Hemidakota Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 No! I rather rent right now since there are many changes coming that home ownership will not matter. Quote

StrawberryFields Posted November 25, 2008 Author Report Posted November 25, 2008 Something that has been on my mind is that when people were thinking of the American Dream it represented so much more than just acquiring "stuff".The American Dream also meant Freedom and the ability to make choices as you climbed up the ladder. Now the motivation is to hit "just below" the middle rung or it is taken from you and given to the less fortunate. I wonder if we will also lose the ability to write off our freely given charitable donations. Quote
NeuroTypical Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 From what I understand, The American Dream involves being able to improve your own station in life through your own effort. For a lot of people (myself included), that translated into owning property. They call it the American Dream basically, because such a self-lifting was not possible for most people throughout Europe and most anywhere else. That's probably less true now than it once was. You can make a good arguement that if "The American Dream" is no longer solely something that can happen in America, it's because America led the world into such a good place. LM Quote
skalenfehl Posted November 25, 2008 Report Posted November 25, 2008 I've got a lot of years left in me and a few unrealized dreams. As long as I'm alive there will an American dream. Dangit!! Quote

Though, it will be important in a few years as the corruption and lawlessness grows in the land. Quote

a-train Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 I think the American dream is alive and well. In fact, we are just now getting back to that after a diversion to a debt-based nightmare. Hopefully America will start saving again and building the American dream. -a-train Quote

NeuroTypical Posted November 26, 2008 Report Posted November 26, 2008 I believe the American Dream is still alive. However, I also believe people have redefined the phrase "home ownership" into a lie that is causing problems. Traditional (and accurate) definition of Home Ownership: You own a home, having paid for it. Redefined (and inaccurate) definition: You have found a bank who lets you live in their home and slowly buy it over time. See, the redifined definition isn't correct. You don't own a home if you have a mortgage on it. Legally, the entity holding the deed owns the home. Ethically, you don't own the home until you have fully paid the debt you've incurred for it. Realistically, whoever can call cops to kick you out and take back ownership is the owner. LM Quote
annewandering Posted November 29, 2008 Report Posted November 29, 2008 wow nothing like settling in for the long haul before you have to do that much settling in. i kinda like the idea of growing my own fruit trees etc now on my own property for the coming hard times. or should i say the coming more hard times? on your own property you arent going to be booted because the homeowner went bankrupt. we did have that happen to us. it was very upsetting. the bad thing i see here is that if you only worry about tomorrow you dont enjoy and "reap the fullness" of today. StrawberryFields Posted November 30, 2008 Author Report Posted November 30, 2008 I always thought the American dream was to work hard, save money and buy a house. The government got rid of the first 2 requirements and look where it got us. Well as a family we still work hard and save our money. We were offered those loans such as the 80/20 when we were looking at another home. We never took advantage of those loans because we felt that if we didn't have at least 20 percent cash down we shouldn't buy it. We have done fairly well but it isn't because we have taken a ride on the easy street. We don't carry credit card debt. We pay more than the required amount on our mortgage. We owe nothing on our cars or other toys. Thanks for posting what you did hordak, it has given me a lot to think about. Quote

Hemidakota Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 I do believe, I know many will cast some stones here, without the church, this country would failed long ago and our American dream, fortune of having our own business and having our home, would be lost. Quote
