I was just wondering if anyone knew of any horror writers that are LDS? If so, author and title would be great. I love reading books and always look for new authors.

and since I've been out for a while, any good books that I can get to help learn more about the church (history, doctrines, etc...) would be very helpfull.

thanks

I think the main problem is that you will find that horror themes are generally not conducive to the spirit. I mean, how can you promote good wholesome themes when the main characters are killing and maiming each other in especially gruesome and graphic ways?

I know your point, I just grew up reading them and not all of them are all like that. It's just the kind of books I like reading. I also read other stuff too.

JD, there are some that say her writing is a horror story in itself!

mliff, there are many LDS authors that write non-LDS themed books, or that write books whose characters might be LDS but that it is not central to the store.

google " “Clean” does not equal good "

when an author has to resort to blood gore and violence for a horror story, it's my opinion that they fail.

While he's not LDS, I would suggest picking up Writings from MR james, and if you can find the collected Ghost stories of CHarles Dickens, Some of Egdar Allen Poes stuff is good reading as well.

thanks. I have all of chalres dickens and edgar allen poes stuff read em all loved them but i dont have any mr james, ill check into it.

I dont personally see that they fail if they write about blood and gore. to me its just another genra out there. but thats just my opinion though

I disagree that and active LDS person cannot write horror. I did so for many many years as an active member of the church, and there are many types of horror that don't necessitate the use of blood and gore ('slasher' is only one type of horror).

In fact, I am still often invited to teach at the local high schools about the importance of horror fiction, and most of my writing groups have LDS horror authors in them... some published, some not. While I do think an LDS horror author needs to have a little more creativity when it comes to language and presentation, it is done, and often done very well.

While I don't want to give away names for anonymity’s sake, if anyone is interested in a few they can PM me =)

Two books you ought to consider reading. "Mafia to Mormon" and "The Peacegiver".

I have an outline for a horror saga that deals the Biblical notion of unclean sprits seeking bodies and with reviving cryogenic frozen people preserved until a cure of their ailment was discovered. If it ever gets written or published – I will let you know.

I would also say that the Twilight series is as close to horror as you're going to get, in this case, the horror is bad writing. Sorry, but I couldn't get past the bad writing so I quit the first book and refuse to read the rest, or see any of the movies.

Bram Stoker

I understand Sister Shelley's pies were always in great demand at the ward bake sell for the scouts. Brother Stoker's cakes, on the other hand, sucked.

BTW – keep a watch out for a book coming out (about December) titled “The Book of the Dwarfs – the Rise of the Giants”
