Hemidakota Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 EXCERPT: The most porn-watching ZIP codes in Utah, "with unexpectedly high subscriptions relative to their population and broadband usage," are 84766 in Sevier County, 84112 in Salt Lake County, 84018 in Morgan County, 84006 in southwest Salt Lake County, and 84536 in San Juan County.ARTICLE LINK: Deseret News | Utah No. 1 in online porn subscriptions, report says Quote
Captain_Curmudgeon Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 You've been on Mormonap:Now This IS Disturbing - Mormon Apologetics & Discussion BoardInteresting all the denial going on there and in the comments section of the DNews. I'm not surprised at the findings (which are pretty nuanced) when I consider how often porn is a topic at General Conference and on this forum. Quote
bytor2112 Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Given the population of Utah versus say...California or other big states........I rather doubt it. Quote
pam Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Actually I would not be surprised that those in Utah choose to purchase it online. In Utah it's not as eaily accessible as it is in other states. When I lived in California you could go to the local music store and purchase it there. When my ex husband tried to purchase some pornographic videos to be mailed to him..the company said they could not mail to an address in Utah. That was many years ago. And contrary to what many believe...Utah is not predominately LDS. Quote
Gwen Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 i think there are probably a few things influencing the outcome of their numbers, some they did address in the article. the availability of porn that isn't online. if i recall correctly ut has some of the highest censorship laws, so if you want 'real' porn you will have to order it online. other places you can find it in other places. when most of society finds something "bad" you tend to "hide" it more, even if you yourself don't subscribe to that moral standard. online ordering is easier to hide than outright shopping for it. it's based on averages, if you took my street and said there are x number of houses and y number of magazines being ordered, that averages out to z number per house.... which is true but what is to say that my neighbor is ordering the y number of magazines and the rest of us order none. if one person has a lot of porn it will average out to look poorly on the entire neighborhood. that being said i'm not sure i disagree with the numbers given. not sure when the last meeting i attended that porn wasn't discussed in some form. there is a lot of counsel right now coming from all directions in the church about it. it must be a problem. one can argue of course it's a problem in the world, we all know that. the ensign, new era, general conference aren't for the world they are for the saints. that is where we are hearing it. it's a problem among the saints. we shouldn't need a survey to tell us that. pam Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 That has changed then. I guess I should have clarified predominately. Many people from outside of Utah that I have talked to thought Utah was about 90% LDS. At the time I was able to give statistics showed only about 60%. That would be based on those that have records in the Church. That doesn't take into account that out of those 60% at the time, how many were totally inactive and wanting nothing more to do with the Church. Statistics sometimes can be a little deceiving. Quote

Statistics sometimes can be a little deceiving."Statistics are like a lamppost to a drunk, more often used to support then to illuminate"unknown authorYes the memberships roles has errors but this is what church uses to for it's stats. A pew religions study said 59% of Utahans claim to be LDS. Still a significant portion of the state. To be honest i find the double speak kind of annoying. (not accusing you) Being on different LDS message boards for a while i have found when a stats says Utah has the least out of wedlock births, least problems with alcohol etc. The influence of the church is cited as the prime cause because most of Utah is Mormon. However when depression rates ,pornography etc. Negative aspect are brought up the attempt is to down play the Churches influence in the state. Quote
pam Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 A pew religions study said 59% of Utahans claim to be LDS. Still a significant portion of the state. With the growth in Utah in the last several years...41% that claim not to be LDS is still a large group of people. Quote
hordak Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 With the growth in Utah in the last several years...41% that claim not to be LDS is still a large group of people.I agree. And i think you might be on to something with your post about limited access. I wonder what the laws are in Mississippi concerning pornography considering they have similar numbers? Quote
pam Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 To be honest, I'm not even sure that law still exists in Utah. This was about 11-12 years ago. But I do remember my ex telling me...Darn I can't buy these videos...the company said they are not allowed to ship to Utah. All I thought was "Yeh darn" Like that was something I really needed in my home. Quote

pam Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Then I suppose satan targets those who try to fight him… harder battle for those who try to stay on the path. This is so true. Quote

Who has the better records? Quote
Captain_Curmudgeon Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 Perhaps it is people trying to shut those sites down that are looking for / accessing them?A possibility. But I've seen several posts on this forum from people with family members who have porn addictions. Haven't seen even ONE from someone trying to shut down such a site by paying for it -- which is what the study is based on: credit card sales."Yeah, yeah, home teachers. I was just trying to shut down "Mopsies without Topsies" by giving them 24.95 per month. I was thinking they'd choke on it." Quote
Wingnut Posted March 3, 2009 Report Posted March 3, 2009 So, do you believe Pew Research (isn't it part of Yale?) or do you believe the church on church membership in Utah? Who has the better records?I think the Church gives us the numbers of people who technically are LDS, and Pew Research gives us the numbers of people who identify themselves as LDS (which may not include inactives or "Jack Mormons," both of which are abundant in Utah). He'll tell us what it really means.Way to put the pressure on. I'll be sweating bullets until I make a real post about this article.I ordered the research article from interlibrary loan. It'll be here in a couple of days, and if I remember to do it, I'll read it and make some comments then.In the meantime, I just want to point out that non-mormons do not have a monopoly on the perversion market Quote
Palerider Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 I wonder if this ranking will get BYU and Utah that BCS bid they have been wanting and waiting for......:):) Quote
Snow Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Not too surprising. So many Utahns have such an unhealthy view (at least publicly) view of sex. Combine that with high obesity rates and high rates of anti-depressants and it's not too flattering of a picture. Wound way too tight. Quote
pam Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Here is an updated story from the one posted in the OP.ksl.com - Utah not necessarily No. 1 in porn consumptionOne of the things the article brings out is a point I made earlier in the thread. Porn not being as easily accessible in Utah as far as stores etc. Quote
