Dr T Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 Ok, so my question is this, "Why isn't the word 'willn't' a contraction for will not?" My daughter says it all the time. Like if I say move your drink farther forward on the table so u will not spill it" she says, "I willn't daddy." I LOVE that! Quote
SmilingRedhead Posted December 28, 2008 Report Posted December 28, 2008 Hey Dr. T! Long time no see :)Hope this helps..."won’t doesn’t come from will not but rather from woll not, an alternate form that existed into the mid-1800s. Will muscled out woll, but won’t muscled out willn’t. Just another weird bit fact about English."Preposterous Apostrophes VII: Why Won’t Willn’t Work? Motivated Grammar Quote
Dr T Posted December 28, 2008 Author Report Posted December 28, 2008 Good to c u Smiling :) I've never heard the word "woll" and never thought about the word wont really. Thank u for that. So I'll teach my daughter to say "WOLL NOT" hahahhaha Quote
mightynancy Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 My son used to say amn't. As in, "You are SO CUTE!" "No I amn't!" Quote
RainofGold Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Whenever my husband used to play games with my daughter she used to say "another gain please" instead of "do it again please" Quote
Dr T Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 I love those "amn't" and "another gain please" thanks for those! Quote

Palerider Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 My oldest daughter when you asked her...what you are doing Rachel....she would respond with..."Doin".....or how are you doing...."doin"....:) Quote
ruthiechan Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 My daughter says, "I'm boring" when she really means "I'm bored." I'm working to break her of that using humor since she's five and a half and in school, but it's really funny. "Mommy, I'm boring." BIG DOEFUL EYES. Quote
bodhigirlsmiles Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Ok, so my question is this, "Why isn't the word 'willn't' a contraction for will not?" My daughter says it all the time. Like if I say move your drink farther forward on the table so u will not spill it" she says, "I willn't daddy." I LOVE that! this used to be a term in english. it has fallen out of popularity. the same is true of mayn't (may not). i am somewhat of a novice jane austen scholar, and her works are repleat with examples such as the one you mentioned. checkerboy Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Ok I have to add shan't for shall not. I had a junior high history teacher that would say that one all the time. It made him sound pretentious. Maybe I should pick it up cause I am always looking for better ways to sound pretentious. Quote
Dr T Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 Thank u for that bodhigirl :) === "shan't" and "I'm boring" those are great! Quote
havejoy Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 My grand daughter scraped her knee this week and asked me to put a banjo on it. Quote
Iggy Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I'm glad that it'snot is not a word. It is not. Isn't is bad enough of a contraction. My cousin said it'snot or more often is'snot. My Dad would then ask her, What is snot? She also got her "sh's" and "f's" mixed up. Instead of saying, shuffle the deck, she said Fusshel the Deck. The other are not for the public board. But it sure was funny coming from a 4 year old. Quote
Gwen Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 my kids all came up with willn't on their own as well... i too love it, it's a great word. maybe if we all start saying it we can bring it into popularity? Quote
siouxz72 Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 me and my brother used to say mazagine and fridgidaytor and ambullANCE...we still do. cuz that's how we roll. Quote
Dr T Posted December 30, 2008 Author Report Posted December 30, 2008 hahaha I can see that for some reason Siouxz. Quote
pam Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 My grand daughter scraped her knee this week and asked me to put a banjo on it. Did you start singing "I came from Alabama wid a banjo on my knee?" Quote
