MichaelCraig Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 How many of you observe the "five second" rule? If you drop food, like maybe a cookie and it lands on a normal floor, if you pick it up within 5 seconds and blow it off, is it still good to eat? I say yes. Quote
Dravin Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 Depends on what it is and the surface it is being dropped on. P.S. And no, it isn't because I believe that no bacteria transfer in five seconds (or ten), I just have lots of faith in my immune system in certain situations. Quote

Bini Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 I never eat food that has dropped on the floor unless it's my floor in my house. But that's only with stuff like popcorn. I would never do it with like.. mashed potatoes.. Quote
hordak Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 I don't even eat leftover. of course i'm so weird If i have worn pair of sock, even only for a minute, and took them off they are dirty and i wont put them back on. Quote
WmLee Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 I've always thought it was a THREE second rule! I've been hustling for nothing? Quote
dazed-and-confused Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 like bini said...if it's MY floor..ok. when i was a kid, we would also "kiss it up to God". Quote
pam Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 Yep I agree with a couple here. If it's off of MY floor and dependent on what it is. Quote
Doctor Steuss Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 I thought the five second rule meant it was safe to eat if you pick it up within five seconds of seeing it. Didn’t know you needed to be the one that did the initial dropping.Oops. Quote
Wingnut Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 I thought the 5-second-rule was that it couldn't be on the ground for more than 5 seconds, not that you had to get it back into your mouth within 5 seconds, like in the video. Quote
Guest Alana Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 I'm a pretty gross person and eat lots of things I probably shouldn't. I also have the least stomach disturbances out of anyone in my family. If there was a chocolate chip cookies on the floor and it has been there for a day, I'd probably still eat it. Quote
annamaureen Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 It depends. If it's sort of a sticky or "wet" food that will pick up dirt or hair, no. If it's a hard dry food, then sure. And only on my floor. Quote
Guest xforeverxmetalx Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 Depends... if it's indoors at my house or somewhere I trust isn't horribly dirty, then sure. Also depends on what it is. For example, I cooked a frozen pizza and it fell cheese/sauce side down. Didn't eat it, had to throw it away. But if it had landed on the other side, no problem. [End of story, for all interested: I made another pizza. ] Quote
talisyn Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 I don't even eat leftover.of course i'm so weird If i have worn pair of sock, even only for a minute, and took them off they are dirty and i wont put them back on.haha I thought I was the only one OCD about socks! Yeah, once they're on the feet then off they get thrown in the washing machine. I have a 5 second rule, because I believe in the cleansing power of the microwave Quote
Mahone Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 of course i'm so weird If i have worn pair of sock, even only for a minute, and took them off they are dirty and i wont put them back on.I was about to post a message saying how weird I thought you were... then I thought about it, and realised I do exactly the same thing too. It only applies to socks though. Trousers and the like are all fine, unless they have been worn for more than half an hour. And there was me thinking I was free of OCD. I hadn't even thought about that as being an OCD trait haha. Quote
miztrniceguy Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 it depends on what where and how long. Quote
rameumptom Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 My mission was in Bolivia, where we had the 30 minute rule. Basically, if it hadn't been carried off by a cockroach within 30 minutes, you could still eat it. If it was still there after 30 minutes, the cockroaches didn't want it, and it probably wasn't good for you anyway.... Quote
deseretgov Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 I've always thought it was a THREE second rule! I've been hustling for nothing?I thought it was the TEN second rule. Quote
LDSVALLEY Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 5 seconds 50 minutes depends on three variables. 1 how many people and whom are around. 2 how dirty the surface it landed on is. 3 how much I happen to love the food that has fallen. Quote
mightynancy Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 I hope you ocd sock people do your own laundry! Every week I wash a certain Scoutmaster's uniform shirt that has been worn (over a tee shirt) for exactly one hour and twenty minutes. I mean, a person doesn't go around changing his shirt every 80 minutes, so why can't this shirt be reworn? Back on topic: I have lived in a third-world country, and will eat just about anything. Quote
Mahone Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 I hope you ocd sock people do your own laundry!Lol, I do my own washing, but my mother and I regularly have "discussions" as to whether her many complaints about how long the washing took during my childhood were unfounded or not. I mean, it's not exactly like we have to do a lot, is it really? You put it into the machine, take it out the machine and let it dry... 95% of the process is automated (yes, she isn't happy with my argument either). Quote
mightynancy Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 I'm not happy with your argument, either. Quote
MichaelCraig Posted December 21, 2009 Author Report Posted December 21, 2009 Dirty socks in a microwave to clean them??? Did I really see someone post that? Please tell me you don't cook food in it right after you do your socks.... If I'm ever at your house for dinner remind me to only eat food cooked in your regular stove. Quote
rameumptom Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 I don't believe they cook the food after doing the socks. It is more energy efficient to do both at the same time..... Oh, and I think they boil their laundry on the stove.... Quote
