honstly say that before this calling I had no idea how many hours a week Bishops "work" at their callingMy Bishop regularily puts in about 25 hours a week at Church (how many hours he spends on his calling at home I don't know), this is on top of a 40 hour a week "real job". He's older: all the kids are grown and out of the house, I don't know how young Bishops do it. Plus he gets his Home Teaching done. So I now have little sympathy for someone who spends 1 - 5 hours a week on their calling and complains about the time it takes to H.T.
  23. There couldn't be 2 Christian philosophies further apart than Mormonism and Calvinism. As I understand it Calvinism professes predestination, total depravity and unconditional election. Mormonism professes free agency, no original sin, and (wo)mans choice as far as where (s)he'll end up (based on their knowldege and desires and follow-through)
  24. As long as there is true repentance, yes. If he is just saying the words because he's afraid but doesn't truly believe, then in my opinion, no.But one thing I need to point out is that only God knows someones heart and for that matter the circumstances that put him in that position in the first place. God is the only one capable of judging. Jesus' atoning sacrifice covers all sins, great and small. (ok, there's one exception according to the Bible - "blasphemy against the Holy Ghost", but IMHO few people will ever qualify for that)
  25. there are 3 divisions in heaven (different kingdoms) each have their own requirements. But ultimatly its the atonement of Jesus Christ that gets us there, if not for His atoning sacrifice we wouldn't have a chance.
