What do you think of the Plain English Book of Mormon?
mnn727 replied to prisonchaplain's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Why? do you also make them say Thee and Thou at home? Do you speak in 19th century English at the dinner table? When you are telling them what you did that day do you say "And it came to pass....." Tradition! Obviously I like the idea, I've read it. I would prefer something put out by the Church however, using the same process used to translate scripture into other languages, I think it could/would be better. -
which is where you are wrong IMHO, its an interesting read and opens minds to what could be done -- not to pick on you personally but there are way too many attitudes like the above statement in the Church, it reminds me of the song "Tradition" in Fiddler on the Roof. I think Tradition is the reason for many things in the Church.there is no reason for not having a modern English translation -- other languages have them already, any clairifications needed could be done via footnotes EXACTLY like is already done in the KJV version, and there is no reason why the same process used to translate the scriptures into other languages couldn't be used to translate them into modern English. Eventually it will have to be done - I vote for sooner rather than later.

This would be wonderful, while the original verse is not terribly hard to understand, this makes it so much clearer to us in the 21st century.
-
But why? tradition? cause thats the only reason I can see. Unless its the copyright that PC brings up, in that case I think we should print our own.
-
You're right, they can and do, but no more so than the KJV translators did which is why we have footnotes gto the JST on a number of verses - my point in the same could be done on any version - so that really in my opinion wipes out the typical arguments for using such an archaic version of the Bible.

Ok, so I am in EQ last Sunday and I really can’t believe what I am hearing. Now we have a large EQ (38 attending last week) and they are very vocal and enjoy participating in class. Also most of our EQ are RM’s that were born in the Church and have never done more than a visit to any other Church and usually not even that. Also they have always read the KJV version of the Bible. But during the clesson on Scripture they are really cutting down any other versions of the Bible (modern English versions) and I don’t mean just “as far as they are translated correctly” I mean trashing as in “they’re all garbage and they twist EVERYTHING “ (that exact statement was made by a class member) Are we not guilty of the same thing we accuse the Protestants of and that is condemning something without even giving it a chance first? I know it’s a pet peeve of mine, but I prefer not to set up a language roadblock to people who are not familiar with 16th century or 18th century English (like potential converts) or (like me) just don’t like trying to translate it into understandable language. Are there some differences in meaning? Yeah, but no more than the KJV has naturally that the footnotes to the JST have corrected I don’t find the KJV either poetic or respectful, I just find it archaic and past its usable time – time to put it to rest IMHO. I regularly read TNIV and with a few footnotes (again to the JST) it could be a good replacement. Thoughts?

We talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, but do we enough?
mnn727 replied to martybess's topic in LDS Gospel Discussion
Not even close as my example about my former Church showed. You'll never hear things like my example showed (from my previous Church) in the LDS Church and you should not hear it in any Church, its not what Christ taught -- not in the Bible nor in the BoM -

Come on people, what Church do you belong to? Our worship and our lessons are centered around Christ. The differece between us and most Protestant Churches is that they have a "gospel ABOUT Jesus Christ" and we have the "Gospel OF Jesus Christ" Let that sink in for a minute, in fact go back and read that last sentance again, and you should understand the difference between the two. I used to belong to a Pentecostal Church and everything was "Jesus this" and "Jesus that", "turn everything over to Jesus", "let Jesus do everything" and "We're sinners, rotten and terrible, not worthy of anything, and Jesus is everything" Well, thats one reason I am an EX-Pentecostal. I challange anyone to keep track of the number of times Jesus and God the Father are mentioned on a typical Sunday (not including prayers) I think you'll be suprised how high that number is. I was the times I've done it. -
I do too, I think its a stupid statement that people repeat over and over without thought - its habit rather than conviction in most case IMHO.

Nothing in the scripture's quoted say what your friend believes.

Its an over generalization, Sure there are some that the quote fits, but not even close to a majority of gays. -

We use wine in cooking every so often, the problem is in buying it -- avoiding the appearance of impropriety, seems like everytime we go to the grocery store we run into someone from the ward. -
In the Bible:Acts 17: 29 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’scdevice. Rom. 1: 20 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Col. 2: 9 9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. BTW "Trinity" is not found in the Bible at all.

In the average Ward you have about 100 ordained Priests (both Aaronic and Melchizedak) how can any other Church compete?

This has been discussed and debated and argued a number of times here with most of the threads being locked eventually. There are as many reasons for obesity as there are obese people, to make a "one size fits all" rule or statement would be absurb. Its not as simple as prohibiting something. Much easier to give up coffee or cigarettes than it is for many people to loose weight. You can give up smoking cold turkey and never have another cigarette. You can give up coffee, tea, booze, etc and never have another. but you will always have to eat.

Articles of Faith 1 Here is a link to our Articles of Faith No offence to your personally, but we get a number of these requests from college and high school students both here and on another LDS message board I post on, and I am curious why a student wouldn't go to the source (the official LDS website) rather than a message board to get answers? makes no sense to me. At a message board you have no idea who is answering and if the answers are true or not.

What SAVES us? or What EXAULTS us There is a BIG difference between the 2

Did you say something? , no doesn't count cause Heavenly Father actually listens, something kids rarely do.

Ethical? No, but then it was not ethical for banks and finance companies to loan more than a person could afford or more than a house is worth or have 'teaser rates' or any other of the practices that got us into this mess. My mortgage is about 10% more than my current value even though I put 20% down at the time I purchased it) due to the fact I bought at the highest point in the real estate market (had to move due to job). So what? I like the house, its in the area I want to live and I can easily afford it (ie I didn't buy more than I could afford even though the banks kept telling me I could afford much much more). You don't actually lose any money until you sell the property. I'll be here long enough that perhaps the value will increase to what I paid for it or maybe not. In the meantime its still better than paying rent.

When you talk to your earthly father do you say the same thing time after time? If not, why not? If God is literally our Father (which we believe) why would you say the same thing to Him over and over?

Matt. 6: 7 7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

A short synopsis: a lot of speculation between 2 somewhat plain covers.

What? that does not make sense. If you are not endowed, then you can not do anything but baptisms for the dead and that by ward appointment.
