Ghost_Rider Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Man sentenced for threat on LDS temple The Salt Lake Tribune Updated: 06/23/2009 02:51:08 PM MDT A Utah man was sentenced Monday to 36 months on probation for weapons violations in connection to a threat to kill people and fight his way into the LDS temple in South Jordan. Authorities said Benjamin Speakman went to Valley Mental Health in Midvale on Feb. 2 and stated he had weapons and planned to kill himself and others. When officers arrived, Speakman allegedly told them he planned to shoot anyone at the temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and get into the Celestial Room. Speakman on April 13 admitted he cut down the barrel of a 12-gauge shotgun that was not registered to him. He agreed to relinquish the shotgun along with a 9 mm Glock handgun and an AK-47. Erin Alberty After I read this I thought about "Does this mean that we are not safe even in the Temple?" I understand that it does not say why this man was wanting to do this. Does make me wonder though. Quote
DigitalShadow Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 I don't think temples are magically immune to natural disaster or attacks. You're not 100% safe anywhere, but you're reasonably safe just about everywhere. Quote
havejoy Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 If you were in the Celestial Room when you died and then you went to the Celestial Kingdom....how would you know you were dead? Quote
NeuroTypical Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 My thoughts: * This is unfortunate. * I'm glad this guy was stopped before he could hurt anyone. I'm glad both for them, and for him. * He went to a mental health place to make the threat. I consider it a strong posibility that his action was a cry for help. * I hope he gets the help he needs. * The Virginia Tech shooter managed to kill 32 people and wound 17 others with a Glock 9. It's very good at it's job. Quote
Ghost_Rider Posted June 23, 2009 Author Report Posted June 23, 2009 I agree with you Digital. I wonder if it this will change things though going to the temple. like going through metal detectors or something like at conference Quote
Dr T Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 I agree with you too DigitalShadow. I can see it happening. Quote
dazed-and-confused Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 My dear friend, you're forgetting that this life is fleeting and NOT the end.........dont be concerned with issues of safety here........afterall, we are already indestructable and eternal.......only question is.....where will our eternity be? NeuroTypical Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 Just for the record, I actually saw a thread once on an "LDS patriot" website where someone asked about the best way to paint their handgun white, so it would be appropriate to carry in the temple. There followed a quite vigorous debate about the appropriateness of doing so. Folks claiming "The Priesthood is more powerful than a Pistol" squared off against people who had witnessed what the dregs of humanity can do. I don't think anybody budged an inch in their set opinions. As for me, I really like dazed-and-confused's post, but I also have a concealed carry permit.Folks may be interested in this article from Stratfor: Security at Places of Worship: More Than a Matter of FaithLM Quote

ADoyle90815 Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 Unfortunately, churches and even LDS temples aren't immune from natural disasters or violence. I'm glad that this person was stopped before anything happened. Quote

JohnnyRudick Posted June 26, 2009 Report Posted June 26, 2009 (edited) Just to clarify there is no such weapon as a Glock 9. Glock makes several models that shoot 9mm rounds, but there is no model 9 from what I've able to find.I think that is what he ment. There is Semi Autos and also a full auto that is considered a 9mm Glock.Sorry about that other pictureBro.
