talisyn Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 So I was traveling to the Salt Lake International Airport today to pick up my fiance. I was traveling about 4 mph above the speed limit ( ) in the second right inside lane of a 4 lane freeway, no one at all in the 2 lanes to my left (the lanes we in Idaho refer to as 'the fast lanes'), when I noticed a few cars coming behind me at great speed. They seemed insistent on staying in my lane so I signaled to go to the outside right lane. I was about 1/2 way in when the people behind me, without signaling, moved into the lane I was almost into and proceeded to try to run into my bumper. All this while the 2 left lanes were completely empty. I assumed they were idiots so I went back to the second lane and went my merry way. Then it happened again. And again. I finally took refuge behind a big semi, figuring if someone was gonna push me out they'd have to take him out too. By the time I got to the airport I was totally frazzled and I've decided to never drive to Utah again. Is this common driving practice for Utah drivers? Is it a state law that you pass on the right? Because if you tried that here you'd get a ticket, fair warning Quote
pam Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 I've wondered that myself talisyn. In California it was illegal to pass to the right. I have found here in Utah, if you signal to move over...that signals other drivers to speed up to cut you off. I think Utah drivers are some of the least courteous drivers of places I have lived. pam Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 They do that here in Sacramento, too. Yet I grew up and lived most of my life in San Diego. Even when I was there 3 months ago I noticed that when I put my signal on, people let me in. It was such a pleasure and a difference from driving in Utah. Quote
JohnnyRudick Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 I drive in Utah every once in a while and have no problems at all. Except for once in a while I almost run into some slow out of state driver which almost slows me down - but I get through it all ok:) Bro. Rudick Quote
talisyn Posted July 2, 2009 Author Report Posted July 2, 2009 What kills me is the 2 empty lanes on the left. I know when I pass someone I go to those lanes, not the right (slow lane). Quote

john doe Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Yes, in Utah it is normal to be passed on the right side, especially on multi-lane roads. I don't know how legal it is, but it's normal. 4mph over the limit is way too slow for driving here too. Try to keep up with the flow of traffic and you will be much safer. You can be ticketed in Utah for impeding traffic even if you are speeding. Yes, we have idiots driving on our roads, and you will be much safer if you realize that and learn not to stress over that fact. I have learned that people here respect a driver who shows they are not afraid to hit them if they don't give room when merging. Quote

mightynancy Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Cali drivers are speedy and skilled, but nice. Idaho drivers are, for the most part, slow and don't understand the concept of an on ramp. IME Utah drivers are speedy and rude. It always amuses me that at the end of general conference, the person conducting reminds everyone to be courteous and obey traffic laws. Wow. Quote

Hemidakota Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 I have to laugh when I read this thread. Today I was pulled over by an immature and unknowledgeable automobile enforcement officer when I asked him, why did you pull me over. After revealing his lack of control and displaying his true spiritual demeanor of a two-year old child, you have a loud exhaust. I said really. After turning down the 2500-watt JL-6 booming bass rolling from the trunk space. I asked, to check his knowldge on what is the enforcement code for db on the any modded exhaust, "was it 105db range did you hear?" Noting his lack of expression on answering a simple question, in receiving the next reply of, "are you arguing with me". I replied, 'No! Asking a simple question you did not answer.' The answer is 95db is the CA Vehicle code limit. Even though my windows were rolled up and music was set at 60-percent power level, meaning, as I drive by, you will feel and may hear the bass through your car door, it was not the loud exhaust but the music he heard. Anyhow, this went on for a good five-minutes when he received a call from dispatch on a higher priority. In the end, not only he should not be handing out tickets to any person on the street, he should be removed from the force. Having my little voice recorder on the front seat, I rolled up the window and drove another two blocks to my house. Next thing this young officer will hear over his radio later, will be a bigger surprise yet, his supervisor calling him, asking about his misadventure with a guy name Hemidakota, who filed a complaint. :) Moments like this only happens in sunny California. People like this I really feel sorry. Quote
Traveler Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Okay –I will only explain this once so pay attention. In Utah there is a point system. You get a point any time someone signals something and you can beat them to it. You get two points if you can get someone to change lanes to the left in front of you when they really do not need to pass anybody. You get 3 points if you can get someone to pass you on the right and you lose a point every time you pass someone on the left. You get 4 points for driving 10 miles/hour under the limit in the left lane talking on a cell phone and bonus points for every driver you tick off.You get a point for every car you pass and then pull in front of when you slam on your breaks to turn right. You get a point for every yellow light you run and double your daily total if you can cause an accident without actually being in the accident. There are several other ways to earn points that I cannot remember but I am sure that if you drive in Utah you will quickly figure all of them out.I have done extensive research but have not been able to determine what the points can be used for. As near as I can determine it appears to be something in the next life. The Traveler Quote

Guest Godless Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 I never thought I'd say this, but Utah sounds worse than Kuwait and Iraq when it comes to driving (okay, maybe just Kuwait). That's pretty sad. Quote

platinum Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Having been to Utah a few times I can tell you that Utah does possess an inordinate amount of crazy drivers. Sad but true! Quote
miztrniceguy Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 i was unaware cars in the state of utah were even equipted with turn signalsthey are not turn signals. those flashing things on the corners of the vehicles are used to notify the car approaching from the rear which lane you want HIM/HER to pass you on. Quote
Mahone Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 When we get American missionaries here who have a British driving license, the first thing they always say is how polite British drivers are compared to American drivers e.g. we thank each other for letting us out and we give way even when not required to. I've been to American once, which just happened to be New York. I wouldn't dream of ever trying to drive in that state. I think people have their hand on their horn for about 60% of their journey, they use it for everything. I even witnessed a police officer shout at a car to "use his horn, that is what it's for" when the guy in front of him wasn't moving very fast. In the UK, your horn is for emergencies in order to warn someone i.e. a pedestrian steps out in front of you, not as a sign of your annoyance (even though occasionally that will happen). Quote
Palerider Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 In Missouri the left lane is for....only when you are talking on your cell phone and slow down at the same time while using your cell phone..:) Quote
aspenmgy Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 Psssh. Idaho drivers are much worse than Utah drivers. There are things on the right of the road called TURN LANES Quote
pam Posted July 2, 2009 Report Posted July 2, 2009 When I went to Ricks College in Idaho, one thing I noticed is that Idaho drivers do not slow down for pedestrians. Quote
