  1. I think the person needs to find out why they don't want kids. I also think there's room to work with it. Years ago, my therapist told me her husband didn't want kids but she did and so she told him he wouldn't have to do a thing (she changed *every* diaper, was always the one to get up in the night, etc). He loves his kids and can't imagine life without them but there had to be an understanding of how much would be expected. They have three.
  2. Welcome to the fold! What a wonderful thing for you and your family! I think it's sweet that you're considering the elders feelings and agree that they're just happy to see this outcome. I think they know that it only takes one to baptize though so it's already a 50-50 chance. Have you decided who will confirm you a member? That's another way they could be involved. All that said, this is *your* baptism and it's ok for you to have the experience you'd prefer since it's (usually) a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Honestly, as far as the missionaries are concerned - the baptism is a one day event but your lifelong conversion is what they hopefully consider to have 'under their belt'. Again, welcome - we're happy to have you join us!
  3. I also think it has more to do with maturity level and not age and that living away from home for a bit beforehand is best. As far as advantages/disadvantages - one that comes to mind is that those who wait longer may be used to having/doing things their way and that could be a rough transition. Oh, also those who wait longer will (hopefully!) have a bit more money in the bank so finances aren't as much of a stress.
  4. I think it's caused by a combination of things: -if mom isn't healthy during pregnancy (candida overgrowth, etc) -if mom doesn't leave enough space between kids (3 years) to replenish nutrients -if mom doesn't eat healthy during pregnancy then baby is born with lower immune system -add too many vaccines -add unhealthy foods and you trigger the issue I've heard and read that changing the diet can help immensely - with this and just about everything else.
  5. I am well, thank you, and no where did I disagree with you. Maybe I wasn't clear so just a couple points: - yes, there are billions who believe in Christ *and there are billions who don't* - yes, Christ is the ultimate healer (="essential") but if you're sick, you still go to the doctor (="tools") I'm sorry you've experienced such terrible things and am glad you've found healing.
  6. It's a monthly newsletter for the Primary teachers in which we include a spiritual thought and teaching tip (hence the quotes). Thanks all! You're awesome and gave me some great options and things to consider! Have an enjoyable Sabbath! :)
  7. I am putting together a newsletter which includes a couple quotes from General Authorities. One is from David O. McKay while he was in the Quorum of the 12. Would you use 'Elder' as the title in this case or use 'President' because he was in that position (though later than the date of the quote)?
  8. Agree with Literate - Yes, the Atonement is essential. However, Heavenly Father has provided many tools to help us along (*more than just talk therapy*). After all, not everyone believes as we do and they need help as well and Heavenly Father wouldn't just leave them out in the cold.
  9. This goes for everybody - Genesis 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
  10. Took the words right out of my mouth!
  11. I like the idea of having it at a park or something similar. My house isn't kid-proof so I wouldn't be as inclined to ever host and would be hesitant to participate at all because of that.
  12. Amen!, jag and with that said - I've said enough and need to get things done.
  13. It was brought up that boys and girls have different needs but since it takes so much time to get through all the requirements, etc. that's where the time and focus is but it doesn't interest every boy - different boys have different needs as well. Scouts isn't for everyone but that's how it's treated.
  14. Yes, wingnut, they do have different needs. But I'll give you a couple things to consider - I have a friend who's brother wasn't into scouts so he left the church - and still hasn't come back. There are girls/women who see the difference in what they get and do and what the boys get and do and it doesn't quite cut it to hear in Conference that 'men and women are equal' / 'we value the women just as much' when you see the discrepancies. Money talks so they also become disenchanted and leave.
  15. Two things - -if the Personal Progress program is good enough for the girls then why all this stuff for the boys? -if scouts is really all that great, why hasn't the Church adopted in all other countries?
  16. First off, you misread - it's Activity Days that did the beads and meet less often. And maybe you're not aware but “Parents and leaders should help the children understand that the joy of living the gospel is the most important reward” (Faith in God guidebook [2003], 19).
  17. Having 'Eagle Scout' was a plus on my husband's resume as well but again - I've seen that not all 'Eagles' are equal!
  18. Giving someone something for every little thing they do is a false tradition. Years ago, there were beads (cheap, plastic beads) for the girls in Activity Days to earn when they finished things in *Faith in God* but the Church did away with that. The boys, on-the-other-hand are still given all sorts of patches, belt loops and pins (not cheap) for things that you won't find in Faith in God. They also meet more often. The Young Women used to have medallions when you earned your Beehive, MiaMaid and Laurel but that doesn't happen any more either. If these things are good enough for the girls, why are they not good enough for the boys? We are equal after all and it would be nice if that was backed up. I think the BSA fit better with the Church in the past but it's taken a turn - a very expensive turn.
  19. I know their not volunteers but because it takes so many volunteers to run the program, I don't see that it's right for a select few to live so much better than said volunteers because without them, there wouldn't be any organization at all. From what I've seen, I would hope that Church packs/troops would ignore a lot of what the BSA offers so comparing Church groups with Community groups is irrelevant.
  20. That's the thing - I try to emphasize the core values because that's the only thing I can see why the Church is even associated with the BSA. For the record, my brothers and husband are all Eagles and I thought it was a great organization --- until I got involved with Cubs and have read and seen how sacred funds are not only used to teach false traditions but it's in quite a contrast with what the girls do! Also, the Church doesn't need the BSA to teach these ideals! My dad is living proof!
  21. I'm not envious I just think it's wrong - especially since so many *volunteer* their time and means! I also don't see why we pay into the pot for the boys when there is no pot for the girls and they have a great and valuable experience anyway!
  22. To me, the FOS campaign is (one of) the "Frauds of Scouting". So, no, we don't donate money and if we were ever approached that person would get an earful. I figure that with all the *time* my husband has spent over the years involved with scouts (and now me with Cubs, unfortunately) - that is our donation (except that our tithing supports the BSA nonsense as well - but I try not to think about it). I would need the following answered before I ever changed my mind - -why are the camps not self-sustaining given how much the boys have to pay to go? -how is the difference in camps fair to the girls? -given they can do fundraisers, why do they need more money? -is the money only going towards what's needed for rank and not every doo-dad that's offered? (can give recent example from my ward - unreal!!!) -how much do the execs make for a *non-profit organization*? -how much has been paid out for lawsuits? -how much of it really goes to the boys? -how much have you gotten from business donations? I think it's wrong for this to be brought up over the pulpit or take up time in SS or PH/RS since it has nothing to do with the Gospel and if I were an investigator, a sales pitch at church would be a major turn-off!
  23. Reviving in hopes that someone will have something to offer. Thanks!
