sixpacktr
Ram, You, of course, made a funny on Obama turning it down until AFTER he's done something noteworthy. That would mean that he would have to turn from his incredible arrogance and acknowledge that he hasn't done anything. I truly believe that in his own mind he has accomplished tons simply by being. Dravin
Rag on Obama all you want. Denigrate any award given (although if this was a Mormon who have won the Nobel Peace Prize, eventually a statue would be raised in their honor in Salt Lake). Politics in everything can blind us to that which is worthy of praise.. What I find amusing is elsewhere I go on the internet quite a few of his fans are left scratching their heads wondering what on earth he did to deserve it. Admittedly shots about his character aren't there amongst his supports, those comments are directed at the Nobel Prize Committee. Tis not like he put his own name in for the thing.Personally it puts him in a sticky situation for not have earned the thing but having it given him on expectations, if he has to do something warlike after receiving it those who gave it and support him receiving it based on future expectations are going to feel betrayed, and every time he does something like reduce troop movements people are going to accuse him of letting policy be dictated by the Peace Prize Commitee. That poor man just isn't going to be able to win. Even turning down the prize has its complications. Edited October 11, 2009 by Dravin
john doe
Actually, I think you do have to be nominated for it, and generally the nominee knows they are being nominated because inevitably it gets reported.

I don't recall seeing ANYTHING in the news about him being in the running.
prisonchaplain
Well, the real question here, did he really deserve it or was it a political move and playing favortism to a person? I am sure, there are many who did more for the world here but not in the political limelight should of deserve it. This move is no different than Gore receiving a nobel prize. But whether we agree with Gore or not, at least he did something relevant to the award. He made a movie about global warming, and he campaigned for efforts to reduce it. Regardless of our politics, if he gets a prize for combatting global warming, at least it makes sense.Obama gets the Nobel Peace Prize for what? Getting elected? Moving our war from Iraq to Afghanistan? Proving our impotence by chastising Israel, only to have them stop listening to us at all? Well...he's not Bush, and maybe this is a consolation prize. But the many commentators who say that this award diminishes the Nobel Peace Prize's prestige, and is almost more embarrassing than it is pride-inspiring. sixpacktr
That's a rather harsh judgement on the guy.You don't become President of the United States by sitting on your tumbs. No, you're right there. But he DIDN'T do anything before except vote 'present' for a couple of months. And with Chicago politics it isn't what you've done, it's who you know. And it wouldn't be sitting on his thumbs, but who he put the thumbscrews to to get where he is. Watch how he talks to people. He is an arrogant man. Anybody else would have turned this down. Even the President of North Vietnam turned it down in the 70s after we decided to abandon the South Vietnamese to their fate. EVEN A COMMUNIST turned it down. But not our President. sixpacktr
All right guys. Let's not turn this into an Obama bashing session.Pam, that sounds like one of those leading questions on either a Ronco or 'As Seen on TV' commercial, to which, of course, the answer is:There's nothing to it--it's so easy it practically makes/wipes/fixes/marinates/cooks/BASHES itself! john doe
I'm not bashing Obama. I'm bashing the idea that he was deemed deserving of the Nobel Peace prize based on a track record of........... nothing.
talisyn
Yes, obviously Illinois politics is so far-reaching that they got a bunch of eggheads in Sweden to vote for their guy. I can see so clearly now
