It does not seem that fatherhood today is as standard as it was back when Richard Nixon made Fathers Day official in 1972.

Nurturing families come in many forms, and children may be raised by a father and mother, a single father, two fathers, a step father, a grandfather, or caring guardian. We owe a special debt of gratitude for those parents serving in the United States Armed Forces and their families, whose sacrifices protect the lives and liberties of all American children. For the character they build, the doors they open, and the love they provide over our lifetimes, all our fathers deserve our unending appreciation and admiration.

Presidential Proclamation--Father's Day | The White House

Why did he ignore single moms and families with two women rasing kids?

Probably because he hates America and Apple Pie and loves The Kremlin and Stalin.

*nods sagely* That's gotta be it. I can't think of any other reason why a man wouldn't mention single moms and families with two women during a speech on Father's Day.

Wow, Fathers day was not official until 1972? What a rip. Sounds like another invention of industry to make money off the people. I'm shocked we don't have Dogs and Cats day as a holiday.

The first twelve hours of that day would be people complaining that the second twelve hours of that day are completely wrong and vice versa.

The quote was about families in general (caring guardian, fathers and mothers, an duses the term families in many forms). The point is that he has made a major point to include gay male parents rather than just say dads in a generic sense.

Kremlin? Do the Russians have gay rights and gay marriage?

So you're irritated that he went to great lengths to be inclusive of all dads on Father's day...even the non-traditional ones?

Or are you upset that he didn't recognize mothers on Father's day?

Either way, your objection doesn't make much sense.

Since two dudes obviously can't produce a kid biologically, any child they have must come from adoption. I know it's LDS heresy, but I suspect that an adopted child is probably better off with two dads in a stable committed relationship than they would be at an orphanage being raised by the state. My wife and I have been talking about who our daughter should go to if we were both killed- the only people that come to mind are my brother and his partner.... her side of the family is far far more dysfunctional.

Oh, and HoosierGuy- don't ever point out to your mom that Mother's day was created to sell greeting cards after you've neglect to send a card.... it doesn't work and only digs a deeper hole. I know.

Even though Father's Day was suggested back in 1910, it was resisted for a very long time because people thought it would just turn into an unneeded commercialized event. Sort of a Hallmark moment.
