MorningStar Posted August 7, 2008 Report Posted August 7, 2008 Years ago we had these funny missionaries when my mom was a stake missionary, so we spent quite a bit of time with them. One time they t.p.ed the inside of our house. Anyway, my mom was wondering about their names and one of them laughed, "You'll never guess mine." She immediately replied jokingly, "Is it Thadeus?" His name was Thad. His mouth dropped open when she guessed that. I guess that was one of those psychic moments or something. Ever have a moment like that? Quote

Ever have a moment like that? No, I haven't. But then, I would assume a missionary's first name is "Elder." Elphie Quote
prisonchaplain Posted August 7, 2008 Report Posted August 7, 2008 I thought all missionaries had the first name Elder...like it was a requirement or something...you have to be Elder to be a missionary. Quote
breeb Posted August 7, 2008 Report Posted August 7, 2008 We had an Elder Berry in our ward. I always told him his father was a hamster and his mother smelled of elderberries. Line from Holy Grail. Quote
Misshalfway Posted August 7, 2008 Report Posted August 7, 2008 I know of a Mr. and Mrs. Elder who served a mission. It was "Elder Elder" and "Sister Elder" on their badges! Quote
john doe Posted August 7, 2008 Report Posted August 7, 2008 I was called Elmer a few times on my mission....... Quote
skippy740 Posted August 7, 2008 Report Posted August 7, 2008 Do you think their names were embossed on their scriptures? Quote
Palerider Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 we were always told......hey you guys have the same first name.... Quote
thejason Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 I thought all missionaries had the first name Elder...like it was a requirement or something...you have to be Elder to be a missionary. Is that sarcasm or did you really think that? Quote
bubbleboy_619 Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 Haha, that's very funny. A few months ago, when I first met the missionaries, I noticed their name tags. I didn't know anything about missionaries at the time, just that they go around to delightfully spread the gospel of the Lord. Two of them came to my door. Then I thought, Wow, what a coincidence - two missionaries with the same first name! Then another missionary came to sub in for one of them. I thought, Something isn't right. Three with the same name? That's when I got the clue that it was a title used for the missionaries. I really laughed at myself for that one. But, it's good to see that I'm not the only one. Ah, that's great. Quote
siouxz72 Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 hahaha johndoe! I can just picture someone calling you Elmer! Where's pammy?! She needs to read this! :) Quote
Palerider Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 Where I served we did not have to wear name tags.....so...no one knew our names until we introduced ourselves.... Quote

I'm still trying to come up with some about how you probably carried around your scriptures rolled up in scrolls, but I haven't perfected it yet. I'll get it up one of these times. My nametag helped a couple of times, especially when we would go down to the projects. The locals would accost us and ask what we were doing down there. They thought we were undercover cops or lawyers until we showed them we were preachers, then they left us alone. Quote

skippy740 Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 I have a missionary name tag which has my Last name on it but I have never gone on a full-time mission. How did I get it?You either got it off of ebay, or you're serving as a stake missionary? Quote
john doe Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 I have a missionary name tag which has my Last name on it but I have never gone on a full-time mission. How did I get it? A couple guesses: 1) A child went on a mission and gave you their tag2) You were or are a ward or stake mission.3) It was bought at a missionary supply store or the distribution center. Sometimes I see kids with nametags on with their name and 'future missionary' on it. Quote
StrawberryFields Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 Sorry I almost forgot I did this. Well The first one I got came from my husband after we were married it had part of my name on it...:D The second and third ones came from a calling we had as Stake Missionaries.:D:D Quote

hethathathears Posted August 9, 2008 Report Posted August 9, 2008 My second companion on my mission had the same last name as I did. As a result our name tags looked the same. People thought that we were a cult and that everyone in the Mormon church had the name Elder Hethathathears. Another thing that was done on my mission that I would like to mention was that one of the Elders in my Zone was having a birthday, and so we went out to get him a card and maybe a few small gifts as he was really trunky. I was in charge of getting him a card and so I got him a Birthday card for my sister that had a really beautiful poem on it and every place where it had the word sister on it I crossed it out and wrote the word Elder. It was done in good taste and was really funny. Quote
