I think they do that one at quite a few funerals..at least all the LDS ones I've been to. I think it's appropriate and perfect. Quote
Jamie123 Posted November 5, 2009 Report Posted November 5, 2009 A hymn set to "Danny Boy"? Strange. But no more so, I suppose, than a hymn set to "Scotland the Brave". I cannot tell why He, whom angels worship, Should set His love upon the sons of men (*), Or why, as Shepherd, He should seek the wand'rers, To bring them back, they know not how or when. But this I know, that He was born of Mary, When Bethl'hem's manger was His only home, And that He lived at Nazareth and labored, And so the Savior, Savior of the world, is come. I cannot tell how silently He suffered, As with His peace He graced this place of tears, Or how His heart upon the Cross was broken, The crown of pain to three and thirty years. But this I know, He heals the broken-hearted, And stays our sin, and calms our lurking fear, And lifts the burden from the heavy laden, For yet the Savior, Savior of the world, is here. I cannot tell how He will win the nations, How He will claim His earthly heritage, How satisfy the needs and aspirations Of east and west, of sinner and of sage. But this I know, all flesh shall see His glory, And He shall reap the harvest He has sown, And some glad day His sun shall shine in splendor When He the Savior, Savior of the world, is known. I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, When, at His bidding, every storm is stilled, Or who can say how great the jubilation When all the hearts of men with love are filled. But this I know, the skies will thrill with rapture, And myriad, myriad human voices sing, And earth to heaven, and heaven to earth, will answer: At last the Savior, Savior of the world, is King.(*) In these days of political corrrectness, they've changed "sons of men" to "children of the earth". (And changed line 4 to something about "the promise of second birth" to make it rhyme.) I hate it when they ruin the old hymns. Vort 1 Quote
ferretrunner Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I rarely attend church anymore. The ones I remember really liking: O My Father, It is Well With My Soul There are a couple of others that I don't remember the names. They were the more energetic and joyful ones, though. Christmas time: Still, Still, Still - that melody is incredible. Quote

Tarnished Posted November 6, 2009 Report Posted November 6, 2009 I couldn’t help myself, when I first saw the title to this thread my first thought was, “Well what about our favorite “hyrs” (hers) why do the “hymns” (hims) get all the attention?” Silly I know. Anyway, on to the question, my favorite hymns are as follows: Come thou fount Abide with me How great thou art Oh my Father Be still, my soul A poor wayfaring man of grief Know this, that every soul is free Lead, kindly Light If you could hie to Kolob Alleluia (a song I sang in school but could easily be a hymn) Quote

Faded Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 Of the Hymns in the current edition of our Hymn Book, the one that is possibly most uniquely mine (it's not the favorite of everyone under the sun) would be Reverently and Meekly Now (185). The thing about this hymn that goes straight to my heart is that while singing it, it's as though Christ is speaking directly to me. He is telling me what he has done for me. He is telling me to repent and let him make me clean. He is telling me to be good and do what I know is right. The simplicity of it is just very powerful. Reverently and Meekly NowReverently and meekly now,Let thy head most humbly bow.Think of me, thou ransomed one;Think what I for thee have done. With my blood that dripped like rain,Sweat in agony of pain,With my body on the treeI have ransomed even thee.In this bread now blest for thee,Emblem of my body see;In this water or this wine,Emblem of my blood divine.Oh, remember what was doneThat the sinner might be won.On the cross of CalvaryI have suffered death for thee.Bid thine heart all strife to cease; With thy brethren be at peace.Oh, forgive as thou wouldst beE’en forgiven now by me.In the solemn faith of prayerCast upon me all thy care,And my Spirit’s grace shall beLike a fountain unto thee.At the throne I intercede; For thee ever do I plead.I have loved thee as thy friend,With a love that cannot end.Be obedient, I implore,Prayerful, watchful evermore,And be constant unto me,That thy Savior I may be.Other favorites: Amazing Grace (no idea why it's not in our hymn book!)Redeemer of IsraelLead Kindly LightI Believe in ChristI Know That My Redeemer LivesThe Spirit of GodA Poor Wayfaring Man Quote
